I travel to Huatulco every year for a few months and its safer than my hometown in canada. I can walk the streets at any hour of the night and not have to worry about a thing.

It is a shame that Mexico seems to be singled out by the media for the drug problems. We have drug problems here in Scotland , gangs, murders, but the majority of people never see that side of the country. Every government needs to try and sort it out to help tourists feel more secure and safe.

I was in Cancun in the spring of this year. It is isolated from the areas where there is trouble. In fact I went 100 miles into the Yucatan to see Mayan ruins of Chechin Izta and there was no problems. Cancun is very safe and beautiful.

My family and I just got home from Cancun. It was wonderful. This was our 3rd trip there. We stayed at the Omni hotel but we took the bus and went to local shops. No problems at all everyone was super friendly. We'll be going back.

I think a major thing to consider here is the pure severity. I live in the Vancouver area, and not only have I never seen a gun, but I have never heard of truckloads of people with rifles patrolling the streets in Canada. I have seen a lot of footage out of Mexico, specifically about drug cartels, and Canada`s brand of gang does not come close to measuring up to those cartels. Yes there is murder, there is everywhere like you say, but nothing like warring drug cartels in Mexico, there it IS war.
@ifritto Consider that the footage u see on the news are the more dramatic of the situation, u could see those military trucks in conflictive zones, mainly on the border. So you have to be careful on those areas, with a fast search u can locate them. Is not that the entire population is on arms or seized on our houses. I don't deny that in the past 5 years those areas have become a lot more violent. So u could be shot in an alley of NY or in an alley in other place, use ur criminal mind.

It is a shame that Mexico seems to be singled out by the media for the drug problems. We have drug problems here in Scotland , gangs, murders, but the majority of people never see that side of the country. Every government needs to try and sort it out to help tourists feel more secure and safe.

I was in Cancun in the spring of this year. It is isolated from the areas where there is trouble. In fact I went 100 miles into the Yucatan to see Mayan ruins of Chechin Izta and there was no problems. Cancun is very safe and beautiful.

My family and I just got home from Cancun. It was wonderful. This was our 3rd trip there. We stayed at the Omni hotel but we took the bus and went to local shops. No problems at all everyone was super friendly. We'll be going back.

I think a major thing to consider here is the pure severity. I live in the Vancouver area, and not only have I never seen a gun, but I have never heard of truckloads of people with rifles patrolling the streets in Canada. I have seen a lot of footage out of Mexico, specifically about drug cartels, and Canada`s brand of gang does not come close to measuring up to those cartels. Yes there is murder, there is everywhere like you say, but nothing like warring drug cartels in Mexico, there it IS war.

@ifritto Consider that the footage u see on the news are the more dramatic of the situation, u could see those military trucks in conflictive zones, mainly on the border. So you have to be careful on those areas, with a fast search u can locate them. Is not that the entire population is on arms or seized on our houses. I don't deny that in the past 5 years those areas have become a lot more violent. So u could be shot in an alley of NY or in an alley in other place, use ur criminal mind.

Why no travel warning for Canada? vs a nationally broadcasted one for Mexico? ...weeeeellll, the US Govmn't views the Canadian govmn't as Competent in handling the "situation," whereas for Mexico, the Drug Lords ARE the Govmn't so no one's holding their breath for any Effective Measures to be taken to ensure the safety of our foreign-bound citizens by the "Govmn't" of Mexico, hence a State Issued Travel Warning (rather mild too, if ya ask me)
