Love Townsend, but as a player, he'd need a whole different road map to get around in Vai's world. This was really apparent when I saw the Sex and Religion tour in Vancouver. At one point, Vai literally stood next to Devin and traded licks...using only his fretboard hand. Don't get me wrong, Townsend is a madman, but Vai's a monster.
After this video, Devin hunted down and tried to kill Patrick Stewart, screaming, "I am Shinzon of Remus!!!".
Devin walked a long road from here. . And yes, at this point, Devin could easily run circles around this crap. Devin is a musical genius, if you dont think he could, go look up "wrongside" by Strapping Young Lad. I dont see Vai, or hear him.
@doublebiancu96 Lol freak show excess was about the crazy experimental stuff that vai put in that song including weird time signatures and weird techniques and such.
@angus147258 Steve Vai said in an interview once, about Devin Townsend's guitar playing (I'm paraphrasing): "He's pretty good." Says a lot, coming from Vai.
@angus147258 Devin fans like to think and say that, and although i am a fan myself, sorry...Vai is 2 classes above, plus consider he's older and you really can't beat experience
I usually hate screamo. But this song helped me get through some really, really hard shit through my life. And for that, I thank you, Vai and band. :)
@UnknownSoldiersMusic Do you really think Steve Vai and his band care about some random troll on YT? That's what you have to be.
I don't suppose anyone would label this as screamo - apart from the fact that the only thing this music has in fact with screamo, is that Devin screams now and again, which has been done by blues and jazz musicians before. I don't suppose you'd label them as screamo?
And, of course, when this came out, screamo didn't exist. Hell, hardcore didn't even exist then.
I don't think you really know anything about screamo or hardcore. Hardcore has existed since pretty much 1979 with bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains and Minor Threat. Screamo came into a fold in the '90s with bands like Saetia, Pg.99 and Orchid as a combination of emo and hardcore/power-violence elements.
@riskit256 Hardcore punk came into existence in the 80's, screamo took a few years to spawn from it. So I'll grant you that hardcore existed earlier. Screamo, however, started with bands like Heroin and Angel Hair in the 90's - at the same time S&R was released.
Since S&R was recorded over a period of 18 months, and had to be produced and promoted, Vai must have started writing before the 90's.
You were right about screamo existing when S&R came out, but it didn't influence the writing proces.
@retardedcommandobot Can still be proud of yourself. We can count ourselves as the most observant two people here. We two... of all the people out there.... we two are the ones who caught that moment! HA! To anyone else! :-P
@RushFanPix Right on brother, I guess in this regard we're just genetically superior to the average person. Rejoice for we are two of the chosen few who can look at clouds/smoke/other similar stuff I haven't mentioned and find faces in them!

This album ("Sex and Religion") is absolutely awesome. Steve Vai is one of the best guitarist of all time...that's for sure. But he's also a great composer...all those tracks through this album kickass. Period.
haha its just funny to see old school devin townsend...i first knew him through strapping young lad, then both devin townsend project/band. hes a fuckin madman and an awesome musician.
@gameboy100894 I only wrote he looks like the gimp in pulp fiction.possibly one of the largest innovators of metal in the last 10 years or so? what have you been smoking ? the views haven't even reached 1,000,000.
Vai may have speed. Satch may have melody but Townsend has a gimp suit. lmao.
@therealsystemcrash have you even heard of strapping young lad? that band is still almost impossible to label as towsend mixed thrash, industrial and even a bit of death metal into his music. this song doesn't even show what he can do and its entirely different from anything i've heard from him in strapping or the devin townsend project, dont get me wrong its a good song but its not really what i would say devin is the best at doing.
Oh it took a while for me to enjoy this one. When it came out, I was in the midst of some really dark and destructive crap. And while this was helpful in purging some of that, I had to stay away from it for a long while.
But now... Man, this is just mind-blowing awesome! I love it.

