@jorial6675 - Are you and Nikki Giovanni (whoever that is) nuts? James Brown could have taken 'Respect' to a whole other level. He could take virtually anyone's song, change it up, and kill it!
@PaulDA2000 Um, Nikki Giovanni is a very famous writer, educator, civil rights activist and is considered one of the greatest African-American poets in all of literature. She is currently a distinguished professor of English at Virginia Tech. "Aretha sings 'Money Won't Change You' but James Brown can't sing 'Respect'" is a direct quote from her famous recording "Poem For Aretha". I suggest you look up the recording to understand the context of the quote and the reference to James Brown.
@PaulDA2000 Cheega's comment "...the advent of Aretha pulled Ray Charles from Marlboro country" is also a direct quote from "Poem For Aretha" by Nikki Giovanni. Check it out... it's a really great piece.
@jorial6675 - Appreciate Nikki, love Aretha, but - Nikki is wrong here, because James' version is better than Aretha's. To sing something after someone else does, doesn't mean it's automatically better.
A Masterpiece !
Aretha en état de grâce...
