    That would be quite interesting.

  • huh huh mr phallic! that makes me want to kill my dad....

  • x is for xylophone...up the arse!

  • We have but one brain and we use this for everything we think, do, feel and dream. So sex has to be mixed up in everything human. It's also not a stretch to conclude that our first love object has to be the woman who bore us, since we are effectively merged with her psychologically until we begin to form a self identity. Finally, it is hard to deny that the vast majority of our mental/emotional processes operate at a level outside of our consciousness... which is akin to a computer monitor.

  • for how powerfull sex is i sure there is more to it then that

  • why do idiots flag things as inappropriate? why is there even an option to flag things as inappropriate?

  • projecting?

  • dont psychoanalyze me!

  • how does that make you feel?

  • I recommend reading the interpretation of dreams

  • The mind does NOT work according to scientific laws. Scientific laws are an invention of the human mind (and, therefore, not vice versa). Sex is NOT absolutely fundamental. Sex is constructed from different elements of the mind, brain, and body. Sex is, therefore, a construct and NOT something fundamental.

  • sex not fundamental? where did you come from then my love?

  • I'm not using the word fundamental as a synonym for 'important'. I'm not saying sex is not important. It is. I am saying that sex is not FUNDAMENTAL (not shouting it's just you can't italicise in these comments). Fundamental means underneath, it means the lowest level, the level on which everything else rests. Sex is constructed by the body and mind from fundamental components (one of which is the libido). So, as important as sex may be, it is not fundamental, in my opinion.

  • @ 1thousandways- Well, if you view us from an evolutionary standpoint then sex is what its all about, isn't it? Biologically you are here JUST to reproduce...

  • @object000 ... With respect you haven't properly read what I've written. I said sex is 'important'; which is not the same as fundamental. Secondly who's to say we should primarily be viewed as biological entities? Thirdly; from an evolutionary standpoint we are driven to reproduce - as you said - but sex and procreation are not one and the same thing.

  • Oh, I agree. Sex is important, but I'd also say its biologically fundamental to our species. Our ansestors were doing it before we were even mamals...

On the second point I'd also agree- our genes (biology) are being left behind by our memes, and will probably be mostly under their controll, if not abandoned at some point...

Third- for humans? Obviously birth and raising young are key parts of it, but ... untill recently it was the only option...

  • On the whole, a basic sex drives is biologically fundamental. But that doesn't mean that everyone has to reproduce, or that everyone must want to reproduce.

It is still complex a matter, which is getting more complex.

  • @soccom8341576 Of course people don't have to reproduce. Thats just one way in which the memes are beating the genes- our culture is overriding our genetic drives... : )

  • @object000

Basically humans have greater control over their sex drives than other animals.

Memes would account for a great number of these cases.

  • A funny and irreverent video, but at least it gets right that Freud's influence is immense, and compelling overall if not in all its details. (And compelling in many details too!) And hippotoast is quite correct about studies supporting the effectiveness of psychoanalysis. See articles by Falk Leichsenring and others.

  • 1:32

  • Say what you will about his theories., at least snorted like a machine.

  • these programmes are fantastic, an excellent introduction to various historical subjects. Id love to see mr steel do another series, and it should be given a more prime time slot

  • fucking halarious...

  • I'd try Omid Djalili. He has a funny face, you'll love it.

  • Freud is the single most <important analyst. but his overall studies have proven to be wrong. He developed complex psychological studies, yet he simplified humans by sexuality.

  • Freud's theories have never been disproved, it goes without saying that such a complex and unquantifiable entity which is the human mind is impossible to definitively define or analyse. In terms of therapy Freud's methods are supported by empirical evidence.

  • Freudian therapy is difficult to test actually. What with being extremely long and expensive. Cognitive-behavioural or just behavioural therapy are considered the best supported at the moment I believe.

Also, Freud's theories have "never been disproved" because many of them are unfalsifiable.

"You want to sleep with your mother"

    "No I don't"

"Ah, but it's in your subconscious!"

    "No... I don't think so, I looked"

"But you're not looking deep enough!"

    Etc etc.

  • @Okaruwazashi I know you posted this comment a year ago, but the Humanist perspective of psychology is actually the best in treating people. Noam Chomsky proved this in the 1950's, much to the annoyance of Skinner, the champion of behaviourism.

  • Quite a memorable scene from 'The Singing Detective' here.

I remember seeing it more than 20 years ago.

A boy witnessing his mother having sex with his father's best friend in the forest; cross-cut with a rather disturbing scene of the same boy -- now a hospitalized middle-aged man -- witnessing an old man dying in his bed.

  • Third Man parody there.

  • Yes. Nice. I like that song, but is it because of the movie because it's not the kind of music I'm into usually.

  • Many thanks for this - it's helped my students a lot

  • Thank you so much for uploading this :D

  • Is there anywhere on YouTube where you *don't* go, WarningDontReadThis? Not that I'm complaining, it gives the place a sense of continuity ;D

  • It is one of my many talents.

  • I shudder to think what the others might be.

Though I suppose it may have a little to do with the fact that we browse the same sort of comedy, but that just makes it sound less exciting.

  • I must be the stalker of the stalker then.. Sorry 0m!

  • Oh, I'm honoured! Perhaps you too will be stalked and the chain will go on forever, and ever.

  • Until eventually the entire world is unknowingly stalking eachother... except for one paranoid man, who'll be stalked by nobody.
