How did the 747 that hit the pentagon not blow over a bunch of things, like telephone poles, and power lines, flying 15 feet above the ground at full speed?
You think 700lbs is gonna make a big difference, you dont even have a clue and you speak with such certainty, you're the pinnacle example of stupid ignorant american.
@bloodmarbles: to make sure the airplane engine could blow off vehicle.. just try to see the demonstrations made by top gear.. it true.. here's the name of the video:
Notice how it's an old truck? So the metal in the truck is not lightweight. Auto manufacturers started using lighter metal recently (mid to late 90's, I think). So a 70's truck with heavy metal and no engine and a 90's or 00's truck with lighter metal and an engine would probably weigh within the same ballpark. But regardless...747's are powerful enough to blow away vehicles. Who cares if there's no engine?
man ... that was ME driving that truck .. on my way to Home Depot .. when all a sudden some parked a JET next to the highway an all hell Broke Loose ...i'm on the phone right now with my $10.00 /week ensurance company ......" you aren't gonna believe what just happened to me :( *

who cares if theres no engine in the damn truck it still weighs close to 7000lbs cause its obviously an older one and it has a utility bed, if youd like they can add the engine and give it an extra 700lbs and you know whats gonna happen when the engine making 35,000lb of thrust throttle up? its gonna blow away just like it did there
@outdoorsman767 Very true I was at RAF base in Gibralter in 1993 when a spanish civilian truck driver jumped the lights on the runway and crossed behind a an RAF Tri-star it only had 18,000lbs of thrust but it blew the articulated 38 ton truck onto it's side and the 150 meters down the runway! I dread to think what would have happened had he jumped the lights 20 seconds earlier! The runway (which has a road crossing it's mid point) now has large gates fitted like a level crossing!
@outdoorsman767 Yah. Orange truck was just a scrapheap being towed by the fire engine (visible at 0:50). No transmission either. Just a frame and four wheels. I'd say engine and transmission removed so that all the oils and lubricants would be gone so they wouldn't have to be wiping engine oil and transmission fluid off the tarmac for the rest of the day...of course, minus that weight, what was left got pitched straight into the water-OOPS!
Yes, the truck's engine & transmission (& I think the intermediate gearbox & PTO) were removed so the oil, etc., woudn't contaminate San Francisco Bay if it was blown in. The SFO Airport Authority, fire department & somebody from the state environmental watchdogs had to approve of the demonstration, of course.
I remember some of the Training Department guys who were there figured the truck'd just flop over. Others said she'd surely go in - she accomodated the more optimistic ones in doing so.
The jet was a Boeing 767-222 (see the tapered tail cone); the '47s tail cone is taller & it also has a split rudder & windows in the cabin doors. One engine was run, a P&W JT9D-3A, thrust - 43,500 lbs. ea.
The actual blow-away was the climax of a United ramp driving safety video made by the Video Dept. (SFOVO). I think it was taped in 1984, sometime after UAL's started getting '67s in '83 (although the clip copyright is '93 - when portions were released for viewing outside UAL).
@celloprof i have a Suburban k1500 1995. It's huge and it only weights half a ton. i want a better presentation of this. I don't see why they would have to take the engine out. It's just not a fair demonstration you know?
@BloodMarbles I have a 95' Suburban also ^_^ 6.5L. Yeah I get what you are saying, but still, I think the Utility Body on the back of that truck is pretty heavy, I doubt it's made out of aluminum.
@BloodMarbles You think that's bad, my suburban isn't running at the moment, so every day I have to take my brother to work in his 34' long Motorhome 10mpg that has a 90gallon fuel tank times $4= $360. Well, 90times whatever the fuel is for Diesel. My suburban should get around 20-25mpg HW when finished, so its not just how much per fill up, but how long between them ;^)
@BloodMarbles Oh you know it depends on the engine "mine is a 6.5L diesel", the set up. I had all electronic shit; electronic fuel pump, gas pedal & transmission. It's like the domino effect, when one thing malfunctions,"the fuel pump" in my case & I want to replace it with a DB2 mechanical pump, I have to replace the gas pedal & transmission with a mechanical one also. I ALSO have a 1993Chevy HIGHTOP conversion van with a 5.7L V8, it has never gotten above 15mpg, usually gets around 14.5mpg both city & highway. My van has 3.93 rear gears a 3" exhaust&K&N air fliter and it runs great. Before it had a 3.42, 2" exhaust and paper filter, ran like crap 5-8mpg when I got it in 06'
@celloprof OH and my van gets 9-10mpg really flooring it hard in traffic/city driving, my dads old 6.2L diesel g20 van that ran great to say the least, got no less than 20mpg no matter what, X^D
We could take the guts out of a blue whale...and the blubbery-ness would blow away like a parachute too...
An engine is the bulk of the weight considering...a truck especially, is built light to make-up for the large increase in drag during high-speed performance. (45-75 mph).
@Hyperserver did you know that that truck weighs in at about 4 tons with the engine and tranny with out it it weighs about 3 tons yeah its not easy to blow that off the road
@Hyperserver Um so, 250,000 lbs of thurst vs a 4,000 lb vehicle hmmmmmmmm, let me think about that....I'm pretty sure an engine wont mean dick anyway.
