ppl were piled ontop of each other stuck in the doorway :*-[ i saw one report of a guy who was UNDER all those ppl and heard them screaming then going quiet one by one as they died burning and unable to move God Bless their souls may they rest in peace <3
My dad was one of the police officers getting people out. Never have I ever been more afraid when my dad had to jump into the fire and grab people to throw them in the snow. He broke his leg when he fell of the stage, but he kept on going. I'm so glad he made it out okay. I can not imagine losing him :(
From so many fire incidents happening all over the world including the one in Bangkok which killed 60 people & another in Russia which killed 110 people, it looks like nightclubs are the altars of human sacrifices to the devil. After all the " fun & enjoyment ", people will need to die as human sacrifices for these nightclubs to appease the devil. If it is not due to indoor fireworks, it is electrical wiring overheating and even arson; nightclubs can be fatal to one's life.
Now when ever I go into a nightclub or crowded building I take a quick look around for the exits. Remember sometimes the best exit is not the most obivious one. Maybe it's backstage or off to the side. In situations like this most people die because they get trapped in the crowd.
My heart goes out to all these people, and their family's.this is the number one worst way to go out, we should all learn from this video,on what to do if we were in that same situation,as we seen that it takes a matter of seconds for a fire to spread ,so act real fast.
To the guy that stated that there was only one person responsible for this.....I am a fire fighter and a project manager for a fire suppression company. All responsibility comes down to the owner due to the fact that it is his or her obligation to ensure the safety of their patrons whether it be sprinklers or to adhere to max occupancy standards for that particular buisness or ensure there are not unsafe actions or equipment. Ultimately it is on the owner.
ONE party is responsible for this, and one only. The State of Rhode Island. The fire inspector saw the foam, the state let them slide on the grandfather clause. Period.
What a terrible tragedy. My condolences to everyone that lost someone special to them. Also my heart goes out to everyone that was injured. One minute you are enjoying the time of your life and the next minute you are fighting for it. I couldn`t imagine what those poor people went through :(
I just noticed I subconsciously clicked on this on the anniversary of 911, a very sad day for this country. RIP to the victims of the RI Station victims and the victims of 911. God bless their families, relatives and friends.
i seen the other club traggic fire on t,v a long time ago ? im not sure where it was but in front of the two open doors were people stuck in a bunch like sardines it was like 50 people jammed stuck togerther trying desperatly to get out but all at onces trying to escape they got stuck at the door the building they were in burn them alive while the camera guy was camcording from outside.
I can remember the day like yesterday, when I got the news at work I jumped on Boston.com and even though it took 5 days to confirm my cousins death I knew he was lost the instant I saw the rubble on the front page.....RIP Derek.
thanks for posting the video one day I'll be able to watch it in full but not yet 7 years and it's too new for me. Peace & love- Zal
This was a sad day! I was young when it happened! My parents knew people and my brothers knew people..everyone knew someone or they knew a person that knew someone..I hope to God this will never happen again!
This is so horrible. Those poor kids.. It bothered me in 2003, and I cry and pray for those that perished and suffered even as I type this in June, 2010.
i lived right down the road from the club. i can remember smelling smoke from INSIDE my house. I remember walking outside and seeing the sky orange in the distance. My friend lost his father that night!!! But God does everyhting for a reason, even if we done understand it. Maybe one day we will!!!! R.I.P
@burntcheesepizza - Even, nine months later, I'm gong to comment and let you know your name "burntcheesepizza" should usher you to the front of the line in Hell. You pathetic child. - I can only hope you are dead now.....
@roguegirl29 If noone has answered you yet,it took less than 5 minutes star to finish to become fully engulfed.A typical fire with common fuels more than doubles in size in a minute, sometimes less.Add that to the fct that uncommon fuels, such as the sound foam that originally caughtfire and the mostly wood structure of an older building with a low ceiling and no sprinklers...and well you have this.
@roguegirl29 from what I could see on the Brian Butler video, it looks like smoke had engulfed the building within less than two minutes, and the entire building was aflame in about 5.
@TheDon7406 Fused together..... how horrific. You could tell from the video. One minute you saw people pilled up at the door, the cameraman went around back, then another minute later that same area was completely engulfed in flames. What a horrible death. I feel so bad for those people and their families.
My friend's sister died in that fire. Remember it all too well. I heard a report about it when I got in my car leaving a friend's house. When I heard it, I figured oh, must've been a kitchen fire but when I got home and every Providence station was covering it I was horrified. 100 people lost their lives. Most if not all people blame Great White.
@Fanik8 It was more of the club's fault. They didn't have a Sprinkler system built in and the walls were flammable foam that wasn't tested for inspection. It's also Great White's fault for using pyrotechnics inside a club. If only it was inspected first.... Then none of this would of happened :(
@mudkiprules4 I agree. The finger pointing was at the Derdarian Bros.(owners) but whenever Rhode Islanders hear the name Great White they think of them like outlaws!!
