  • What a great singer!

  • Thanks for the video! This song means a lot to me! (besides loving PC). You see, I'm a "TCK (Third Culture Kid)". And the thing he says: "home is in your heart" has been always present in my life. I really don't feel at home anywhere I go, because I've been living in different places since my childhood. "Hellos" and "goodbyes" were part of my life, many times. Even nowadays, I just said goodbye to my brother that lives in another country. And I agree, "it gets better, when you get there." Ty :)

  • best song ever. how this got no commercial play is beside me....

  • its sounds like the beatles.

  • I love Phil Collins so much, but this has got to be one of my all time favorite songs of his. This song, to me anyways, has so much emotion, its inspirational, yet sad, yet happy. How is that even possible. Ill tell you how, through Phil Collins. Much love.

  • Comments about Life...Phil Collins....

  • @Johnycable

Oh, I cried a lot on this video...It was so liberating!

    Thank mrdodo for posting it!

  • Yes I really love this...It's so intense yet very calming, I added this to my music channel on my page:-) Wow that's all I can say:-)

  • This is what makes him one of the greatest composers, singers and overall musicians

  • This is the most underated song from Phil Collins! Serioulsy...who cannot apply this song to their life? Thank you, Phil!

  • This song is quite John Lennon-like. Also reminds me of Julian Lennon's Valotte. And Valotte was awesome. Not a fan of Collins' but this song rates high with me.

  • Kicking myself.. I bought the vynil LP back in 1985, have most, if not all, CD's... except No Jacket Required. And so... I missed this music, until today. But no more. I've heard it. And ... the music is amazing. No Jacket Required is one of the best albums of the XXth century. No doubts required !

  • Love this song :)

  • This song was hard to come by!! I own juke boxes and remember this being put on as a B side.......I loved it from day one. Thanks for posting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Perfect this video and song ! ;)

  • definitely one of his best

  • This video makes you realize what an odd, lonely career this can be.

  • Dean,

We should have just moved to California...like you said. You will never see these but I love you and think of you often. This was our song when we moved to Az in 1993...everyone thought we were nuts and we just wanted to be on our own without everyone butting in....Those were still the best years of my life-with you!

  • Don't turn around, don't look down.......epic

  • This song was actually featured in a movie....can't remember the name of it, but it was about kids (teens) who left home & bought an abandoned house.

  • @ArgentaMom

The movie was called "Playing For Keeps" - around 1985 or 1986 and it was one of Marisa Tomei's first movies.

  • Loved this one the first time I heard it

  • Ya'll are going to say that I'm nuts, but I''ve always thought this song would be perfect for the reality TV show "The Real World" (when it's the last episode and they're saying goodbye to each other). Some of the lyrics are fitting: "We said goodbye to a dear old friend...And we packed our bags and left feeling sad...It's the only way..."

  • I love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This was also the 'B' side of "Billy Don't Lose My Number". I bought the 45 for this song only (wasn't really a Phil fan)!

  • J'adore cette chanson !!

  • I miss you Harold.

  • Phil is not go to Brazil. We wating too for the your show . Brasilians is a nature percussion people, for the ritms (samba, forró, maracatú...). The music's phil is a next stile here.

  • yes sir may i have another!

  • It's ironic that my all-time favorite Phil Collins song was added as a bonus track to the "No Jacket Required" CD, like it was some afterthought or filler. Well Mr. Collins, this was no filler. This was one monumental spectacular gorgeous creation that has touched me more than you will ever know or imagine. And what a liberating feeling it is to read the 1000's of comments below to let me know I am far from alone.

  • @shyman99 "It's ironic that my all-time favorite Phil Collins song was added as a bonus track to the "No Jacket Required"

    Agree !!

  • I luv this song !

  • i wish this could've been my graduation song in high school.....it's pretty powerful...

  • Great Music Never Dies,Never Gets Old And Is Constant,Just Like The Great Composers Of Old,Beethoven,Mozart,Chopin,Brahms Etc...

  • love it, and cry too, greets from berlin

  • Superb video, so much feeling, so much soul in the words and your composition. Thanks so much!!!! I have now just ended my third viewing of this :)

  • This is a song that truly touches the heart...

