I heard both Gedda, Corelli and Del Monaco in house years ago and no Del Monaco had a bigger voice then Corelli and more dramatic, heard him in 1959 as Otello. Gedda I heard twice and he had plenty of volume in any lyric role. I also heard Bergonzi aoften in house and Bjorling once. They both sounded bigger on records then live. Pavoratti early had a voice that was not powerful, later as a lyric it did get larger. True he stuck to Italian.
Spinto tenor corelli also sang this opera on stage and lyric tenor neil shicoff so it has been sung by both and Gedda is a Lyric tenor also. I never heard Pav sing it or much french at all. Like Jussi he never touched Carmen on stage either. Pav. never sang Hoffmann that Gedda sang and recorded so well and Shicoff was terrific as Hoffmann in our time. Tucker sang it in the 50's and Domingo sang it also later, both Spinto's.
@raigekimaru Nawp, as there is no "down to" dramatic tenor =D
But if you mean the power of a larger tenor, with the upper range of a leggiero, I think Gedda qualifies. This is certainly not dramatic tenor power, though...Gedda had a touch of spinto, nothing more. A strange comment, I must say, since the proper term for a spinto tenor is a "tenore lyrico come un piu spinto"...with a little push/force. But anyway. He has a little of it, but he's no Corelli. And Corelli's no Del Monaco, etc.
actually, a dramatic tenor role will fall lower in tessitura than lyric tenor. sometimes it will even go a little bit into the baritone register. but yes, you're right, Gedda is no Corelli. however, I think Corelli's voice was more powerful than Del Monaco. higher yes, but more powerful
Gedda's videos are full of Bodiloto's comments. He hates Gedda so he must be suffering a lot doing this. I think he believes that he must do these sacrifices in order to enlighen people.
@Herur22 Thanks for your reply. I didn't know it. Of course, it's just a matter of taste, and different opnions about art, artists, voices, interpretations often clash. But personally I can't understand how can somebody hate GEDDA?! He is so great with his mavelous, magical, very noble voice with a unique, very pleasant timbre, and intelligent interpretations! There are only few such noble voices of all time! Why try to enlighten people that it's bad?!:-)
Bodiloto keeps saying that Gedda's voice was really very small and very ugly and that he has to thank for his career exclusively to the sound technicians. Imagine that!
I read in several comments here on You Tube that no recording could express the beauty of his voice as heard in the house.
@Herur22 I believe those lucky ones who heard Gedda live as it's always better to listen to artists on stage and not in the recording. As for sound technicians, if even now with all their manipulations with the voice, sound they can't turn a poor voice into a great one, if it's empty it remains empty, if the artist shares no soul an understanding listener will feel it, at the time when Gedda sang it was impossible to make an ugly and small voice to sound beautiful and full! So, it's nonsense...
Hahahaha, no I don' know you and to say the truth I have no great wish to know you. As to speaking about you - I only repeated your written words, so no great insight into your character was needed.
E' semplice.
@bodiloto Non dico nulla personalmente.
Bjoerling e' numero uno officialmente soltanto secondo BBC Magazine.
Tutto e' finto, e puo' sentirlo... Come mai?
One of the most beautiful arias ever written! Marvellous interpretation! Difficult to imagine it more beautifully sung than this! Great Gedda! Bravissimo!
@poolification Thank you for your advice. I'll check it too and compare. You mean the quality of the recording is better? I think that this interpretation is just magnificent! Thank you anyway.
Beczala is very good, his voice is beautiful. But, in my opinion, he has to work on his interpretation of the arias. Gedda had more stylistic artistery.
I prefer the tenors mentioned to Gedda, and I think they surpass him in Italian opera. However, for this aria and this opera, none of the tenors you mentioned could dream of singing it as well as Gedda does here.
In this particular aria he is, if nothing else, better than Corelli, Gigli, or even Pavarotti. It's probably what most experienced opera lovers would say.
Even Pavarotti?! You really put him higher than Corelli and Gigli?! How about other great artists? What's so special in him? He was just very well promoted!
I meant what's so special in Pavarotti for YOU? As for me, I already have an immunity to his voice. For me it was just a promoted image of a huge man with "a larger than life personality" with a lot of friends and good marketing skills. I've heard his singing more often than any other operatic singer in the world. I can listen to his voice but I don't "hear" it at all. True music really goes beyong words. If Pavarotti isn't just a symbol for you, you can explain. I'm just curious what YOU hear?
Thank you for your reply. I only didn't understand where I made "a linguistic mistake"?! I wrote only "even Pavarotti?" Because you put him higher than Corelli ad Gigli, and I think that they are greater artists than him. Anyway, what do you advise me to replay? What pieces from his masteclasses do you recommend me to listen "to see a touch of his great personality"? I'm just curious.
I like Pavarotti a good deal, and in a few things (fille du regiment, some tosti songs, etc) I could almost say I love him.... he was also among the best Rodolfo's and Duca's ever.
That said, I find when listening to him in general, that I "reach bottom" with him rather quickly. (for lack of a better term.) He doesn't hold my interest. Not sure why that is exactly.
One of the classic pperformances from a sadly bygone (but not fotgotten) l'Age d'Or. Only the young di Stefano recorded it more gloriously in 1944 during his Swiss 'A.W.O.L. from the Italian Amry..
The video to me is always incidental to the song and music, playback or not what does it matter nothing can deter from this superb rendition of this beautiful aria!
Thank6ou for posting and thankyou Wenarto for sharing
Bravo! I can't stand Gedda's singing in the Italian repertoire, it's awful. But this is outstanding, I've never heard someone master the French repertoire as well as Gedda.
You know...I think the person I replied to removed their comment, because for the life of me I can't find anything in the comments that makes sense for me to have said that :) I don't remember.