@ssjcell yeah, sorry about that man. You were laying it on pretty thick, it's true. It's hard to tell sometimes because text doesn't really have any inflection. Don't like people insulting my favorite guitarist!
I'd loved this song and video when it came out all those years ago... it still amazes me the way way it did back then...... such aggression and in your face lyrics...... Steve couldn't have picked a better selection of musicians for this album.....
This song is so true, spiritual, agonizing and ecstatic..... a blast of pure energy release..... 5 stars......
They played this on Tonight Show?! Man... That vid would be cool to see... Maybe someone has it on tape somewhere but isn't one of those people who care about converting them to digital format...
Oh man, if someone does, please post it! Devin's like, "Can we scream here?"... then he goes right up into the camera and starts screaming. Aweosme! I can't believe he was only 20. 20 years olds are such gigantic pussies now.
What a video! Fire, a contortionist, TM Stevens, a woman giving birth, guitar tapping, a bald man in a catsuit having arrows fired into him! They just don't make em like this anymore.
This is by far my favorite thing Little Stevie Vai has ever done. I bought that album right after this video came out, and still have it. I consider it essential listening.
This has to be the sickest formation ever, too bad it didn't last longer and that it was soooo misunderstood back then because they probably would've created some amazing stuff together had the Sex and Religion album been a success.
Though Devin would probably go solo sooner than later, but one more VAI album would've been great.
@Fishbowlofdeathnes That lasted for 2 seconds. Vai still hasn't written a good song since David Lee Roth's Eat 'Em & Smile. Ozzy tried working with him but didn't even put out a single song cuz Vai can't write a good rock song. Frank Zappa really fucked him up.
@kennedy78757 blasphemy. steve vai wasnt on ozzmosis because of legal problems with the record company. steve DID write a song on the album but zakk performed it.
@rickyjshiznit Ozzy's own words from the book OZZY TALKING (2002), "I was working with Steve Vai earlier in the year, and while Steve never treated me like anything other than a gentleman and I was fine with him, it felt that maybe I should work with actual songwriters." Ozzy. Dec 1994. OUCH!
@kennedy78757 my words "steve DID write A song on the..." A(this implies 1 incase you don't know) song on the album. hes listed in the credits as a co-writer of my little man. From wikipedia "This is the only song from the collaboration of Ozzy and Steve Vai. However, Vai did not actually play in the recording. All guitars/ electric sitars were played by Zakk Wylde. ...". id like to know what he meant by "actual" songwriters...
@rickyjshiznit He meant someone who writes clasic songs like "Crazy Train," No More Tears," etc. not guys who write things like "Down Deep Into The Pain" that are no more than unmemorable guitar wank fests. Ozzy tried working with Vai for 4 months and all he got was 1 unmemorable song. Vai didn't write a single song on the Whitesnake album he played on, Adrian Vandenberg did. Like I said "Eat 'Em And Smile" was the last time Vai wrote a memorable SONG. HE'S A FAST GUITAR WANKER, NOTHING MORE!
@kennedy78757 First of all, Ozzy isn't songwriter either, besides that Vai is big genius and musician! If Frank Zappa said so, and many people he worked with! No miracle he didn't work with Whitesnake anymore, David C. beeing such a douche-bag and ego-maniac, man has a page for itself on Wiki just for the people he changed in his band. For conclusion, Steve Vai is an artist and you as a mediocre can't say otherwise, just find that he truly is.
This is one of the best thing STeve Vai has even accomplished, although it was under appreciated. T.M. Stevens and Terry Bozzio left the group when the CD came out, that left Steve and Davin tour with two new musicians.
I see a lot of Devin in Maynard James Keenan. Different artists , but similar performance, and energy. This album was not appreciated, even by me when it came out. It's decent, production, and the musicians are stellar, but I never connected with it. ApB
Totally agree Avathron. This album was my first introduction to Devin Townsend, way back in '93. I also love Ocean Machine, strapping young lad and more recentley Terria. Yep, Devin was Awesome before he went in to the metal genre.
This doesn't even make sense. HE was always into the 'metal genre' especially in the beginning and not even as close to as much anymore. Devin has branched way the fuck out and has proven himself to be one of the more versatile artists out there. If anything, this shows him at his weakest, singing someone else's songs in totally unfamiliar territory, held at ransom for a record contract.
Man, what the hell is Devin doing ?? It's almost hard to watch one of the most talented metal musicians ever in a dead-end band like this. Man I HATE music by people like Vai and Satriani ... just a platform for their piddly guitar wanking. Devin's songwriting pisses all over this.
Devin was only 19 when Vai asked him to join his band! Only nineteen years old!! Of course Vai recognized talent when he saw one, but it was his band and his music. He was somewhat control freak that time so every member of the band did what Steve told them to do. But you have to give Devin some credit anyways, that was his spring-board to fame...
well you don't know much about devin townsend if you didn't know that he played with stevie vai before he was doing strapping young lad...
i hope you heard from devin townsend project, devin townsend band, Ocean Machine or Ziltoid...and actually he doesn't only play metal, the other stuff hes doing is as good as the metal stuff...
and yes, you're right, stevie vai, satriani and mainly this video all suck...

