Even George Harrison fell prey to the disease known as 80's music. The true beginning of the end for good music. Consider it the bad joke told by a drunk uncle at the funeral of a beloved family member.
The 90's were the long eulogies, and the 00's were the sudden rainstorm that sneaks up as the coffin is being lowered down into the ground.
This decade is the awful funeral home food that gets served after the wet, annoyed, and still bitterly sad mourners leave the cemetery.
1988 and especially the start of the year continiued about a 2 2 1/2 year run of maybe the best music as a group of the 1980's. A lot of the early #1's in 1988 were released late in 1987 and continued a stunning run af great #1's. A lot of good music that never made #1 was also released in this era.
ha ha "Rickrolled in 1988"! In all seriousness, that was actually one of my favorite songs back then, and to see the rickroll phenomena (spelling) the past few years...is...weird, because this video and song actually holds alot of good memories for me, heh
I was there an adult in 1988 and I've never heard of any of these songs, and only 8 of the singers. I don't regret to have been unexposed to them. These folks are all outsiders -- outside of the Kingdom of Heaven. Though, those, of them, who still breathe have the opportunity to become insiders.
Best year of my young life back then...Being 18, free and unjaded? What a friggen awesome time it was~!!!! Thanks for this, and reminding me while it was a long while ago, life is short!
There are some awesome songs here. One point to note is the vocal quality. Most of these people are amazingly talented. What a privilege to hear them.
So Emotional I was doing HVAC work for Kmart Corporation, Got My Mind Set on You I was running a smoke shop, Father Figure I was rear ended by a damned Chevy Corsica POS taxicab, Rick Astley I was living between New York, Baltimore, and DC, Get Out of My Dreams and Kokomo (is that Kenny G?) I was doing inventory type odd jobs for Safeway, Freebird I was running a hotel bar in Texas.
1988 was by far the worst year of my life. I was 42, and I was wiped out totally by betrayal and had to start all over again. Never have got it all back, but some things are much better now. Strange, some of the music that was so much part of my heartache that year is now, weirdly, extremely beautiful to me.
I was 17 during these great hits, and I remember every single word to every one of them, nice hearing them all again, but what was weird was listening to hits from the 70s when i was 17! i just love all music!
the flame - one more try - sweet child of mine - love bites - got my mind set on you - dirty diana - need you tonight... where has all the good music gone? *sigh*
@electrictroy2010 I'm not sure why you consider anything a "flaw"... I used a common version of the song, which is played in the music video. Nowhere do I claim to use the single or radio edit version of every #1 hit song ;) Just enjoy the video for what it is, not what it isn't :)
@idolwatcher0 Sorry. I'm just not used to hearing the album versions. I grew-up with the radio edits, which are often drastically different from the album
i didnt listen to many of these bands in the 80's cause 80% of them didnt play an instrument. mostly the african american bands. but no matter how good they sounded it wasn't fair to the artists who worked harder to learn to play rather than have a studio spit it out for them. it is really bad nowa days. every rap song is fake ass shit. and pop,r/b. come on where is the real music? im so sick of these fake ass bands putting out junk.

@Bucs211 Well , i'm sorry , this is technically the year I was born. No one has to give a f****. But , I wouldn't care if you said ``This is the year I was born'' let's say in 1984. That may not be the year , but still...I don't see the harm. We just have pride the year we were born in , and i have to say being born in 88 was pretty cool. The music wasn't the best that year , but women wore their hair big back then , and that was hot!!!
Have you ever felt God created a song just for you - that you appreciated it more in a certain way that no other could? I feel that way about "Loving the Alien" by David Bowie and "Young Lions" by Adrian Belew - both about the message or scene at the foot of the cross.
@RichieD814 Rick really did have two #1 songs in 1988. This information is easily verifiable with some quick online research ;) I would never waste my time making a #1 songs montage that was inaccurate, or just to play some joke on people.

@RichieD814 Normally I just delete the "Rick-Rolled" comments that I see, because when you've seen the same comment posted 100+ times, it's just not funny anymore and there's no originality to it. And I think in an offhanded way, it insults the real purpose, and the work behind this video. Hope you understand. :)
@tigran1960 nope :) When someone comments on a video just to be funny, then at the very least, they better make sure that they're comments are original and in good taste, because otherwise, what's the point? You'll just end up looking like 100+ other posters who made the same exact comment already. :P
@idolwatcher0 Rickrolling is an Internet meme involving the music video for the 1987 Rick Astley song "Never Gonna Give You Up". The meme is a bait and switch; a person provides a hyperlink seemingly relevant to the topic at hand, but actually leads to Astley's video. Persons led to the music video are said to have been rickrolled. I think all those people weren't joking, just relieved that they weren't pranked when they found your video.

