I've taken every approach to lighting a fire and small fire to large fire is always best.
Yes, the key is to get the flow going in the right direction but please, if you put three massive logs on the bottom they will do nothing but smolder until the coals dry them out and they reach their ignition point.
I'm all for flash warming the flue, but the top down method I cannot recommend.
Pressurize your home and then Work from small fire to big fire. Build a coal bed and then increase size. E
Every time I've started it 'from the top", the kindling burns up and the big pieces don't burn.

If your wood is seasoned it works great with no smoke and no need to reload with larger wood
