Why would you people think you could get into Slug's head just by YouTube. You people have no clue. We can make guesses, but make it into your own. Take this song and make it your own personal meaning.
like most other commenters i thought this song was about an ex girlfriend, but i read somewhere that slug wrote it about george bush, which makes sense too (he refers to everything as she/her in all his songs so you cant get hung up on that). then again, its slug, so really it can be either one, or both, or neither...
@SPquigger71 well i know 'your glasshouse' is about Iraq (check out /watch?v=19iJHEdGepM ) so he's done it before, but even if this one isn't about GWB its still impressive that those connections can even be made in the first place
its about letting a bird (girl) you love go, because she wants to be free. at first you do it because you want her to be happy, but the second you see her flying in the air (enjoying life without you), you feel angry, jealous, confused. you say you hate her and you constantly speak the worst of her, but in the end you still love her. you miss her and want her back. (my beautiful bird has gone away)
You got it, but the bird can be replaced by whatever you want. The song could also be about people who are not yet freed (like the caged bird which has been freed).
this is a fucking sick song, damn this guy have such an incredible vocabulary.
he expresses every single word in a way that makes him look so... fucking angry, was the first two words i could think of. Peace to atmosphere for making such heavy hiphop.
by the way.. the seven individuals disliking this video is the birds, it must have been the birds! disguting critters, it must! we should have known better then trust! This disease infested ball of lust and carnage! Pieces of garbage!
this song is about him letting a bird free (or girl), you know the whole "if you love something set it free" and then it starts fling away beautifully and he just wants it back at any cost. Its freedom and beauty makes him jealous or angry and he feels worse about him self. He doesn't actually hate the bird, "my beautiful bird has gone away". Slug explains this in a video on here at a live concert.
Gotta love slug and Ant. They do some real shit. I just released my first EP and I am trying to do the same. I'd love it if you guys checked out my page, and told me what you thought. Thanks everyone! Take care!
One of my favorite things about the way Slug wrote is his ability to leave interpretation open. At first I thought about how this is about a girl, but listening closely, I kind of started to relate it to The United States. We are kind of an arrogant country but the worlds leading super power. We cause a lot of jealousy and hostility from other countries, and because we are at the top we are that bird. Just kind of my interesting interpretation, I guess.
One of my favorite Atmosphere songs. It's a damn shame the direction this group turned... some call it selling out, some call it maturing as an artist. Either way it isn't the atmosphere I fell in love with. Whatever happened to the poetry, the beats, and the emotion? It just sounded so raw and unfiltered, like nothing before it. Oh well. I still got that underground atmosphere I know and love.
@barxcodedxloser That doesn't have anything to do with what he said, does it? Saying Atmosphere is the best rapper is like saying Iron Maiden is the best singer.
@ZoomJoke55 No shit Sherlock. He wrote the song though. Check it out if you don't believe me and then you can talk. (: Or you could ask him, like I did personally.
Who knows. If you're asking because you are hoping to hear more of it, just look into Jersey hardcore bands or something. Probably just Slug in the screaming sample though.
@barxcodedxloser Atmosphere is not a rapper, you mean their the best hip-hop group of all time. The best rapper you refer to is Slug, now him..Yeah hes too ill <3
@syngar99 haha yeah i thought that problem was done with when i moved here but yeah your people are slaves. indonesians get slapped with dicks for cheap manufacturing. you probably too
damn i wish i knew what he was rapping about. what i think of when i hear this is either the goverment, mainstream hip hop, or those fucking bitches in highschool that have their noses turned up to everyone and diss cats like me on the reg.
I love the raw emotion in this song. The energy in this song pulls meaning from your very inner self. Like if it was an emotional prism when your mind passes it's own light through it. You take it as your own no matter how you listen to it.
People love Atmosphere because it is so easy to relate to the music. Every time I hear this song it reminds me of night I partied hard as hell and when I was on my way home the birds where chirping as the sun came up and I hated it because I knew I'd already blown a day that hadn't started. You don't get that from all the FAKE ass dopeboy music and the only people that like that shit are FAKE ass/ wanna be dopeboys.
no joke, i think hes talking about the reptillians/winged serpents/lizards(lizzies)/draconians which are from the planet in the Alpha Draconi star system of the Orion Constellation and created by the their parent race The Carians.
