I wish there were more Lipizzaners that were ridden up to levels like this! All we see these days is warmbloods and thoroughbreds. What's happened to our Lippi's? Obviously superior =P
Thanks for posting this, reminds us of the horses that started it all.
This video is a huge source of inspiration for me. Not only is Smokey the grandsire of my Quiana, but this video shows just how much Smokey enjoyed his "job." Smokey was and still is a great ambassador for the Lipizzaner breed--this video is just one example of that! Thanks for posting this Laura!
Thank you for your comments. I love Smokey so very much, and I never stop missing him. It's so comforting to me to know that others appreciate who he was and what he did - - and his offspring.
I have never lived with anyone as long as I did with Smokey - 25 yrs - quarter of a century. Didn't live with my parents, children, or husband that many years. Wow.
So beautiful. Smokey - such a stunning horse. Well ridden, choreographed, and the music is perfect. This serves as an inspiration for me and my Maestoso II Odetta II aka Wild.
This horse has the most beautiful extended trot! He only swished his tail once that I could see-I really think that he enjoys what he is doing! And I love the comment about the Spanish/Lippizzan Horses at Lower levels-
I announce Dressage Shows and rarely see the Spanish or Lipizzanner Horse at any level-
I basically rescued my Lippy a year ago at the urging of my very talented trainer. He was at our barn as a school horse and everyone thought he was a QuarterHorse cross. Everyone loved him but thought he was difficult to ride and not a great jumper. We worked with him and he and I bonded and we found we had a full Lipizzaner schoolmaster! I absolutely love him to death and he has taught me more in one year (with my trainer's help) then in 35 years of riding. I love the Lipizzaners!
Hi lovely video. I'm based in the UK and own a Lippy too. I just wondered if your judges have any prejudices against the Iberian type horse. In the UK most people seem to have a warmblood if they want to concentrate on dressage and I would imagine it takes a judge a few moments to "get their eye" in on this type of horse - even if it is working well.
Yes, judges do -- esp. lower level judges. Lipizzans/Iberian horses have lack of over stride and long, low carriage at lower level competition. At FEI levels, Lipizzans excel and cannot be beaten. Charles DeKnuffy told me in 1985, to keep the Lip at home until it is 4th level.
dont' know about Utube stars..? I have not gotten involved in all that, but I love to watch this ride! What a great story...31 1/2. Does he have any progeny out there competing you know of? Or standing at stud?
This video is so beautiful. 1990 was a long time ago for dressage, I was riding then and know the no. of really well trained horses in the US were few. This is a lovely example of a wonderful pairing. It's amazing how lovely he is to watch, and it makes one wonder why so many people prefer long slender TB dominated bloodlines so much; where the smooth "well oiled" movement this horse exhibits is lacking.
Thank you artsyhorse. Lipizzans - and esp. Smokey - have been bred for 400 yrs to "pair well" with their riders in any endeavor. This ride occurred only 3 mos after Smokey began to learn this level and the freestyle. Amazing.
How can we get Smokey's video rating up to 6 STARS?
Smokey spent a year recovering from punctured fetlock joint, severed suspensory, torn deep flexor tendon, chipped sesamoid with arthroscopic surgeries, stall confinement, etc.
After that, Smokey made a few appearances for benefits and goodwill, but he stayed at home teaching his owner (me) to ride upper level movements and teaching children and beginner dressage riders (for free) about the highest level of communication while riding a horse.
Unfortunately, this was Smokey's last competition, because the following February, a narcoleptic driver flew more than 100 feet off the highway above Smokey's paddock and tore through the fencing. Smokey sustained near fatal injuries (the driver was still sleeping in the car and not injured).

I've got to ask- Did you used to ride at the Dixie Stampede?
flippin1999 3 years ago
Oh, wait-that was Tracy Ross. I used to ride at Dixie and also toured with the Lipizzan Stallions...You've got a wonderful way with your horse! :)

I'm thinking this rider's upperbody, particularly her head, is looking a little spaghetti-noodle. o_O Bouncing all over the place.

Smokey and Jennifer learned Intermediare movements and began competing only 3 months before this ride. Amazing.

This ride was 1990. Smokey left this world Sept 18, 2007 - age 31 1/2.

Was it his left rear leg? He seemed to be favoring it somewhat during this video. He was an absolutely stunning animal.

OMG! I did not know this, Laura. That's terrible that such a wonderful stallion would have his career cut short like that. Sigh.
