I would like to try this with both right hand and left hand twist drill bits. That way you could see if the left-hand twist bit would cut better on the push-cut than your current bit. I think it should, as it would have the swept-back grind on the right, rather than the left.
Sweet idea though! I love it! I'm going to attempt to make myself one. Hopefully it cuts well! Got a nice HSS 1/2" bit that's nearly new just waiting to be ground up!
Hi what a great idea would it be posible for you to make me one any size as ill make a handle to fif let me know how much one would cost Thanks Neil Vaughan
Down right cool. I love the way people here on youtube Make things and share the idea with others. Thank you for the idea and the time it took to make the video. Great tool. I'll have to make one. Thanks again.
Great tool! How did you get the idea to do that? Was it just doing what you could with what little you have and started by recycling a broken drill bit? Just one question, do you have any problem with it catching on you &/or grabbing and ripping out a chunk?
To come up with this one you must have a little machinist in you. I was a machinist for over 20yrs & I've used broken tools for something else. I blew out my lower back so now I'm retired & getting into turning wood on a Jet 1014 VS Lathe.
Like some of the other commentators, I would like to see a video on step-by-step grinding instructions. I have a Berger hollowing tool but I can't get it to cut like your drill-bit creation. Give it up dude, make the video! Thanks
jfenn6777 Glad you found the video inpiring! I love how it works and use them just about every day. Good luck and if you have any questions let me know.
I was about 5 minutes from giving packard $200 for a hollowing tool when i discovered this video. I'm making one tomorrow and i'll post my results. Thank you Sir, this is fantastic.

Absolutely brilliant. Easy to make. Tried on a piece of dry oak - a good clean cut.

Thank you, your video is quite informative.
I would like to know if what size drill bit you used and if the tool hold was made for the drill bit.

I wanna second the request for info on how to grind the drill bit. It looks like an excellent tool!
