  • heard this in knoxville. wonderful song.

  • there are not many songwriters at all who can talk to your soul. this genius can. and does :)

  • Great song, thanks for posting it!

  • This song is Great! You have to to know that Gordy and Dylan sat down and hashed this thing out! Either or, just a great song! Love both of em!

  • great new one i've been listening since sit down young stranger its great to hear songs that go with this time in his life

  • Thank U Canada for sharing Gordon's music with the rest of the world.

  • yeah you guys are right, i saw him in 06 and it was shocking how his voice has aged, but he sounds a Hell of a lot better than Bobby and Joni

  • @ExitosGnosis i had first seen him in 07, his voice was different from his earlier days. , i saw him again this year in march. he was winded. i am grateful he still coems out for us the fan. lord knows he doesnt need the money. this concert was with carter lancaster and not terry clements. :"(

  • Just like that river we too are going to the sea. Great song

  • I've been a Gordon Lightfoot fan since 1976 and I saw him in concert last week. This has just become one of my favorite songs.

  • @rickietube1 aye. this song is deep. this is gordon looking at teh end. of life of everythign. i hope this day doesnt happen for a long time. GOD bless him for keepin on keepin on

  • What a wonderful song. I'm glad he is still with us. I can't imagine a world without his voice.

  • I so agree linda. This song makes me cry just thinking about it.

  • @lindamcd1217

this song means he is tired and wants to reach his destination. he won't be looking up old friends because he will be dead, living with God in heaven. It's a river of light. that's a metaphor for God. ever again has an ominous tist haronicaly. you can hear it if you listen. the poet is usin this for us to take pause. it'sslightly dramatic but then the river goes on carrying us all along to the same destination.

  • yes, that is the way I took it also. I can't stand to think of it.

  • @patfealy i know. i could sense it tonihgt in knoxville tonihgt. he seemed short of breath alot. . i hope hes ok.

  • @patfealy i figured this out. am going to buy teh album so i can put together a tribue when his time comes. GOD hoping hes around for ages to come. though :)

  • amazing...a journey through life, song by a great singer....wonderful....

  • Wonderful song...

  • Of all of the newer songs by Gordon Lightfoot, this one is by far, my favorite.

The journey upon the waters of the river, must

at least in part, be alluding to an infinite journey as well as a physical journey; which I

can truly relate to, having only narrowly escaped a life threatening circumstance not too long ago myself. He has always had a very

special way of making his stories into our own

stories, too. The idea of being on the river,

and a part of the river, is just very comforting.

  • It's hard to know the mind of GL. He's never been quick with an interpretation or explanation. But ya gotta wonder if. . .

"I won't be lookin' up old friends" , and "trouble don't mean nothin to me, and I've had my share of it" . . if these lines perhaps refer to some of GL's hard times of the '74 to '80 time frame. "My tears will be all in the past" . . very characteristic line from GL (an echo from his other great song "I'd rather press on, don't want to rest easy". Gotta love the man.

  • Thanks for sharing, my friend!

    Lovely song......very nice vid, too!

  • Keep 'em comin' Gord.

  • gotta love it> it sounds Dylanesk, but even Bobby can't hold a candle to Gordy!