despite what the songs true meaning is, i still feel the song is beautiful, full of emotion and in a way can relate. when u hear a song that you feel you can relate to even tho that isnt what the artist intended its still ok because in a way art is meant to be experienced different from creator to viewer and that no two people will percieve anything the same!
It seems to me that this song is a response to Maya Angelou's poem "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings." Maya Angelou is a world-renowned African American poet, and her poem is a moving portrayal of the beauty of freedom. This song expresses the animosity and frustration of people who are NOT YET free, to whom the free bird is insulting and offensive. It might not be the author's personal view, but it captures an important viewpoint that definitely exists in our culture.
@laviniariley I would have to totally agree with you.
But this does sound to me like a very angry man who let his bird get away from him and now is very regretful that she is free and he still remains in her cage of love. With the end "My beautiful bird has gone away [x12]" and reference "This disease infested ball of lust and carnage-Piece of garbage with wings and she has the guts to sing" says she cheated and he is now realizing it was his fault as well - hence the regret and anger.
and judging to the responses to this video of men referencing certain women in their lives and what they did to the them. ..I would have to say this is to be an accurate point of view. I am not sure if the anger that is continued after she flew away is actual anger or their own regret? One would have to wonder.
it could be anything. i never put together the "lucifer" thing tho so i feel like an idiot now. but i honestly think lucy was originaly his on-and-off gf (cuz he says so in an interview) but i think its evolved into meaning all the bullshit in life. idk hes a genius though. honestly the greatest rapper ive ever heard. thats why i have like 200 of his songs haha.
@elmer4life ya it started out meaning his ex gf he says that in an interveiw he also saysthat in later songs it did change tohavemany different meanings, from goverment to war to MANY other meanings.
Lucy Ford. Say it fast. Lucifer. There are a few different explanations about who Lucy is. Some say his cat, some say his ex gf's. Some say a metaphor for any of the bullshit he dealt with. No one can really know so all these theories are odious.
No, its about one of his Ex's (there all refered to as Lucy, the female Devil) The thing is, Sean isn't an innocent in all the case's. He is unhealthy in a way (hense all the unhealthy relationships) He lets you on some of this with a few lines; "We should have known better then to trust"(refering to both of them), "Well I'll shake her from her branch, tear apart her nest
Break her skinny legs and fry her eggs up for breakfast" (His over-reaction twords the situation).
totally agree, everyone's got their demons and sluggo's no different. Hence the discography full of references to unhealthy relationships hes been involved in.
I don't think it's about a girl. I think it's about society in general. When we find individuals who are actually happy and free, we envy. It's part of the human condition. Such hatred for those with the things we wish we had!
Not trying to shut you down, but it has nothing to do with society. Its just an analogy for his relationship. Also, "A Bird" is british slang for a bitch. Hes just an amazing MC with intelegence between his shoudlers. Always (well, use to) have great metaphores/analogys.
@shnikka94 exactly bro. i wish i could meet cats like you. imma sophmore in highschool so all i ever hear about is how fucking great drake and lil wayne are. its bullshit dude, theyre rapping for money and theyre songs have no meaning. theyre just rhyming words together, theyre not telling stories. it pisses me off this mainstream bullshit.

I'm not sure, but it could be they sampled and distorted some parts out of Abbey Lincoln's 'I know why the caged bird sings', it would make sense in light of the title and content of this song.
"inherit" is a more or less subtle reference to "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth"- Meek meaning something like humble or patient
the intro voice is cool... she has a nice english accent

totally agree, everyone's got their demons and sluggo's no different.

@TheObicha
I don't think any of us can really know unless we sat down and talked to Slug about the song. It could mean a lot of things at once.

DoggieDOH 2 years ago
Just listen, its not about birds that fly, I'll tell you that.
ncshuriken 2 years ago
@DoggieDOH It's about envy and how people will hate someone just because the person has something they want.

work me lord by janis joplin
KyplayaZ4lyfe 2 years ago
I'm not sure, but it could be they sampled and distorted some parts out of Abbey Lincoln's 'I know why the caged bird sings', it would make sense in light of the title and content of this song.

both inherit / inhabit makes sense in a way
"inherit" is a more or less subtle reference to "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth"- Meek meaning something like humble or patient