Classic-Mind your words you little fiddlestick. Who the heck are you? If you have something of substance to voice, go ahead. Otherwise, stop barking around!
Gedda's musicality is supreme. it is like carlo bergonzi and jussi bjoerling.. so pls.. stop telling anything negative to this great maestro.. just have fun watching.. besides, you criticized much eh you dont even sing close to gedda.. =) ciao!=)
Listen, Classic 1306, seriously now. Read the comments and find out where did I say anything bad about Gedda (whom I admire) or where did I quarrel with anybody. Read, before you spit on people.
Susejf-You do not make sense. Gedda has nothing to prove. He was a Maestro in its truest sense. This is an operatic motion picture. All operatic motion pictures as dubbed in the studio. Get a clue.

Sandrik-Wow! Did you think of that all by yourself. You're surely out of words. Just because you're living a shitty life, do not project it onto others. A crappy life is your destiny. Go blame your ancestors.

Sandrik-Now cut the crap, be a good boy and follow the footsteps of your ancestors: Crawl back to the crap hole in your native Georgia and be ready to beg for goodwill from major nations so that you will not starve or freeze to death next winter.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Again you're resorting to religious nonsense rhetoric. Where was your God while Georgians were being overrun major dominant nations since the 13th century? Now go pray you delusional fiddlestick.
I am not going to discuss the history of my country and religious things in which you are so poor, wretched and MISERABLE. Our delusion helped us to outlive such a impudent nations as yours. But you are so shortcoming, that you can not imagine! You are IMPUDENT, ATHEISTIC and AROGANT!!!
Georgians should worry about how they're going to keep warm next winter and feed themselves in the event the benevolence of some major nations stops to continue. Now stop self victimizing yourself, crawl back to the crap hole from which you originated and keep your mouth shot.
Stop blurting out nonsense. Just remember the trash can of a country in which you continue your miserable existence, thanks to the benevolence of some major nations.
As one Georgian proverb says: What is in bottle it will be poured out. So there is only crap in your mouth so, we can not recieve anything good from you! Enother Georgian proverb says: You must not be angry at donkey's kick. So I only feel sorry for your disgreaced exclamations!
Shame and disgrace is your history and ancestry. A nation which has been at the bottom of the barrel, a nation which surrendered and submitted to everybody and anybody, a nation who still continues to exist by living off of the left-overs of other nations. The word parasite comes to mind.
Hey stupid jester you don't understand, that as much you move (speak) so much you are packing yoursef in the trash bin, so shut up at last! I don't whant to debate with you about history, because you are feeble and weak to understand it, so I will play with you absolutly different game -the game which you deserve poor wretched jester!
Your receive pleasure from someone who reminds you that you are a POOR, MISERABLE, UNSUCCESFULL Georgian who has NOTHING? Wow. You really are a living proof of Darwin.
No my dear jester, I get peasure from that, that your wretched words are so funny, because you have not grown up for truth and reallity. I had much better conception about Americans, but I am totally dissapointed, But I believe that you are exclusion. Such a wretched idiots are SHAME AND DISGREACE for their homelands!
Prayer? Farm? You really do not make sense. I live in a jungle. It is called NYC. Surely beats your neck of the woods by a century in every aspect. Now, go take your medication. Otherwise, you will go completely insane in the rat hole where you have been living a rotten life --Georgia that is.
Hey Inqusitive jerk! Did you read your silly prayer?! Go back to your farm and wash the asses of you cows, then throw out a trash. Oh! don't forget to take some nastoyka of valerian:-)
Don't expect me to lay low when this bottom-of-the barrel Georgian fiddlestick openly insulted americans and the US following my factual comment on Carreras.
When you've got nothing else to say, you're resorting to baseless trash talk, eh? But that's expected. Once a loser, always a loser. It's in your genes. Stop fighting it.
You must be mental. The only thing you're beating is your monkey, and that surely must have gotten to your head. Now be a good boy and go take your medication. You've lost it. If you knew something significant to teach, you'd have taught yourself how to get out of destitute. Now go back to begging for foreign aid.
Temporary as in "since the 13th century"? Georgians never were wealthy. You spent most of your existence on this planet under someone else's sovereignty and lived with the crumblings which were thrown in front of you. Wake up!
You stupid idiot! Stop this foolish talk! Such a silly man as you are is not able to unerstand anything exept good kick. How happy are you, that I can not teach you brain tet a tet or I would beat you unmercifully!
No go back to your insignificant world, stay in your corner, and wait until a major nation throws you a bone. Your barking is less than amusing or entertaining.
You as a nation have developed such a large hemorroid because of your submission and surrender to every major nation that even the best proctologist in the world would say "WTF?" were you thinking?

