At the same time, banks sold the mortgages to people on WallStreet, who got stuck holding the hot potato. Since the mortgages aren't being paid down, the mortgages that were sold aren't worth so much, and have a lower value because they have higher defaults than the credit rating agencies estimated (well, lied about).