@Fanik8 That's because a couple days before this Great White nearly burned another club in New Jersey but the Fire Department was able to control it and no one got harmed. Great White is pretty notorious for their pyrotechnic accidents. Rhode Island has the worst fucking luck ever. We're the Kenny of the United States. Always getting killed and screwed over. All because we're the tinniest state :'(
@fleetstreetfilms Thank you, I appreciate that. Sadly the girl's mother was so brokenhearted about it she fell into very poor health and passed away a few years later. Since then the family has reached closure. The worst is behind them now.
@garycalgary I know, they were not soppose to have pyro fire works in thea cuz there wasnt sprinklers set up, and cuz they didnt have a permit......and on top of it they didnt let everynow of all the exits, there were at least 2 or 3 exits and no one knew so every one was heading to the front door, and people were climbing over each other and getting stuck etc!! bless them all tho its horrible!!
Years later, I remember the scene on TV of the horror. I am sad for the ones who were hurt and who died and for their friends and families. It is one of those unimaginable sickening events. So frustrating that time cannot be rewound and with one cautious decision, fix what has been done, but it can not! May all the nice people effected by this tragedy find peace in this life or the next. My heart goes out to all the loved ones. We havent forgotten.
I was going to go that night. I just had shoulder surgery and was in bad pain so i stayed home. i had a terrible dream probably because of my pain and woke to feel that something was wrong and i was deeply depressed. I put the TV on and it was hard to watch. I began to cry and went to my wife who was getting ready for work but she thought i took too much medicine. Fire has touched my life before when my dad was severely burned in a construction accident but this has changed me forever.
When i was a trainee firefighter, we were shown this video. 20 Young lads full of bravado in a lecture theatre,,, we all sat in silence at the end, totally shocked...sympathy to all the family and friends who lost loved ones.,
hi i was doing an sia course today and seen today about how not to manage a club. it really hit home. however he showed me a video from inside the club viewing the disaster in full. do you know where i can v iew this as i wish to educate more regarding fire safety
Were you also shown the fire from Beverly Hills Supper Club( in KY) May 1977? 165 people lost their lives due to poor wiring. I was 16 at the time but remember watching it like it was yesterday. God Bless you and all the real hero's like you that take care of us.
well said. i plan to have a mass said at st marys church in waltham mass. soon, we know time stops after we die, so its never to late. also thers an old 1950s song sung by, jo straford called- ile be seeing you- i think it goes with all who died that night.
I lost my friends in the Station Fire. The events of that evening have changed many lives forever. The desperation of the the trapped individuals, the preserverance of the rescuers, and the continued stregnth of the survivors should serve as a reminder to all of us how extremely fragile and precious life is.
What I have also learned from this tragedy, is that justice cannot be served by dollar amounts. When it comes down to it, how do you replace a life? You can't.
My father is originally from Cranston & his childhood friend lives down the road from The Station; he said that Warwick will never recover & I bet he's right. There have been a lot of U.S. fires with tremendous loss of life (Happyland Nightclub, Coconut Grove, OLA, Beverly Hills Supper Club, Circus, to name a few) & you would think that man had learned from these disasters so as to prevent more but somehow this happened anyway. My sympathy to the families--even though it's 6 years later.
When the fire first started people were trying to exit throught the kitchen and out the kitchen door to the back of the building but a bouncer was stopping them telling them it was for the band only. People were screaming at him that the building was on fire but he refused to listen at first and allow people through. Soon people started pushing right through him . I always wondered what happened to him.
I watched this video earlier this morning. I couldn't sleep afterward. I tossed and turned in my bed, after witnessing this night club go up in flames--after hearing the horrible horrible screams of these unfortunate patrons. They were only out to have a good time. That was it... and this this terrible unspeakable tragedy happened. These people didn't deserve to die like this. I will never ever forget what I just saw and heard.
can only imagine the horrific pain everyone who lost a loved one in this fire must be feeling, even five years later. It never goes away--that sense of deep loss. To those of you who lost a loved one at this club on this terrible night, you have my deepest condolences and my sympathies. Your loved ones won't ever be forgotten.
OMG! They are totally pulling out the bodies that jammed the entrance, there is an awful feeling I have right now in my heart and stomach realizing that! A persons worst nightmare is thinking of theis manner of death and so senseless.
What I am uncertain of, is considering the death of the bands guitarist Ty. The rest of the band was able to exit very quickly after the fire started. What did ty do differntly from the rest of the band?
I was 7 or 8 years old when this happened. I was in Warwick at the time... Still remember the sound of firetrucks racing down post road towards the Night Club on the February evening.
