@peternoer The basic idea came from Italy and - ultimately - the character of Punch can be traced back to sources such as Loki in Norse mythology. There is also some hint of Punch-like behaviour in Homer Simpson, don't you think? In particular, the near-iconic image of him strangling Bart.

Ah, and to answer Phoenixkidd's query, several punch Profs. do not use a falsetto voice for Judy. Indeed, much in the tradition of 'Pantomime Dames'. The Punch show has some strong similarities with English Pantomime routines when you think about it!
