Kirk--excellent actor. Filled with energy--almost like a keg of dynamite. You don't know which way he'll go! That's what makes a great actor--unpredictability.
Gorgeous! I love the way he'd pause and just tell you what he was thinking without speaking. I loved the beard (even though it covered his cleft.) Fun actor to watch.
i read a 50pages book at school, in Portugal, in my 5th year i guess... It is a beutiful story, rithg now i am trying to find the book, or video. I still remember the ciclope, the marmaid in the ocean, the horse of Troy... and when he got home like a homeless.... ands his dog.
I am glad, that You like this epic story - may it inspire You.
Online You may find several statements about the use of Homer's Odyssey in education. Reading such articles might help You to gain more from the story - and from literature in general.
I like the play of Kirk Douglas, too. I remember his name vividly in connection with the story of Spartacus.
I don't know enough different movies to say, that this one could be called the best adaption of the homeric epos. But I like several parts of this movie. I find it an interesting idea, that Circe is played by the same actress as Penelope - giving Ulysses the illusion of home, while being exiled from his real origin - and its real challenges.
Since two weeks I am trying to remember, where I have read about Circe - but I could not find it yet. I want to apologize, that my reply comes that late.
I like this scene most, because it shows a surprising depth. While the characters of Calypso and Circe - as described by Homer - are fused together in this movie - I still tend to see Circe as the temptation of oriental culture - keeping man in an ancient, ecstatic state of natural cycles and ritualized dependency.
Later philosophers often used the Apollo / Dionysus dichotomy to highlight the difference between reason (Apollo) and nature (Dionysus). Nietzsche (not one of my favorites) was prominent among them. The band Rush even did a song about it. I think it's called Cygnus or something like that.
While I feel close to the Mysteries of Dionysus as celebrated by Friedrich Nietzsche at this point of my life, I still wonder, why he never noted the change of rule at Delphi for every half of the year, between Apollo and Dionysus.
Clearly he must have known this practice from Jacob Burckhardt. The idea of a dialectic process was still spread in german philosophy at the end of the 19th century.
But indeed these ideas never became so popular as the concepts of natural science.

does anyone know where this movie was shot?

@xaralamb1
it seems to have been an Italian production. So I assume it was filmed in Italy, but I could not find any further detail yet.

"Only the fearful can know the value of courage."
If only there was wisdom like that in today's movies...

A really well made movie, though there's
too much Hollywood stuff that ruins all.
If you wanna really see a perfect Odyssey
adaption and the best movie ever made of the Homer's poem, watch the Odissea
made by RAI in 1969 ( Franco Rossi as director , starring Bekim Fehmiu, marvelous Irene Papas, Barbara Bach...) .
That's the top, an unbeatable evergreen .

Kirk Daglas is very good actress. 'ODYSSEY' is the best film with Odyssey's legend.

My son just finished a young version of the Odyssey. He didn't think much of Circe. This is an interesting, humanist twist on Ulysses.
