Paul and Gilbert share a similar vocal quality excepting Paul's greater range when he is whooping and soaring. They also share a melancholy in many of their songs although Paul's melancholy is not on display here, Gilbert's is; good job on the video.
I loved this. You did a fantastic job of putting this together. I love both, Paul and Gilbert and the creativity you put into this was nothing short of fabulous. Thanks for posting this.
I'm so sorry Uncle Mohawk3881, but surely the first part of this recording actually comes from a track Gilbert did with Peggy Lee called "Can't think straight".
@1066nemo Well spotted Uncle Nemo - the first 30 seconds ( orchestral intro and ringing phone ) are from that song , but Gilbert fans already know that !
ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS....to bad Gilbert hasnt been knighted as Paul has...Gilbert has earned it as well...great songwriting, singing, and it comes from the heart.
im not sure i get it it sounds to me there are segments from at least 4 or 5 songs in it that all have a unique quality, are they all to be found on the box or just the one track? i never heard such an interesting gilbert o sullivan before at all. i really put an interest on this. ty
@typosol They are all from ONE track . It`s like the Beatles song `A DAY IN THE LIFE ` or Billy Joel`s SCENES FROM AN ITALIAN RESTAURANT . Different melodies cleverly joined together - all with the same theme ( getting older ) . It`s one of Gilbert`s best ever musical pieces - but not very well known .
what is the name of the album? those tracks are fantastic. i only found middle age dread on a box as one single track. i cant find the album anywhere...
@typosol` Middle age dread ` is actually one six minute track made up of the segments heard here ( in between the McCartney track ) . It`s only available on Gilbert`s box set called CARICATURE .
@eberthbruce The parts sung by Paul are written by him ( a piece called `Uncle Albert / Admiral Halsey ) and the parts sung by Gilbert are written by him - all from a piece called ` Middle Age Dread ` .
Gilbert is a talented fellow, but I don't know of any beatles fans who would think he should have been a Beatle. Seeing as McCartney was in the group anyway, he wrote enough of these songs (pretty much inventing the style) and was much more consistent at writing than O'Sullivan, with plenty of his songs being given to other artists as there was not enough room for them all on Beatles records.
@FabFM Iwould agree with most of what you say . Personally I don`t think he would have fitted in with the Beatles - he likes to work alone and possibly would find collaberating difficult . The only thing I would disagree on is his consistency . Anyone who has stuck with Gilbert will know he has never stopped writing and releasing albums of great quality to this day . it`s just that he`s much more low profile now and doesn`t get the attention he deserves .No doubt the comparisons will continue !
@mohawk3881 I've heard many of GOS albums over the years and disagree that he has continued to keep the same quality up. I am a fan of his music, but do not like songs just because they are by him.
@FabFM Neither do I . His recent album Gilbertville is as good as anyhting he did in the Seventies . The track about 9/11 `All they wanted to say ` is the equal of ANYTHING he has ever wtitten or recorded . That`s not just my opinion but also all the critics who have reviewed the album .
@MJPKENT Thanks - they really should do something together before it`s too late. A musical maybe ? Elton John has made a success in that area collaborating with people like Tim Rice. Gilbert seems to prefer to work alone but Paul is more open -minded . We can only hope !
@birdman404 Mary wasn`t there this time - just Uncle Albert ! Yes it was a great series - still just as funny when you watch it today . They did actually use the Paul McCartney song in one of the episodes - all the fans will remember that scene.
aha, that's why Paul is singing Ooh MACCA DOO MACCA DAY at the RAYal Gilbert Hall...yoooyooyooyooooo...:-) Nice one Mo, very funny! Oh and the kettle is boiling...
@RAYalized Hi Nicole - I`m not sure if people will like this or not - it was just a crazy idea I had because of all the Paul McCartney comparisons. Do you know the tv show `Only fools and horses `? It`s one of the biggest comedy shows here ever ! I love all the Doooooooooo`s around 2;30 - Is that Paul or Stevie Riks ? lol

The Gilbert O'Sullivan bits make me think of Dexter's reactions to his own ageing in David Nicholls' novel 'One Day'.
