I, too, have many years experience in mosaic. You totally CAN use a hammer to break ceramics. If you are looking for precision, you won't get it with a hammer. That's what tile nippers are for. But a hammer works well for the initial breaking of materials. As the video notes, the way different materials break will vary. Mexican tiles will crumble, regarless of whether you use a hammer or nippers. I have never had a problem with tiles developing fissures from using a hammer.
I really enjoyed watching all these videos! I cut my tiles with nippers for more contol. I sell handcut broken china tiles on etsy. under the name Kimscustomcaps.
This is not the proper way to break your ceramic pieces. There are special tools that you can order online or purchase at a craft store. Some have straight edges and others have two small wheels at the ends that you put the ceramic in between and press down until it is cut.
As a mosaic artist for over 10 years you absolutely should NEVER EVER break your tile with a hammer! That is of course if you don't care about your finished product.
Hammering your tiles, plates or what ever creates small little cracks or fisher lines that you will not see until you grout. When you grout it will discolor those lines making it appear dingy or like you smashed your tile with a hammer. Take the time to buy some nippers and do it properly. You will get a clean cut every time.
You are so right, there are some things that annoy me like the lack protection when handling grout and so forth.
But in saying that, I have added these to my playlist. We an always inform people as you have. Been working with mosaics for 3 years now and learning something new all the time.