Great song! Steve will never ever never ever leave the 80´s. Its not even remotely imaginable...

This has to be the sickest formation ever, too bad it didn't last longer and that it was soooo misunderstood back then because they probably would've created some amazing stuff together had the Sex and Religion album been a success.
Though Devin would probably go solo sooner than later, but one more VAI album would've been great.

yeah, not a great video. Great song, but best bit about it is Dev's singing. He looks like a cenobite! Sex & Religion was a great project though.

Devin, Steve, TM, Terry. Talk about supergroup
Fishbowlofdeathnes 2 years ago 37
@Fishbowlofdeathnes That lasted for 2 seconds. Vai still hasn't written a good song since David Lee Roth's Eat 'Em & Smile. Ozzy tried working with him but didn't even put out a single song cuz Vai can't write a good rock song. Frank Zappa really fucked him up.
kennedy78757 1 year ago
@kennedy78757 blasphemy. steve vai wasnt on ozzmosis because of legal problems with the record company. steve DID write a song on the album but zakk performed it.
rickyjshiznit 1 year ago
@rickyjshiznit Ozzy's own words from the book OZZY TALKING (2002), "I was working with Steve Vai earlier in the year, and while Steve never treated me like anything other than a gentleman and I was fine with him, it felt that maybe I should work with actual songwriters." Ozzy. Dec 1994. OUCH!
kennedy78757 1 year ago
@kennedy78757 my words "steve DID write A song on the..." A(this implies 1 incase you don't know) song on the album. hes listed in the credits as a co-writer of my little man. From wikipedia "This is the only song from the collaboration of Ozzy and Steve Vai. However, Vai did not actually play in the recording. All guitars/ electric sitars were played by Zakk Wylde. ...". id like to know what he meant by "actual" songwriters...
rickyjshiznit 1 year ago
@rickyjshiznit He meant someone who writes clasic songs like "Crazy Train," No More Tears," etc. not guys who write things like "Down Deep Into The Pain" that are no more than unmemorable guitar wank fests. Ozzy tried working with Vai for 4 months and all he got was 1 unmemorable song. Vai didn't write a single song on the Whitesnake album he played on, Adrian Vandenberg did. Like I said "Eat 'Em And Smile" was the last time Vai wrote a memorable SONG. HE'S A FAST GUITAR WANKER, NOTHING MORE!
kennedy78757 1 year ago

ApB

Very weird to see Devin like that

Totally agree Avathron. This album was my first introduction to Devin Townsend, way back in '93. I also love Ocean Machine, strapping young lad and more recentley Terria. Yep, Devin was Awesome before he went in to the metal genre.
mellodge 2 years ago

Devin's songwriting pisses all over this.
splitoperator 2 years ago
Devin was only 19 when Vai asked him to join his band! Only nineteen years old!! Of course Vai recognized talent when he saw one, but it was his band and his music. He was somewhat control freak that time so every member of the band did what Steve told them to do. But you have to give Devin some credit anyways, that was his spring-board to fame...

Sex & Religion stands the test of time, still an exceptional CD after 16 years.

well you don't know much about devin townsend if you didn't know that he played with stevie vai before he was doing strapping young lad...
i hope you heard from devin townsend project, devin townsend band, Ocean Machine or Ziltoid...and actually he doesn't only play metal, the other stuff hes doing is as good as the metal stuff...
and yes, you're right, stevie vai, satriani and mainly this video all suck...
