I like your debate here. I just want to add one thing: socialism means that the main tools of production is in the hands of the state. Are there any countries in Europe where it is true? I think it is an other question how the European governments want to help their own society with jobs, health care, education and so on..That's not socialism, just a very bad idea to make people think that it's the state's job to provide their job, house or car.
Well socialism by it self doesn't mean "everything is in the Governments hand". But it means large enterprises are taken away from their owners. And what Obama wants... If any Corporation or Industry makes too much money the Government takes it away. (Windfall profits) If he decides Home Depot makes too much' he takes the amount that he thinks was too much profits.
As I recall, none of those countries are socialist... Hungary WAS a Communist dictatorship, but obviously that is very different than a socialist state. Germany might be the closest. Poland, etc. are clearly not socialist, they're ultracaptialist and have been since the end of the Cold War. Sweden and Holland are probably the closest states to socialism, theyre pretty good places to live and unemployment rates are meaningless by themselves: the US is a 3d world country in some places.
In Sweden the unemployment rate is 8.1% as we speak and in Holland it's 4.2%. The US is 5.4% now but it was 4.5% or under for the past 7 years. Putting that aside, Hungary (I hate to admit) is socialist, so is Italy and France was until Sarkozy (a Hungarian) took over. Yes Hungary was a communist dictatorship until 1992. After that they were free for a while but the gyurcsany goverbment is the socialist party and they are socialist. That is why I don't go to visit. I hate socialism ... Sorry...
One other thing you have to take in to consideration. There is not one other Country on planet Earth that so many people work in their 70s and 80s as in the US. I know the reasons for that too but don't want get in to details. My Father is still working in Hungary and he is 72 years old, but it's very rare in Hungary or in Europe.

Gyurcsány and his party are Socialist only in name. They're attempting to change Hungary into an ultra-capitalist state without socialized healthcare, and comfy education and old-age pension plans. The main opposition party which is supposed to be the "conversative, semi-nationalistic" party is actually more liberal because they intend to keep the socialized healthcare system.
In 1989 Hungary, when Hungary left the Iron Curtain and became a Capitalist Democracy, it didn't get rid of many of the Socialized systems that the Hungarians had become accustomed to. If having Socialized systems in your opinion is imprisonment and not-free, then Hungary was never free prior to Gyurcsány.

I don't know about Liz, but she is correct about the numbers. In many countries the unemployment is even higher than she suggests. So she under estimated those numbers. You could move there from Canada but let me tell you baby! The USA does not want socialism!!!!!
I can get you more info, but Austria has the lowest around 5%. Bulgaria is the worst with 15-18%. Hungary is around 8% and France is around 10% right now.

Also Hungary and other former socialist countries are now called 'socialist market economies' . It's an interesting expression isn't it? Though they have found a name for that mule which was formed here :(

I like your debate here. I just want to add one thing: socialism means that the main tools of production is in the hands of the state. Are there any countries in Europe where it is true? I think it is an other question how the European governments want to help their own society with jobs, health care, education and so on..That's not socialism, just a very bad idea to make people think that it's the state's job to provide their job, house or car.

Well socialism by it self doesn't mean "everything is in the Governments hand". But it means large enterprises are taken away from their owners. And what Obama wants... If any Corporation or Industry makes too much money the Government takes it away. (Windfall profits) If he decides Home Depot makes too much' he takes the amount that he thinks was too much profits.

As I recall, none of those countries are socialist... Hungary WAS a Communist dictatorship, but obviously that is very different than a socialist state. Germany might be the closest. Poland, etc. are clearly not socialist, they're ultracaptialist and have been since the end of the Cold War. Sweden and Holland are probably the closest states to socialism, theyre pretty good places to live and unemployment rates are meaningless by themselves: the US is a 3d world country in some places.

In Sweden the unemployment rate is 8.1% as we speak and in Holland it's 4.2%. The US is 5.4% now but it was 4.5% or under for the past 7 years. Putting that aside, Hungary (I hate to admit) is socialist, so is Italy and France was until Sarkozy (a Hungarian) took over. Yes Hungary was a communist dictatorship until 1992. After that they were free for a while but the gyurcsany goverbment is the socialist party and they are socialist. That is why I don't go to visit. I hate socialism ... Sorry...

One other thing you have to take in to consideration. There is not one other Country on planet Earth that so many people work in their 70s and 80s as in the US. I know the reasons for that too but don't want get in to details. My Father is still working in Hungary and he is 72 years old, but it's very rare in Hungary or in Europe.

I appreciate your civility, no aplogies necessary. anyway, unemployment rates are meaningless by themselves. as are ages for employed persons: alot of 70 year olds are now forced to work minimum wage jobs usually reserved for teenagers because their pensions are too small.
i dont consider france or italy socialist democracies - they are capitalist democracies with large social programs. i dont consider communist totalitarians socialists either though.

That is why I said I don't want get in to details... It's a complex issue. Just like understanding the meaning of the unemployment numbers. It doesn't help much if you are employed, but can not make a living. I just wanted to defend "Liz's" numbers. I can tell you as I studied socialism it only works if you have no ambition, desire to better your self etc... If you want to be an average person in a community of average People. Religious cults are an example for socialism in my opinion.

Gyurcsány and his party are Socialist only in name. They're attempting to change Hungary into an ultra-capitalist state without socialized healthcare, and comfy education and old-age pension plans. The main opposition party which is supposed to be the "conversative, semi-nationalistic" party is actually more liberal because they intend to keep the socialized healthcare system.

In 1989 Hungary, when Hungary left the Iron Curtain and became a Capitalist Democracy, it didn't get rid of many of the Socialized systems that the Hungarians had become accustomed to. If having Socialized systems in your opinion is imprisonment and not-free, then Hungary was never free prior to Gyurcsány.

Hi! I left Europe because I wanted to run away from socialism. My Sisters and Parents still live under a socialist system. So I do know about Socialism and Europe. I don't know about Liz, but she is correct about the numbers. In many countries the unemployment is even higher than she suggests. So she under estimated those numbers. You could move there from Canada but let me tell you baby! The USA does not want socialism!!!!!

I can get you more info, but Austria has the lowest around 5%. Bulgaria is the worst with 15-18%. Hungary is around 8% and France is around 10% right now.

Oh I didn't mention Poland and Slovania. As far as I know in the last few years they never had a lower unemployment rate than 15%. Both Countries...
