  • Damn you're choking up on the right hand stick wayyyyyy too much

  • Good drummer

  • Bad drum but a sick nasty drummer

  • He should definitely tryout for a drum corps once he becomes a junior or senior in high school. He definitely has the skills.

  • Keep ur pinkky on when u diddle and ur good bro

  • So, where is Jay going to go to college? Texas, USC, and Illinois probably have the best lines. I'm sure he'll do great wherever he goes, though.

  • poor drum

  • A good drummer never looks at his drum. Other than that, the performance was nice.

  • If you're 15 now, then you're probably a freshman or sophomore by now. What high school do you go to, because i would really enjoy seeing you perform in person. I'm a freshman too, but I'm pretty good so i was made section leader for my percussion and drum line section. I actually love practicing so if you have any tips on what you do to become as amazing as you are they would really help thanks :)

  • If anybody didn't know back sticking makes you good. =B

  • Great solo!!!

  • The suit definitely added to the solo haha.

  • damn thts amazing

  • were did u get the snare

  • Speed Haker : 2:10

  • i like that amazing tricks

  • so that drums got holes in it. why not just put a head on an empty free floater with no shell.

  • @DCIdrumdude Drum shells are sound chambers. Ventilation/them square hole thingies make the drum louder because it gives the sound energy a place to escape, as opposed to just being trapped between two drum heads with tiny or no ventilation that's typically found on a snare drum. Free floating head would not be loud and there would be no bottom head/snare response because the energy would just fly out err-where.

  • Dang cuzo... Been watching since you where 8 now you are a young man and you are still amazing. I mean there some ticks but you have to be a professional to know where, lol... Keep up the good work Jay. Stay in contact if you need some advice and pointers dwardvhspercussion@yahoo.com. Also, I'm tranning my son now well I've been trainning him since he was 4. He's 8now. But what drum crop you going for if you decided to go?

  • my names jay

  • The camera lost focus when he smiled at 2:30. xD

  • he opens his fingers on his diddles

  • Does he use the traditional size of marching sticks? When I was that young I doubt my hands/fingers would have been big enough to play with those types of sticks. He has got really great chops- way better than mine. also is it just me, or is the tuning sound a lot more erm buzzier(if that's a word), I am sure you adjusted it for indoor use right?

  • Our lead snare drummer does a lot of back sticking like the guy does in this video. Although he does it at a much faster pace so it's slightly more impressive.

    But pretty good solo anyways.

  • All things considered, my only complaint is that you should probably choke back on your right stick.

  • are you sure this wasn't Nick Cannon when he was young

  • @jcarlson2007 LOL nick cannon sucks at snare

  • Backstick much?

  • @kimsdrummer ya Ik but what are some good things to practice to build them up

  • nice touch at taking jacket off..

  • Dang!!! How did u build up ur chops??

  • @CrazyTenors practice....practice......then practice some more

  • If APA actually makes a legitimate drumline, jay should be in the snare line.

BTW i was at the APA drum camp this past summer and word went around the students there and i ended up on this channel. Awesome

  • is that a pearl marching snare?

  • i belive he was .0008 of a 164 note of on the 4th measure beat 3

  • how did u guys get this solo? i saw danny raymond play this exact same thing in a vic firth clinic...i see u took out the push-pull technique in the one handed sixteenth note section...

  • @tenorchops04 Mr. Raymond sent Jay an autographed copy. Jay was so excited!

  • @oldchops That's awesome...i see Jay didn't put it to waste...i can only imagine how proud you must be...

  • *Cough* Drum Corps *cough*

  • I'm just now learning this, and I'm gonna be 19......

  • Olha pra cima pra toca otario

  • wow...thats all i have to say :D

  • he should play with the blue devils

  • if this kid doesnt get on the drum line...

  • Hey Jay... I freakin' hate chu!!!

  • I hear critique on this performance and I could probably offer one or two but I wasn't doing that well at 13. I agree with the advice don't get cocky.... be proud of your ability but always strive to improve.. Be open to tips from others and take them into consideration. One person may have a tip that can help you to achieve a new level . I can tell by watching this kid he is being trained well and has a good technique Keep it up.

  • how old is he now

  • whos his teacher?