Maybe i'm just getting old but EVERY song on this complilation is legendary and it seems like almost every song these days is just forgettable.
@samprofit1 I agree man. These songs are almost 25 years old but they're unforgettable. Nobody will remember today's garbage 25 months from now. Just look at the LEGENDS on this list; Whitney Houston Michael Jackson George Harrison George Michael Steve Winwood Guns n' Roses Def Leppard Phil Collins Beach Boys Bon Jovi Chicago Poison All of these artists are hall of famers or will be HOF'ers one day Not to mention, Marx, Ocean, Estefan. You don't see talent like this anymore
@GialloHorror I AGREE WITH YOU. AND I BELIEVE WE ARE NOT BEING NOSTALGIC HERE. IT´S A FACT THAT 80S SONGS AND VIDS, AND 90S TOO, ARE ABSOLUTELY BETTER THAN THE CRAP THEY PLAY NOW, MTV?? IT´S A JOKE.
Richard Marx is one of the most underrated musicians ever. Not only did the dude have a string of HUGE hits in the late 80's and early 90's he's one hell of a songwriter as well.
If anyone would have told me that George Harrison, Michael Hutchinson and Michael Jackson would all be deceased i would have thought you were crazy......
@nexdog debbie was hotter well shes pretty sexy now also if u see her now these days tiffany was pretty damn sexy tho with that red hair lookin like one of them sexy girls from the mall lol
I can't Thank You enough for your answer here, I have been searching for that song "Common Ground " for years, and have spent untold hours doing web searches for it. For some reason I thought it was " Hallowed" instead of " Common Ground ". You wouldn't happen to remember a song that Richard Burton did a spoken intro to would you ? I always thought it was "Worlds Away " by Planet P, but I can't find anything on it anywhere. Thank You once again, you made my day !!!

I remember 1988 very well. I wish I could go back.. I was just a kid that year btwn the ages of 8 and 10.The 80's were my childhood years and I have fond memories. They were so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
These were the days when music had meaning, and they didn't have to sing about a woman's physique, nasty languages or money to get attention. Just perfect words on how to love or be loved
@Baybeeh91 just try to remember one line from this song, then type that line into a search engine with the word 'lyrics' and it should bring it up. e.g this could be heaven or this could be hell lyrics..... search
Seriously -- Faith was a great album. I was looking through some old CDs the other day... ran across The Joshua Tree. In the mood to hear "With Or Without You", "Where The Streets Have No Name", etc... I opened it up and on top of The Joshua Tree, lo and behold, was Faith.
That surely is one blessed CD case, with probably two of the top albums of the decade! What a pleasant surprise!
Hmmm...I didn't see POUR SOME SUGAR ON ME by Def Leppard. Wasn't that a number one song? It sure was all over the airwaves that year and played almost every hour! LOL
@jdomrey You are right "Pour Some Sugar on Me" did reach #2 on the peak position but held that position for 1 week. I think this is where he/she got confused. I have the book right here in front of me (The Billboard Top 40 Hits 8th edition).
Unless you lived these days yourself, you just don't know how truly awesome the 80's really were. Everything was loud, from the clothes, hair, perfumes, makeup, music, etc...there will never ever be another decade as fun and wild as the 1980's. I must say, 1988 had some of the best music from that decade. Oh to be able to relive those days, if only just for a day.....

You wouldn't have to know the song with the words with "comon ground" in it? it was released sometime in 1988.
application6011 1 year ago
@application6011 Are you talking about "Common Ground" by Rhythm Corps ? Look that up on YouTube and see if that's the song you're talking about :)

@idolwatcher0

These were the days when music had meaning, and they didn't have to sing about a woman's physique, nasty languages or money to get attention. Just perfect words on how to love or be loved

LOL
nazreyes 1 year ago
As Far as I know, "Pour Some Sugar on Me" peaked at number 2!! Excelent song though
jdomrey 1 year ago
