Decent advice....
But its a long process on your own. I've had many battles and read many pages on forums about credit repair and doing it myself. It can be done, but it does require a whole lot of follow up to make sure they keep their word and not hose you once you settle(collectors).
I was struggling with this, but my friend recommended a company that did all the leg work for him, and all they charged me was $40/year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION if your credit sucked like mine did. I used Credit Repair Magic to repair my credit and saw results within just a few days. The main thing that I was able to do with this program was to dispute negative entries on my credit report, which drove my score up as these were deleted. Since most companies cant verify the information on the credit reports, I was able to make my credit score rise dramatically with just a few clicks of the mouse.