  • you should tighten up that snare. unless thats the holes. nice hands bro

  • thats whats up but i got a good ? what drum is that its nice.

  • Dont like it -.-

  • amazing..rudiments :D nice 2 stroke roll :P

  • I can't wait to see this kid marching dci

  • hes cool better then me :D

  • Oh. My. God. AWESOME!!!!!!

  • the second part is from a drum battery battle

  • Definitely a talent beyond just speed. Amazing rhythms and articulation. I would pay to see this live! I can't believe this hasn't gone Viral. Does he have his own you tube channel, I'd love to subscribe.

  • Definitely a talent beyond just speed. Amazing rhythms and articulation. I would pay to see this live!

  • You need to go march a great drum corp!! Like BD or santa clara. I marched bluecoats for two years and came back playing better than i ever thought i could.

  • Skyscraper, eh?

  • Keep it up man

  • Again with the white flashes of light! Amazing!

BTW did he come first in the talent show?

    pfffft silly question!

  • @Dunham617 It was not judged, just entertainment for a general audience. Thanks for watching!

  • Needs to watch stick heights in the left hand... practice in front of a mirror.

  • @MySkeptic Will do and thanks for the advice!

  • @oldchops No prob! :)

  • crazy chops, but i still think it was pretty dirty as in sloppy and buzz roll needs work but amazing indeed for 13

  • @jonah12321 This is Jay. Yes, there is a lot of dirt in it. That was the best that I was able to do given circumstances, plus that is really tough solo. I had fun with it and the crowd enjoyed it. Thanks, man!

  • @oldchops dude you are awesome, dont even look at these hateful comments. i think you are fantastic and i know you mustve been practacing really hard to get where you are today!

  • @oldchops yo bro this sick!!! im 17 and have been playing snare for 12 years and i learned how to do this solo when i was 15....this is hella sick though keep up the good work bro :)

  • demasiado bueno mil respetos!!!!

  • Is that Mr. Lehmann??? The teachers call Mr. Lehmann Jay.

  • how does he do that at 13? he must have started drums at like 5!

  • jesus! he's choppin out like a beast!! O.o i want his skills!!

  • i wanna see him play FALCON PUNCH!! by david oriente lol

  • I bet his high school marching band is happy to have him

  • u should come to holland for good snare drums

  • Machine gun fire coming in!

  • lol he should start his own 'lick of the week' type video

  • Really well done...my cousin was center snare for cavaliers and he was like this at your age.. keep up the great work dude!

PS Nice Backstacking and hi-moms ;)

  • Jay doesn't need to worry about aging out at all my God.

  • I marched center snare for the colts in 08 and then for the cavaliers in 09 and to any of you nitwits saying Jay cant play on any competitive dci corps, then you are naive and need to practice.

  • Everything awesome cept try to work on stick height

  • Center Snare for the Blue Devils? Lol

  • @TheIceTitan you maybe laughing but I see it happening like for real

  • @TheIceTitan Being that Jay was 13 years old during this performance, I am quite sure that he has the potential to be "center snare" for the Blue Devils at some point within the next 9 or so years (from the date of this performance), if that was his goal. LOL! It is possible for some 13 year old kid out there that has not even started to play yet to be "center snare" for the Blue Devils within the next 9 years! LOL!

  • @oldchops True, true. Lol but I can definitely see him in some drum corps somewhere as center snare! :D

  • @oldchops I just lost respect of you for that comment.

  • MATCH TRADITIONAL?!?!?! OH SNAP!

  • ive honestly never seen better talent. that is amazing. jay. when u make it to DCI (which of course u will) ima get tickets to c u lol

  • Do you realize how famous he is on here already? Do you realize how many people want his chops??

  • is it cool if you buy one of these how much?? im thinking of using it as my snare for my drums

  • @Monst3r199 The HV customization is excellent. Just contact user name: hvdrums, here on youtube to inquire about the drum and prices.

  • @Monst3r199 You can pick up a "stock" version of a marching snare on ebay at a reasonable price. The last one I bought was a Pearl EFX in "like new" condition. I got the drum, harness, and hard shell padded case for $250. The drum in this video has been customized and looks great! Personally, I haven't found modern marching snare drums to sound good with my drum kits. Great for drum corps, and for dexterity excersizes, but too much crack to translate well into a drumset, in my opinion.

