If you've ever caught a train from Ueno at 8.30am, you'll know all about suffering... especially in the middle of summer. But I'd rather that than the Sydney trains. Sydney trains are awful. The platforms are filthy, even if they're 10 minutes late they say they're on time. Re: the kimono, I think there must have been a special event, maybe a festival, because you don't usually see that many. You still see them but it's usually older people and even then only 3 or 4 a day.
I spent over a year in Melbourne. I would prefer the Melbourne public transportation over Sydney any day. You guys have a better system do we do in Sydney. especially the one fare system where you can catch bus, tram, and train on one ticket!! Here we will need all tickets and t cost alot!.
That's because Japanese teenagers don't piss in trains, & they don't do graff. Don't blame the railway operators, blame the people who do the damage.
Also, as you can tell, Japan has a lot more people, & their railways are utilized far more than Australian railways, more passengers over less distance = more income.
