it happend to me a few times that my rear wheel was loosing grip like this but it wasnt that violent like in this video and all i did was back of from the throttle but i didnt shut it off completely maybe half way and i picked up the bike a bit while doing that but i dont know if this is the right thing to do but it worked for some reason
no this was the wrong thing to do, u were lucky. high sides occur from the rear tire spinning & the back end losing grip while the suspension is loaded, then once the rear tire gains grip either on its own or when you let off the throttle the suspension snaps back and this is what throws you off and creates the high side. MSF says to either ride out the skid until the bike regains its own grip w/o the high side, or low side it on purpose. Injuries are not as bad on a low side compared to high
Don't snap the throttle shut or you make it worse... other than that you just pull a silly face inside your helmet and hope you don't fall off and tear your petticoat!
no, when he came out the corner he applied too much throttle lost the back end try to save it by dropping the throttle, the rear end gets grip back but his momentum is carrying him the other way so off he goes.
MASSIVE! I highsided on cold tires on the street a coupe of weeks ago. I remember as I was sliding, "no prob, just ease off the throttle a tad..." SV's have a Throttle Positiion sensor that completely closes the throttle at about 1/8th open. Sweet. I had been meaning to adjust it. Now I'm recovering from clavicle surgery. I don't remeber hitting the ground, but I'm thinking it was horrible. Wish I had a video of it. 25 years I've been waiting to do that...
i just highsided last week (06 r6). I had been waiting 3 years for that.. when it happened i was completely shocked, i lost sleep for many nights trying to figure out what i did wrong. come to find out this thing happens all the time, to the best of us.. one tip i've learned, stay on the gas and ride it into the ground.. will do.
Seriously though, high sides are every bikers' worst nightmare. When the back end begins to slide into a corner DO NOT CLOSE THE THROTTLE SUDDENLY! The rear wheel will suddenly regain traction and as it is pointing in a different direction to the direction the bike is travelling, it will straighten up very quickly, throwing you off in the process.
If your rear wheel begins to slide too much into a corner, keep the revs constant and SLOWLY decrease if need be as the bike straightens up. If you cannot stop the slide it's best to low side it. If you're wearing appropriate clothing you have a very good chance of coming out of it unscathed. How do I know? I low sided off a Gixxer 600 at 70kmph+{45mph}(ok so not that fast but try it yourself and you'll see it's plenty fast when you're not on the bike anymore!). 50 metre slide/tumble and only
cont - and only injury was a sprained ankle. If I had not been wearing leathers, particularly leather pants, I would now be having skin grafts to replace the 5 pounds of gore mashed into the asphalt. Always wear the best protective gear possible! Protective pants(leather/textile and armour) are even more important than a jacket.
"If you're wearing appropriate clothing you have a very good chance of coming out of it unscathed" - Obviously I mean if you are not run over by another vehicle! Wear bright helmet, clothing etc. Make sure other vehicles can see you. I wear an orange workman's vest over my jacket. I have two helmets: white and fluro orange. You may look better all in black but it's better to stay alive right?
ye if you had wheelspined with less throttle you may of saved it but ouch dude, i love commin out of the basin but always scares me, i thought where you came off is just limestone underneath? is that where battista crashed?
did you ever screw up! your suspension must be wayyy out of whack or tire pressure or something, usually at speeds like that you can "save" a highside as you feel it coming on and the "g" force holds it back just long enough to react... maybe you are slow to react? I dunno but nice video!
No excuses here mate, i screwed up hardcore. Second session and 2nd lap in, that turn had a slight over crest as well. Couple that with some overzealous throttle and there you have it. Suspension was stock, but ive never had a bike step out on me that badly before, by the time i realised i was crossed up, i was VERY crossed up.