  • Phil always had good vocal and musical arrangements. Nothing cliche about his tones at all. Great artist.

  • We said hello to Phil Collins in Collins in his first record deal came as drummer for Flaming Youth who released a single album, Ark 2 (1969) AND NOW,, we will most likely say good bye to him sometime within this year 2010 as civilhistoryfan1981 stated earlier he is suffering from hearing loss as well as arthritis in his hands and wrists,, GOOD BYE MR COLLINS,, may we never forget you and will ALWAYS have your music to remind us of what a great artist you have truly been over the years,,,

  • 'They don't see, it's the feeling inside'....thanks for sharing 5*

  • i hope that phil collins is OK. i heard that his ears were hurting, wrist is hurting and his neck as well. he was in surgery in switzerland. i hope he OK. that is my favorite artist and member of genesis, in fact his band just got inducted into the rock hall.

  • ive got this on my Cassette from the Both Sides Single :D

    but good lyrics ;)

  • This is such a great song....it still sounds fresh despite being released in 1985.

  • Phil collins i promis one of these days i will meet u it been my dream sence i was 5 ur my idol and im 15 im ur biggest fan pleace type to me I LOVE U No homo

  • THANKS

  • firstmusic--I remember that!! GAH that was the DAY!!

this was our Sr Prom song~

    Peabody High School, Trenton Tennessee

    Home of the Golden Tide!!

  • You couldn't get this song ont the cassette version of the album. It was a bonus track on the CD. In order to get it at the time you either had to get the CD (which were still new in 1985) or the 45 rpm record...as it was the "B" side track.

  • I am a huge Phil & Genesis fan and this is by far my favorite song of all time.. Period!!! Very underrated and beautiful song with a lot of hidden meaning!!!

  • My all-time favorite Phil Collins song. TIMELESS.

    Never gets old!

  • THis was the flip side of the 45 "don't lose my number"

  • Oh HECK YEAH!

  • Happy 25th Anniversary No Jacket Required. This is an awesome song.

  • Love this song, one of my favs from him!

  • Very good song indeed, and very Lennon-esque, (a la "Imagine") too.

I first discovered it when I borrowed the CD from a friend. Up until I saw the track listing on the CD, I always thought No Jacket Required ended with "Take Me Home" no matter what medium (tape or vinyl) the album was on.

  • @TeamNES1 , Very much like Lennon. Didn't realize it till your post. Also check out the great Beatle satire band The Rutles and the song "Cheese and Onions"!

  • Yes, one of Phil's best songs, and very underplayed! His 1991 concert in DC was the best I've seen. 2 and 1/2 hours and he never missed a note!

  • The most wanted guy in entertainment for a fairly short time 84-85, Phil was the man, he flew back in time to appear at live aid at rfk after wembley, 3 #1 hits, album of the year, movies, tv shows.. very few accomplished what he did then.

  • Video perfeito! Nunca tinha visto algo assim antes! muito bom mesmo! Salve Phil Collins!! =)

  • Always with you, looking forward.

  • It wasn't on the LP version of No Jacket Required but it was on the CD version. Love the song, very Lennon.

  • WOW!!! Really a great video U`ve done! Such to the point!

We will always miss Phil on stage! Was just able to see him twice, but those evenings were one the best ones in my life! His music is so passionate!

Have a nice declining years, bro!!! :)

  • I love this song....i always loved it.

  • This has to be one of THE BEST Phil Collins songs ever.

  • this song is good but makes me cry a bit

  • I love this too, but don't know why.

  • LOL @ that kid bouncing down the aisle. Love this song, it's one of my favorites.

  • GREAT song! IMO Phil's best. This song wasn't even on the original album vesrion of No Jacket. What was the record company thinking? It should have been a single.

  • It was released as the flip of the single "Don't Lose My Number". It was a popular album-cut around 1988 and at that time a re-recorded version could be heard on radio. Unfortunately, I don't know if that recording was ever made available commercially.

  • You may be thinking of a remixed version of the song. It was released on the soundtrack of a b- movie called "Playing for Keeps."