  • Yeah I've played snare 5 and a half years and you're really good better than me and most people on YouTube are not as goo as me you have some major talent and should look in to making you're life as a musicion

  • Jay you have some major talent in percussion, and ur only 13!? Geez I can only imagine the level u will be in 5-10 years! I've been playing an acustic set for almost 3 years and not afraid to admit that you are better than me at the level u are now keep it up the good work and dedication, and I'll be purchacing tickets to the concert of the band you make famous! Rock it!

  • Jay, you're a great drummer! It's very difficult to make a snare solo entertaining and not just chops. It takes a sense of humor and needs to just be fun at times. Its VERY easy to be anonymous and criticize too. You seem to deal with the pressure well. JUST HAVE FUN.. Congrats!

I marched snare in the Velvet Knights in 94 and split the center in 95 under Tom Float and Paul Rennick. My HS program was not so good and it took me three years of auditioning at VK before I made the line. I competed

  • man ive been watching this kid for so long on youtube hes going somewhere with this. THE KID IS GOOD

  • you did real good and you are alrite

  • damn at 2:13 it looks like if someone pressed a fat forward button just look atthe speed this kid has

  • can u play kiit bro, cuz ud b beast if u could, with the speed u have.

  • He's getting center snare on his first first year of highschool, wish I can see his instructors face at that time

  • 4 words JIZZ IN MY PANTS!!

  • AND FURTHERMORE! Your back sticking is large and cumbersome....

    Double traditional my ass.

  • @ASB259 I think someone's upset because the 13 year-old in this video has WAY more chops than he/she does. Just sayin'.

On another note, great playing as always! Jay's going places.

  • So, I'm kind of curious as to who "oldchops" is in relation to this Jay. Jay is absolutely amazing and, 13 or 30, has an incredible gift. However, in these posts, I don't get to hear Jay's voice, only this third party known as oldchops, whose comments about Jay's incredible talent seem patronizing and bordering on abusive. Let this kid breathe and enjoy the amazing gift he has rather than posting his videos on Youtube and publicly criticizing him. This kind of pressure will only lead to cracks

  • I liked when he went into the single handed 16th note stroke.that was LIVE.!!I love to do that on snare

  • you should enter him into I&Eor something like it

he has a pretty good chance!

  • i jus started drummin like last week and i look up to him even though he younger

  • when he went traditional in both hands was hot!

  • WOW! That was AWSOME!!

  • What the hell is he doing at 2:55?

  • @kewlguy323 HOLY CRAP!!! Left handed traditional? That's for losers that are too lazy to learn traditional correctly!

  • hes good, but it souns like 1continous buzz roll, no offence

  • Haha he's here to take over kelen's spot :D

  • Hi!-- no strength in seperate, individual seperations, of seperate Rudimentary skills.... Winner's, in the past-- started a roll with a flamn- Ishowed. Flam triplets was not shown; nor was that shown artistic capabilility.. Neither was shown any "Creative flair" !! If capable-- anyone who has chops, could have done that!-- NO excellence required.- My students can be, and will be better than that!!-- Go figure!!!-- Johnny!

  • @meatwad314 that's what I was saying. He's still really good

  • Are those holes in the drums??

  • Comment removed

  • @EvanBidney94 @EvanBidney94 Yes, they are rectangular cuts to let the drum project and have increased snare response.

  • wow thats a loose snare

  • it seems like his right hand is choking up alot

  • why dont you let him do open class corps? the first corps i was in had many middle schoolers and lower level high school students. its great experience

  • I can imagine if he dropped one of the sticks twirling it around in the air.

  • He could with out a doubt march corps with his skill. Has e thought abot it?

  • dang your son is really good! does he know how to march? if he can march as good as he plays he cud go center snare im trying to make it to center snare next year im a freshman right now.

  • dont let him get cocky oldchops i like his older vids better

  • @gagafan219 Okay, we'll keep him grounded! For this performance he just wanted to wear a suit and hat and do a...let's say "cool" performance to entertain the audience. He actually wanted to sing a song instead of drum, but his singing is still...let's say "suspect." LOL!