bodiloto 1 year ago
Tutto e' finto, e puo' sentirlo... Come mai?
serenaluce 1 year ago
bodiloto 1 year ago 9
@bodiloto La capisco.

@serenaluce Actually, I think the recital version he did in Salzburg 1961 is even more beautiful. In my opinion, that's the ultimate Pourqoui...
You should check it out here on youtube if you haven't already.

Try the " new " Gedda -- Beczala is the name.

Beczala is very good, his voice is beautiful. But, in my opinion, he has to work on his interpretation of the arias. Gedda had more stylistic artistery.

He is really good, but is not better than Corelli, Gigli, or even Pavarotti, for mentioning some...
Marcovcr 2 years ago
I prefer the tenors mentioned to Gedda, and I think they surpass him in Italian opera. However, for this aria and this opera, none of the tenors you mentioned could dream of singing it as well as Gedda does here.
Mooorhe 2 years ago 2
I believe that Alfredo Krauss also sing this aria very well, or even exc i think, off course i admit that Gedda its very very good tenor....
Marcovcr 2 years ago 2
In this particular aria he is, if nothing else, better than Corelli, Gigli, or even Pavarotti. It's probably what most experienced opera lovers would say.
But of course, every opinion is an opinion.
ForAll23 2 years ago 6
Even Pavarotti?! You really put him higher than Corelli and Gigli?! How about other great artists? What's so special in him? He was just very well promoted!
serenaluce 2 years ago
@serenaluce
>What's so special in him?
Music goes beyond words.
If you can not hear it, how shall I explain it..?
ForAll23 2 years ago
I meant what's so special in Pavarotti for YOU? As for me, I already have an immunity to his voice. For me it was just a promoted image of a huge man with "a larger than life personality" with a lot of friends and good marketing skills. I've heard his singing more often than any other operatic singer in the world. I can listen to his voice but I don't "hear" it at all. True music really goes beyong words. If Pavarotti isn't just a symbol for you, you can explain. I'm just curious what YOU hear?
serenaluce 2 years ago 3
Hello!
Aha, this is a linguistic mistake; "or even," should be "or".
Anyway; in my youth I was never fond of Pavarotti, I thought his voice (the timbre) was cold and laser-like, his musical performing was soulless etc.
Over the years I changed my mind. Today I think he was a great singer and a great personality, although he is not among my favorites.
If you look up his masterclasses here on YT you can see a touch of his great personality.
Please replay
ForAll23 2 years ago
Thank you for your reply. I only didn't understand where I made "a linguistic mistake"?! I wrote only "even Pavarotti?" Because you put him higher than Corelli ad Gigli, and I think that they are greater artists than him. Anyway, what do you advise me to replay? What pieces from his masteclasses do you recommend me to listen "to see a touch of his great personality"? I'm just curious.
serenaluce 2 years ago
@serenaluce
I feel exactly the same. I was never attracted to Pavarotti.
Herur22 2 years ago 3
I like Pavarotti a good deal, and in a few things (fille du regiment, some tosti songs, etc) I could almost say I love him.... he was also among the best Rodolfo's and Duca's ever.
That said, I find when listening to him in general, that I "reach bottom" with him rather quickly. (for lack of a better term.) He doesn't hold my interest. Not sure why that is exactly.

Impresionante.
