I like the RA games for the arcade action, but the X-WING and TIE FIGHTER games were great for space-sim fighter combat. I still play RA2 on my PS2 from time to time.

man this game, the first training missions were MURDER for me, yet once I got to this stage everything was a cakewalk, until that stupid mission on Hoth where you walk around and get shot by stormtroopers >_<

hahaa I remember when this game came out and we were like "WHOA YOU'LL NEED A CD DRIVE TO EVEN PLAY THIS DUDE LIKE WTF DUDE WHOOO" and the graphics seemed out-of-this-world amazing, like this is it, this is the peak of video gaming. The game was actually pretty hard if you played with one of those crappy and sloppy 80s 90s PC joysticks :P

Somehow the creators of Star Wars and Star Trek games appear to be great at audio alerting the player of events happening once they already happened. Like "take a sharp left" after one has passed the curve

Haha, I can't believe I used to play this and the second one using the keyboard. I could beat the flying levels but the shooting levels were a nightmare. All those people saying he needs to aim have obviously never played either of these. Twitchiest fucking games ever.

It's more than a rail shooter, it's a FMV shooter. Not only are you unable to fly where you want, all the backgrounds are just FMV that never changes.

There were lots of FMV (full motion video) games of all kinds over the years. It was most popular from 1993-1995.

There was a Rebel Assault 2 of course, but there were other very similar titles back then too. Having trouble remembering many of them... CDi had a bunch of them, Sega CD and 3D0 had some others, PC got most of em...

MegaRace was a racing game that used similar concepts, and I enjoyed that one. Rebel Assault was one of the better action FMV games...

I have just checked out some MegaRace videos, and this looks really interesting. Mainly because you see that the whole game is a scripted sequence, in which you just have to move around, and can influence only some parts of it. It's a pitty that this genre is dead, I could imagine a whole lot of great on the Wii, using the motion control, which is imo better than the mous/keyboard combination.

I do wish there were more shooters like Rebel Assault in general. However, I feel like the real time 3D variants, like Rouge Squadron II on Gamecube were the peak of the genre. RS2 on Gamecube often looks even better than the original Star Wars movies with the dynamic lighting effects. Unfortunately there haven't been many games like that in recent years.

As far as FMV games, their spirit lives on. Many games today seamlessly combine FMV and real time 3d segments, such as the upcoming FF13.

I can't believe this game is almost FIFTEEN years old! 15 years before 1994 the closest thing I had to a video game was Coleco Telstar (Pong with more options).
