Hey, I have a little thing I have been wondering about. Whitch island are you guys playing, I saw at one of the top comment and you sad something about a map pack, where can I find it?
I disagree with the assumption that airspeed is useless in game for emergency landings with auto-rotation. Because without forward movement, your basically dropping like a rock with a small parachute and you have a greater chance of the game deciding "you landed to hard, your going to blow up now."
If you keep your speed up until the end, flaring gives you a bit of lift before you hit the ground which softens your landing, even if you have to slide a few meters before coming to a complete stop.
@GenericAmerican1, you are incorrect insofar as the video is concerned. In ACE, with their method of autorotation (aka: What the video is aimed at), you do not 'drop like a rock' without forward movement, nor do you have a chance of the game deciding to blow you up for 'landing too hard'. It's just not how ACE works. The training is geared towards ACE. You can disagree, but you would be wrong to do so, as that's simply not how it works.
@Dslyecxi I use ACE, my comment that it 'drops like a rock' is a bit of an overstatement. But i always found that landing going straight down has a greater chance for the game to decide to kill you, either through destroying the chopper or just the crew.
Maybe it's just personal preference for me to keep moving, after all if something took your engine out, it probably won't stop shooting just because of that. Throttle down, nose forward, level out, throttle up and flare.
@GenericAmerican1 The problem with your assumption is its based on actual Physics, which arma does not simulate very well, infact its extreamly hard to autorotate in vanilla arma, pretty much if you touch the ground with the engine off from above 15-20m it just drops and explodes, while in ace (a mod for the game) they're trying to simulate autorotation (which none of the dev's seems to understand basic flight or anything to do with aircraft let alone the physics of flight)
@SirScarecr0w I only recently started using ACE, and it makes auto rotation stupidly easy, and I could do it reliably in vanilla arma anyway. But I still prefer to keep forward speed up, so I can land as far as possible from people trying to kill me.
@GenericAmerican1 yea good point, though wtih vanilla you take a hit to the tail and you drop and blow, at least with ace it kinda lowers the damage taken to simulate a 'crash' and take injury when you taek a hit and drop 10-15m
How big are these maps? Or is it just one huge map with different landscapes?
I'm a Battlefield player but I'm more into realism so I'm considering this game. It's just the maps in Battlefield are generally very small and you just have to go round and round when in an airplane or a fast helicopter.
@Sajmonwins, the maps can be several hundred square kilometers in size each. Our current map pack has about 30 terrains ranging in size from 25km2 to 400km2 and more.
Forward airspeed in real life is to keep the rotor RPM up. Think about autogyros. They fly based upon forward airspeed that keeps the rotor RPM to an acceptable level. It has to do with Venturi effect I believe. I'd have to look it up, but there is a reason.
@Icarus716, yes, but it's completely irrelevant in A2+ACE, which is what I said. It's pointless to teach a real technique when the game doesn't care about how it really works.
@Dslyecxi Oh, no I wasn't trying to correct you, just trying to share some knowledge to you. That way if someone asks, you can let them know why. I love your videos. ArmA is legit. Period.
@Dslyecxi Amen to that, I hold a non commercial helicopter cert. and have found that applying the stuff I learned at REAL helicopter training will not be helpful AT ALL in Arma2!
Getting tired of people who can not see the difference between the real world and a computer game.
Arma2 also does not have basic things like the collective, instead you use RPM to change altitude.
@Welsh1970, an Apache video would differ only in very basic areas, aside from that it'd also include Hellfire usage. I doubt I'd do that. IFV or armor, perhaps.
@MarcinP2, not proximity-based like ACE models it. If you listen to that segment again, I acknowledge the real-world self destruct and then talk about how ACE has some bizarre proximity airburst 'feature'.
@Dslyecxi How did you cut the engines? was it just a trigger/script linked to your radio or something?
