in some Biblical passages they refer to the cross as a tree. other literary sources make the same allegory (see: Hitchiker's Guide to the Galax). it could be just that it was a tall wooden thing, probably wasn't an actual tree. so yeah, you're right. they didn't hang Jesus from a tree. however, the allegory is still valid because culture is funky like that.
