  • The theme music is annoying

  • Terrorism as defined by this great expert Louise Richardson:"the deliberate targeting of noncombatants for a political purpose". The killing of about a million noncombatants in Iraq and Afghanistan by the US "state"(as opposed to we the people or we the 99%)is by far the greater evil. Of course 911 was a horrible act. But those that still believe that 911 was a cause for Islam vs 911 was blowback" to bloody policies of US state pre 911, are ignorant of US republic become empire post ww2.

  • The theme music on basic synthesizer reminds me of the old Gumby claymation children's series. Besides the point i know. Both Gumby and this series are great in their different ways.

  • Thanks!

  • interesting how she uses the pause sound ehm instead of the usual american umh or ahh. However she uses that poor speaking fallback less than most american speakers. the UK journalists and speakers seem really good at not using this pause speaking sound, word, whatever one calls it. They just stay silent until they find there thought pattern again. Not saying the British or good speakers have the higher moral ground. Probably this comment makes me dumber than most. just "killing time"

  • This woman knows the score. She knows for one thing that Terrorism is more an effect than cause. The cause for terrorism is desperatation in trying something to get the oppressor hegemonic imperialist group or state from oppressing and exploiting your politically and economically weak(but often resource rich) people or state. She is right up there with Tariq Ali, Parenti, Chomsky, et al. She is a valuable person that our leaders should consult with.

  • Did he die?

  • She never seems to question 'why' America even has policies in the middle east, accepting that it does and these are defacto just policies.

  • @samuidave I totally agree with you against of our post ww2 policies(exploitative, destructive and deadly ACTIONS)in the middle east, not to mention in Latin America, Asia and Africa. But because she does not question our policies in the middle east in this particular interview does not mean she agrees or disagrees with them. That is a question that was not put to her. She seems to infer here and there to be critical of our policies in middle east. Just an assumption. We should do a search.

  • To create Israel, the zioniste used terrorism. To liberate France, De Gaule used terrorism.

Irish to liberate themselves used terrorism.

Palestinian to liberate themselves used terrorisn. So what is the line between terrorism and resistance.

USA is using terrorism by financing a terrorist state like the Zionist in Palestine.

  • excellent worker!

  • "The means that they use and not the ends that they pursue that determines whether a group is a terrorist..

Nobody's willing to label a group as terrorist if they agree with their goals, if they think the terrorist objective is just.. and I say that's irrelevent.

People with perfectly legitimate goals have employed terrorist tactics."

  • what is the definition of terrorism? who produces terror!! so that could be america its self who is producing teror in muslim world and supporting israel

  • Oh my God. "What Do Terrorists Want".? They want to freakin' KILL us, lady ! Watch for my new book, expected out in May!

  • Feel-good piffle. Pathetic.

  • I would love to see her go to Afghanistan and Pakistan and patiently explain to them that the Americans are human beings, that they are not 1-dimensional bad guys, and that the only reason they are invading countries is because their honor was insulted on 911.

I'd love to see her tell the Taliban that they sould deny the US the importance of attacking it, and that they might be able to solve their problems by better understanding America.

  • Why are you so angry and dead set against her? Relax for a second, will you?

  • I am not angry or dead set against her, I just partially disagree. I am very relaxed. To come across otherwise was not my intention.

  • There seems to be a dichotomy that she draws:

One the one hand, you have terrorists, whose actions can be explained as a function of their circumstances, and whose responses are all but inevitable from a given provocation.

But, at the same time, non-terrorist groups like the Bush administration should be completely immune from anything of the sort.

It is pretty clear that if Bush (or anyone else) had done much different on 911 they wouldn't be in office very long.

  • Fuckin hell that music is rubbish

  • L. R, has produced overdue and essential primer on terrorism and how to tackle it. Understanding the Enemy, Containing the Threat is the book many have been waiting for. Richardsons approach is clear and simple, and is deeply informed by the personal insights of one who, as a student in Dublin, was briefly recruited by the political wing of the I.R.A. She has since organized seminars and war games that have brought together academics, former terrorists and those she calls activists.

