Why is Barbossa so obsessed with having the Pearl as his ship?

Wasn't the Peal Jack's ship to begin with, when it was still called the wicked wench? Jack even sold his soul to get his ship back, where does Barbossa's obsession come from? In most scenes he can be seen to be quite a sophisticated character but, as far as the Peal thing goes, he comes across as a brat, or am I missing something?