  • I don't think that he is "hanging up his drumsticks". He's simply chosen to spend time with his young children. I've seen interviews where he's said he will release another album just doesn't know when.

  • This song was playing the night I got the call a friend of mine was killed in a car accident. I will always remember her, and this song plays on my heart when I hear it. RIP Amanda

  • He has a touch of John Lennon in this song! Most at the beginning

  • hes retiring?????

  • Yes he has retired from frontline music he will still continue to write but will probably never release another solo album. Testify didnt do that well and was one of his worse performing solo albums in the charts. Sad but he has decided to hang his drum sticks up

  • Enjoy retirement Phil, I'll miss you.

  • My son-not a day has gone by that I don't think of you. Since your passing a few weeks ago-I still find myself looking for you. You have no idea how much I miss and love you. One day, I know I'll see you again, but for now-never forget your mom loves you, baby.

  • my heart mourns with you for you most greatest lost.....

  • I am so very, very sorry for the loss of your precious son. You are in my thoughts and prayers & may God hold & comfort your heart at this most difficult time

  • Thank you-I appreciate you both taking the time to comment. Though things will never be the same-our son forever lives in our hearts.

  • great song and great video

  • best drums !!!!!

  • Great song!

  • Where did you get The Long Goodnight?

  • @kjelici9 it was available thru the genesis website and on sale when genesis toured in 2007 at the trade stands but i think it may have been deleted now

  • Now, with audio again...=)

  • So much for a free world

  • fuck u trademark.

  • copyright copyright that is all we here on youtube time has come for people to TRADE the good old way ile swap my music for your music

  • congratulations for beurocracy ruining our lives once more wmg fo guck yourself people love music its in our minds and our souls and you may try to take it away from us but screw you utorrent :)

  • This is total bullshit I cant hear the goddanm song

  • Well done WMG. Ta for spoiling a great tune. Hope your happy guys.

  • too old here.. i prefer him in the 90...:S

  • This is a fantastic song, almost Beatles-esque in its simple melody, piano, vocals. I just love it. I think the reason why folks have soured on Phil is because the quality of his music went a bit south in the last decade or so, and his personal life becoming taboid fodder hasn't helped him much either. Still, he's written some wonderful music, and his time with Genesis is also not forgotten by his true fans.

  • Great song. You could only get it as a bonus track on the CD. If you bought vinyl or cassette you were SOL.

For you younger folk...vinyl LP's (Long Play) and cassette tapes were still the main formats back in 1985. CD's were still a rather new thing!! And there was no down loading!! LOL!!

  • I would have to go look this up, but I think this may have been a b-side for the Sussudio 12" single. I am pretty sure I do have this on vinyl somewhere. But yeah, vinyl. "What's that?"

  • Brilliant song. Will someone please tell me why people hate him?? Really don't understand!!!

  • Thanks for making this great video for one of the best Phil songs ever!

Love the synchronization with the drums at 3:00.

  • This wonderful song was the best track on an outstanding album!

  • This song was a bonus track on the CD version of "No Jacket Required".

  • And for those of us old enough (like myself lol) it was also a b-side (on a 45rpm single) to "Billy dont lose that number" If im not mistaken. I remember having it and actually playing that side more than the reason I bought the record to begin with. Great song!

  • My mistake, the song was "Dont lose my number" not the way I named it before. I just wanted to correct that before someone else surely will.

  • Astonishingly good video. I could cry every time! It's realy wunderful!!!!!

    PHIL... FOR EVER!!!!!

  • This song was included on the 1985 album "No Jacket Required"...but has a bouns track on the CD only. It wasn't available on the cassette tape at all.

  • A very underrated song by Mr. Collins. Thank you for posting;)

  • I want the job of the guy that holds Phil`s glasses !!!

  • I want the job of the cable guy..or coffee attendant at the concert

  • love it

  • This was a bonus track on the No Jacket Required album.

  • I have been hoping someone would put this song on here. Very underrated song, I love it.

  • this song is from the overlooked 1986 movie playing for keeps starring daniel jordano and marisa tomei and its only on the no jacket required cd only.

  • Simply brilliant, but then again isn't everthing that Phil creates superb.

