Wonderful song, fine singer. Growing up my mom played Jack, Nat King Cole, Sinatra...I just loved it. I remember seeing this when JJ first sung it on the Tonight Show and I was just floored. He had to have been in his 50's, and he could still belt it out.
I once met Jack Jones on Catalina Island back in "81" and what a gentleman he was and is. As I recognized him, he came over an spoke with me for a few minutes and then as he was leaving the restaraunt he knocked on the window outside and waved a good-by.
He is very handsome and down to earth.
Something that I never expected from someone with so much exposure.
Real class!
Jack, wherever you are, you found a place in my heart. May God bless you!
always loved his voice ! then heard his version of "Mack The Knife". wanted to hate it(Bobby Darin's version is classic) but the more I listened the more I realized what a vocal genius he is! thanks for the music !!!
Ah, those were the days when a singer knew how to interpret lyrics. The phrasing is perfect. Claude Debussy once noted that "The music is the silence between the notes." Jones not only hits the notes, he knows the exact phrasing. He also sings as if he understands the lyrics not just having had memorized the words.
He sang this song at the Suncoast in Las Vegas. I never heard it before then, not it is my favorite song by him. Love With A Proper Stranger is another of my favorites
Thank God for Youtube.. as we'd never get to see wonderful entertainers like jack Jones. Great to see him again. I'd luv to see the video of him singing 'Call Me Irresponsible'
Alvin, you are so wrong about this song! As I listen to the words, I'm transported back to when I was a kid, & played guitar & sang for relatives & friends. Now, I perform in restaurants & still get a thrill when people applaud & enjoy my music. That's what J.Jones is singing about.
I want to cry. When I was small, my dad had hundreds of Jack Jones' albums and used to listen to him a lot. Jack, you brought so much joy to our house with your music! Thank you!
jack jones voice is as fine as anyone..of any era, his range, phrasing, longevity of breadth control and notes...seen him about fifteen times in person, he belongs up there with frank and sammy....incredible talent
Nice clip. I remember this from the tonight show and him talking of his Dad's influence. Just caught him on this year's Labor Day telethon. Was the best part of it and a nice gift in the day. I'd love to get a version of his "So, Here's to Life" that he did on there. Good arrangement. Great song.
Jack Jones is one of the greatest singers ever and this is a great example...awesome to this day in concert, this singing legend is one not to miss!!! Bravo Jack and please come to LA...The Pantages you could take by storm!!!
Jack Jones is the best ballad singer of all-time. His voice is amazing, and he sings with great emotion. I think his voice is better than Sinatra's, Bennett's or Torme's. He has always been underated and it is a shame many people only know him for his vocals on "The Leve Baot" theme. I have seen him in concert several times. He puts on a great show!
Alvinbreck...i am also a singer, and have been so all my life, and therefore know a bit about the craft, and this man has it all, he is a singers, singer, no one can hold a note like he can, you may not like the song, but the singer is technically something else.
Hugoforth...I get what you are saying. And what I'm saying is that all of you Jack Jones fans know what a great singer he is. But there are far more people in the world who may only vaguely know of him for singing the theme to "The Love Boat." It's for this reason that I think the person who uploaded this video put it up here because they thought this clip was extremely funny, in an unintentional way. Jack Jones singing an idiotic song about being a singer is just way too ironic.
Alvin, it seems that you're just about the only one who thinks this video of Jack singing "I Am A Singer' is a big joke! So I guess you're the one who's nuts. Hilariously awful? Wow! Well, I don't think your opinion is very valued here. Matter of fact, your assessment is Hilariously Awful, and way off the mark! And Jack is not vaguely known, his world wide concerts are packed sell outs, and his albums are still selling.
It's fine to disagree with me. But if I think "I Am a Singer" is a very funny bad song, I'm entitled to that opinion. Have you taken a look at what other videos were uploaded by the person who uploaded this one? It's completely obvious that they think this is funny too. Chris Elliot, Andy Kaufman, The Residents, BJ Snowden, and Morton Downey Jr. are not exactly a selection of well known ballad singers, or good singers at all.
It seems you mind if I disagree. You're entitled to your opinion, definitely, but so am I. It looks as if you take it as a personal matter, the fact that many of us here appreciate Jones talent. You referred to us as "nuts". Why should it matter so much to you that we enjoy and admire Jack? We are not calling down those who you admire, not posting comments to disparage the other intertainers you mention. Your opinion is just that, opinion, don't state it as fact.
If you carefully read what I have said about this, I never said that Jack Jones wasn't a good singer. In fact I even said he was a fine singer. It's the song that I find funny, because it's so schlocky.
Ok, Alvin, can we agree to disagree, in a friendly way? Now, what is schlocky ? Does it equate with corny? Maybe it's a generation gap, but I think the song is apropos, and it lends itself to Jack's voice so wonderfully. And I have to say that I enjoy the discussion!
Are you people a bit nuts? Sure, Jack Jones is a very good singer, I'll give you that. But this particular song is hilariously awful. It makes "I Write The Songs" sound humble and brilliant.
This video is fabulous. Jones is not one of the greats, he is the greatest. Saw him recently in concert, and he's still wonderful, his voice is a most well tuned instrument. It's obvious that this "Singer" strives for perfection endlessly!
Saw him perform this song in Vegas, and he was marvelous. I always relate this song to him. If you ever get the chance to see him, do it, you won't regret it!

Is his nose tilted 45 degrees to the left ..or is that just the video? It's okay, sorta gives him that Robert Redford effect.
