Explanation: While the books explain how Johnson survived the flood (He has a certain disease that causes immunity.) they actually don't say anything about how he escaped Halo. He actually meets masterchief later on. He was aboard a pelican out floating in space when chief found him. He never really esplains how he made it off the ring seeing this legendary ending. My guesses is that that wasn't Johnson, that was just some other black marine.