  • I love this song. I had it on a 45rpm and it was the B-side to Billy dont you lose that number (I think). Im glad I got tired of that song and flipped it over because this one is far better.

  • lovely song thank you for sharing (:

  • Haven't heard this song in years!! It was great back then, and is great now. Love Phil's voice! So pure and full of emotion. Thanks for posting. Nice video too :)

  • Next to--TAKE ME HOME song,,,,its the best song off the CD

  • nice song

    is it original video clip?

    anybody have the ori?

    thanks

  • Beautiful song from an awesome album. Thanks for the video!

  • Oh, I just love this! It really brings back memories. Thanx for posting!!

  • yeah I remember, the most wanted man in entertainment 1985, album of the year, 3 #1 hits, his movie, tv spots.. remember 'rat race' on Miami Vice, live aid..he performed at Wembley and flew back in time to perform at RFK..coolest song by him.

  • Beatiful and moving song.

  • a beautiful song!!!is a classic.should have been a classic not a b side.well done phil.

  • John Lennon was the paradigm of Phil Collins and with his growing career, he beat him by far :-)

    Regards

    Origin

  • phil is no jon lennon but he had his won unique style and influenced a different generation of listeners

  • Yup, I would say this is the greatest song that never made it big and no one knows why. Its nearly perfect: great sound, great vocals, excellent drums and keys, tells a meaningful sad story of major life change. It should've topped the charts.

  • agreed, even down to the slight echo on phils voice, this song is so good!

  • Yep...you could only get this song on the CD version of the album. If you bought the tape you were SOL.

  • I never noticed that, I'll have to pull out my CD and cassette and compare the two.

  • I loved this song when i first heard it and haven't heard it in 20 years or so. It was the b side to the 7" Take me Home and was not on the vinyl release of No Jacket Required. Thanks for posting!

  • Well it really don't matter much where you are

Cause home is in your heart - How true that is. Thanks for posting video.

  • I always wondered when I was a kid why I didn't hear this song on the radio more often and more importantly, why I could never find it on any of his albums. Of course during the age of the internet I've gotten the answers to those questions and countless others in regards to obscure songs such as this. And for the record, Phil Collins should have his own holiday.

  • omg, i will pass this amendment. so what date out of the year should we make is holiday?? huge fan here. love th vocals, piano, just everything.

  • Not sure i may have sent this to you before? Anyhow this never got much play and i think one of his best.

  • Just wonderful.. Thanx for it..

  • ...the CD/album was 'No jacket Required'

  • At a time when cassettes outsold record albums and newly released compact discs, this song was a bonus track on the CD

  • One of the greatest songs he ever did. I tried to find it on a cassette back in the day but a radio station DJ told me he didn't think it was ever included on albums released to the public - only on the ones provided to stations. It is on Itunes, though! Great song.

  • this song it's n° 11 on the Cd "no jacket required" 1985

  • Thanks for the info. I didn't have a CD player back then so I only looked on the cassettes. I'll have to go get the CD!

  • Good material.

  • I'd love to have the job of the guy that holds phil's glasses jejeje!!!

  • I had the privilege of watching Phil perform back in the early 90's during his Both Sides Tour. He is my favorite and always will be. I will treasure that moment as one of the best times in my life so far. He is a remarkable entertainer. If you ever get the chance to watch him perform, DO NOT PASS IT UP!! :)

  • great tune again,i guess i love them all i cant decide which is the best,so i guess i will just have to listen to all i can lol, thanks for being you phil,im a happy lady love ya babe, angie

  • Absolutely love this video! It's also one of my favourite Phil songs!

  • Is that means phil will leave us forever ?

I know this song but the video make me sad).

  • this was our prom theme song in 1988. It brings back good and sad feelings.

  • also it was on the cd only. NO JACKET REQUIRED

  • You're right ,,, Also in cassettes..1985 Great year and lots of fine memories !!!!!

  • THANK YOU PHIL....!!!

  • this is one of the finest Genesis songs...and terribly under rated. This is a very moving song if you really listen to it. Thanks for the video.

  • this is one of the finest Genesis songs