  • @oldchops good answer, my friend!- J- DAMN Good, but not as good as Kalkoffen- back in the 70-s!! My instructor .later was known as the man who left my drumline-"Troopers, D and C- when we needed him most-- just before Pre-lims, at Pennsyvania- 1976!!! He bailed on our drumline- and left us alone to finish the season on our own- by ourselves!!! We still finished12th! Just to let you know- Kalkoffen has no honour

  • I know you put this in fast forward.

  • He's great for his age, but he's gone lose progression speed. he'll be good, but his drumline bros can catch up fast. what a shame

  • @Sebastianstripper I understand most of what you are saying. Yes, he is progressing a little slower as time goes by- that applies to everyone eventually. Yes, some of his "drumline bros can catch up fast." Some already have, some will soon, and some won't, but most are still a little older than Jay. I have to disagree with your comment, "...what a shame." It is a good thing to see players progress, and even catch up to or surpass Jay's level of play.

  • Dude crab grip! YESSSS! He needs to brush his shoulder though after playing crab, it's the rule :O!

  • when this kids a senior hes gonna be INCREDIBLE.

  • how many snares are in the snare line at jays high school?

  • @watchcoww Jay was one of three snare drummers on his line this past marching season.

  • @oldchops Was he drumline captain? He would make a great captain...

  • i think he is choking up to much on his right hand

  • at 1:14 it was a prettyy sloppy buzz roll

  • he has chops and playing ability?!?!?!?

  • wow i wish i had talent like this i really wish he could teach me. I play bass 1 in my school drumline.

  • :/ He looks about my age, but 2459230847598237658972369x better than me...

  • this may b in 2010 but ur camera makes look like 1945

  • did you teach him all this?

  • is he choking too much on his right stick?

  • daamn hhe's good haha i can barely do double traditional and he's just doing it like its nothing

  • So.... what did you get for winning

  • @jumpajulia It wasn't competitive. They all just performed for the entertainment of the audience.

  • What line does Jay plan on trying out for in the future? Or who does he like the best?

  • Dang, if only the video was clearer I could follow most of it, good job, thumbs up all aroud

  • Wow that kid has skills. Gud job Jay!

  • dont look down.

  • this isn't fair...come on save some skill for the rest of us!

  • No offence but as i commented in the other video you really should stop flaring to much (again flare meaning showing off). It is making u play dirty, sure your not bad but it is pretty dirty in the parts where u start backsticking as most people will probubly notice.

  • @contractual1 The kid is 13 in middle school, give him a damn break geez.

  • @contractual1 don't bash his playing and we won't bash your spelling.

  • tell me you are going to do DCI

  • Did they fast forward it

  • damb hes fast ass hell

  • THAT KID GOT SOME SKILLZ

  • ...either that or it's as though the parent is saying, "oh you think AT's good? He's not even warmed up!" or "wait til you see what he can REALLY do!" All I'm saying is that I'm a performer and perfotmers know that you'll never play at 100% every single time. Just continue working with him and let the kid's talent speak for itself. It speaks volumes alone already.

  • I guess I'm tripping because the kid is frigging awesome....but every other sentence in the description is; "he still has to work on this" or "he's not warmed up anymore" or "he still. has SO much to work on." I know that you should never get complacent, but it almost sounds like an overbearing parent who is saying, "I apologize. He's gifted, but he's capable of SO much more. We promise we'll do better with him." I dunno....*shrug*

  • just a couple things, BEADS. they're like super far apart most of the time so keep them closer together it makes it look way more professional and it helps the sound too. also keep the taps lower. and that's pretty much it hahaha great job!

  • not gona lie the kid's good lol

  • Man oh man its a cool thing at 16 almost 17 to see a kid with that much talent on snare and any other instruments he plays... i still remember stumbling over his first tornado jay video. Keep up the good work kid.

  • Comment removed

  • Again, more hacking....

  • it look like they fast foward it

  • amazing. i really want to march snare next year so ive been practicing a lot and this is inspirational

  • He's so grown up!!! :3

  • system blues?

  • he drums too fast i can't see it

  • Did he win? :p?
