Noone is forced into this and it is NOT a cult. If it was there wouldnt be millions of people who are happy in this organization. For those who dont know we are in this for Jehovah not any man. We are imperfect human beings and we make mistakes. There are different personalities and ways of being. So if you have any questions or opinions dont go to websites that arent managed by Jehova Witness's. Its ridiculous!! Noone EVER questions or backlashes the authority of the Army or how strict it is to get in and stay in yet everyone have something to say about how a religion that is strictly Bible based is too strict and what not. There are rules and restrictions EVERWHERE!!!
I was a Witness and the elders are rude and and they do give you ultimatums..you have to believe their doctrine without question, if you have doubts about their beliefs you'd better keep them to yourself or you will be disfellowshipped...some witnesses have recieved a thourough brain washing..

It took me many years to be able to even go to God in prayer or shed my guilt and be open to other interests and beliefs, both spiritual and secular because I was made to feel as though God hated me and I would forever be in a bad way(! The religion is very physiologically damaging and exhausting and you are made to feel alone, abandoned and worthless without. Only the strong can escape unscathed.....:-((
I was raised as a Witness and this movie really hit home....it brought me to tears! It's so painful and disheartening when you think about being abused, manipulated, brainwashed, and later rejected by the very ones who claim to "love" you and have your best interest at heart; just for being opened minded and having a lil more "god given" intelligence than maybe the "average".
All I have to say is you have to be a absolutely stupid not to utilize the handy free resources that Jehovah Witnesses have My Cousin and her family are all witnesses and I have went to the kingdom halls and conventions I have to be honest I never got baptized because I never got the hang of field service and disagree on some parts yet I have learned Spanish and Khmer from there foreign language programs which would of cost a lot if I would of bought Rosetta Stone! This is a great film. I love how open minded and strong she was about her choices. My girlfriend is a Jehovah Witness and I'm atheist and she is always trying to suck me into it. She has been trying to do studies with me and she has told me everything about the religion, and I honestly have to say fuck Jehovah's Witness. It's so goddamn brain washing and sexist. I'm also and atheist and I told him that it was unlikely that I would ever date someone or stay with them if they were very religious. If you don't mind me asking, how do you guys work things out when the topic of god comes up? Its really interesting that a Jehovah witness is with an atheist, you know?
What the movie fails to show is the result of sexual activity outside of marriage. Unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted disease, whether that guy stuck with her or dumped her for some other conquest, etc. Jehovah's Witnesses try to protect their beloved young ones from all the dangers of this evil world. It's love, not cult like behavior that motivates parents to warn their children of such things.

If the Government outlawed all the things the Witnesses do, would the people stand for it? Of course not! These are personal decisions - as is the choice to leave behind a belief system one cannot support any longer, for biblical and ethical reasons.

@drewkinugirl: in a real Judicial Committee (the meeting with the elders in the back room) the questioning can go on for many hours about ALL the smallest details of the sex (where on the body, exactly what body parts used, enjoyment levels, etc) and then required to be retold again in more JC meetings. It is more common than not for it to go that way. I have 5-6 female friends who have had to go through it personally. It is 100% emotionally & sexually abusive for decades afterward. Terrible.

If you take the time to read through the postings by Watchtower apologist on YouTube (by the way, forbidden by "the organization"), you will see paper thin logic spread over pre digested slogans.
I would be willing to bet a considerable amount that this girl is no longer a Witness by the time she is 21. Why else is she here if she is not seriously questioning what she hears?

Every review I've read from those unfamiliar with the religion has mentioned that the religion was treated with sympathy, even if they disagree with some practices.

I was a Witness and the elders are rude and and they do give you ultimatums..you have to believe their doctrine without question, if you have doubts about their beliefs you'd better keep them to yourself or you will be disfellowshipped...some witnesses have recieved a thourough brain washing..