  • The problem with this war is not that Saddamn or the Taleban were better rulers than ourselves; its the deliberate duplicity. The war was justified under false pretense of WMD, and it's called a war on terror, when its really a euphemism for war on the middle east for specific objectives. If we should be behind this, why don't they speak the truth?

Obviously, they are corrupt and incompetent and fear candid review. That is why I don't accept 'Al-Quaeda is bad' at face value. A history of lies.

  • Prof Louise speaks beautifully, level, astute, intelligent, easy to understand. I was listening to her on RTE1 today and enjoyed her eloquent perspective on Ireland in today's world.

  • Excellent interview. I never heard of this girl until 30 minutes ago- she's talking in a special New Year's Day interview hosted by the President of Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1. She's very honest and fair-minded about Irish history. And most perceptive about terrorism- her historical training is clearly showing. Its a refreshing break from the myopic discourse which invariably marks this topic.

  • I too would like to purchase a Masters degree in booring banter.

  • lol, this video looks like it's been made in the 1980's!

  • Sir:

    Countries, not countrys.

    Their not there.

Learn English and people will take you seriously.

  • LOBBY2000,

You have no idea what the hell you are talking about. It is so funny that all three trashy groups of Fascist Israeli lobbyists, left-over of Pahlavi Trash and finally servants of Islamic regime attacking him and naming him names. Trital Parsi's family, including his father were suffered and imprisoned during both Pahlavi's Trash and Trashy Mullahs and now a Trashy Pro Israeli Fascists and a garbage liar like you to attack him is understandable, because he is a true Iran Lover.

  • the pentagon and mossad did 911,

. the bin laden fairy tale is psyop nonsense fabricated for weak minded americans to enlist popular support for the american war machine and its israeli, oil cartel, neocon fascist benefiting role in the middle east

  • Standing up for one's people is great IF you do it right. Violence is almost never right. Bin laden would be more successful if he emulated purveyors of non-violence, like, say, Ghandi or MLK.

  • Most white people don't naturally espouse the theories of non-violence that Ghandi embraced. So it is ironic to hear these weapon amassing people sit and lecture "terrorists" that they should be non-violent. Ha! Do they think they are stupid? The US is not be dealt with like an Indian -England situation, but rather as the violent assholes they are to the rest of the world, i.e giving millions in weapons to Israel to kill Palestinian children.

  • I agree. 9/11 "truthers" are, quite simply, paranoid. They still think that the WTC collapsed at 'freefall speed,' even though a perfunctory look at the video proves it wrong. You just can't argue with them. They're right. We're wrong and the whole world is involved in a conspiracy.

  • Like I said..."becoming a American is a license for putting blinders on". Enough said.

  • I don't get it...such a smart lady but still thinks 9/11 was done by non-domestic Terrorists..I guess becoming a American is a license for putting blinders on....very sad. BTW all definitions of terrorism she covers also apply to the Bush administration

  • Yes. She is a smart lady. That should tell you something...

  • AL-FATIHA (THE OPENING)

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

    Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the worlds;

    Most Gracious, Most Merciful;

Master of the Day of Judgment.

Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek.

    Show us the straight way,

The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray.

    (ameeen)

  • This video was really useful for my tutorials. I am currently studying World Politics in my first year as one of my modules at Queen's University Belfast.

  • This was excellent.

  • It's the Koran, stupid!

Muslims are thrilled to have a jihad they can die in to escape Allah's horrific depiction of eternal hell. They are taking advantage of Allah's ONLY GUARANTEE of escaping "drinking boiling water like a diseased camel with a raging thirst" and having their skin replaced by Allah every other day in hell to "taste " the fruit of their disobedience from failing to kill us

infidels until only Islam remains. [Koran 4:56]

  • The percentage of muslims taking part in the jihad are minimal, blaming the koran for muslim terroists is beyond ignorant try reading Bin Ladden's own reasons for his actions in his "letter to the American people", I am a 18 year old athiest new zealander of irish descent and I agree with hsi justifaction.

  • While terroism is a horrendous occurence when looking at the situation i see that terroism is unfortunately the most influential tool available to Bin Ladden and it is better than doing nothing while millions of his "people" who are innocent are murdered by American foreign policy

  • Young person, what a self-deluded path you have chosen for beginning your life.

  • Self-deluded how?

  • Terrorists are people too