IF the Fire Marshall did his job,no one would have died. Isn't it very strange that now ALOT of RI buisnesses are closed because of fire codes??? The fire WAS an ACCIDENT,The fire marshall signing off was on purposs. How come the Fire Marshall didn't close the Station Night Club for fire codes like they are doing right now to other buisnesses????
I don't understand why the FIRE MARSHALL is not being held for MURDER. HE is the one who signed off saying that this building was safe in case of a fire. That is why we hire these GOV'T officials. Someone is passing the blame and of course the gov't gets away with murder AGAIN.
My understanding of why God allows such tragedy in this world is because He allows the freedom of human choice and behavior.... and therefore the law of causality comes into play..... cause and effect..... human behavior is the cause...and the results of those behaviors are the effect...
For example... that nightclub incident in Rhode Island could very well have been avoided.... but the owner did not want to pay double the price for fire retardent foam... furthermore, there was no sprinkler system that would have prevent this entire tragedy...... and then the band with these crazy pryotechnics... all formed this recipe for disaster. This is the example of cause and effect relationships between human beings...... Human choice and freewill
But none the less... this was a terrible terrible tragedy..... God bless those poor people and their families. RIP. Tomorrow is never gauranteed so try and live each day as if it was your last.
Here's how it went down. The pyrotechnics went off and the drapes caught fire. In 1 minutes the drapes and the ceiling were fully involed with fire. 911 is called. Now, it takes about 30 seconds to get the tones out to the pagers of the fire fighters. Get your clothes on to go takes 30 out the door to your car, 1 minute or more to get to the station. 3 minutes have gone by and your on the fire truck. By this time most of the building is rapidly catching fire.
The fire truck arrives in 2 minutes if your lucky, very quick response time. Now 5 minutes has gone by, and at this time only 2 more people will make it out alive. A firefighter stands at the doorway with an uncharged line waiting to be charged as he watched around 20 people bottleneck at the doorway burn to death. 8 minutes have past and the entire place is fully involved with fire and the next apparatus arrives. 100 people die in 5 minutes. Fire is to be respected, safety is paramount.
Also playing with pyrotechnics (fireworks) is not a good thing. Fireworks and both the promise of a good time when treated right and the danger they pose when handled improperly also need to be respected. And I have sort of a first hand knowledge of that since I had my right hand burned pretty badly by a sparkler when I was only six years old.
thank you captain obvious..please tell me you are retarded...it would explain a lot about your comment...for standing on a guard rail with no coat in 20 degree weather with no image stabilization its not that bad...you try it. oh not to mention PEOPLE WERE DIEING! dude please have some consideration i wasn't going for best picture award.
@olauf1 I'm a news professional in the business since 1995; you did fine and it's amazing you could stand there. I am actually a TV Weather Anchor and I almost lost it when I found out 7 people in Utica, IL died in a tornado after I started doing cut-ins 3 hours before it hit. And I didnt stand there and watch them die either :-( I have to imagine those firefighters were breaking down every few seconds too..I've seen them work to kill a fire while breaking down.. it's VERY sad..
@olauf1 How horrifying it must have been for you to witness this. I commend you for having the foresight to capture this piece of history. Thank you for sharing it with us.
@SteveWard3928 Congratulations, you are the asshole of the century. What an absolutely insensitive comment. There is a bus coming through soon. Be in front of it.
a band was playing inside this club and someone was taping it. as the band came out a firework display occured to pump up the crowd. the video caught it all on camera as the sparks ignited the club almost in less then 3 minutes.. over 100 people died.
I live in Providence, I remember when this happened..... so damn tragic.... it could have been so easily avoided, all thoes poor people, had to suffer because of others stupidity...
Just be sure when you go to a club, know your exits.
If you want to see the real footage, google 'crowd manager training'; several fire marshal offices have free training that incorporates the video (State of MD fire marshal, for instance). This is good training for anyone who works in or owns a club. When you see how fast the fire travels, you don't have much time to save yourself and others in such situations.
I wonder who the fuck took the live video of the fire down! Or who complained? I think other people have a right to see the event unfold and give a blessing on that night. Taking it down or copyrighting it is just another way to make a dollar on this tragic event!
Absolute tragedy. The doors opened the opposite way and it was very dark. They thought they were locked in or stuck. People were being trampled. Bodies on top of bodies right near the door. It was horriffic. The fire spread so quickly due to a flameable foam material used around the club walls & ceilings. It was painful to see the 100 faces posted on TV who perished in the fire. You can only pray the smoke killed them before the trampling and flames. God has them now in his hands. R.I.P
What I'll never understand is why Ty Longley (the drummer for Great White) didn't make it out alive. All of the other Great White members made it out of the nightclub easily, by ducking out a side exit adjacent to the stage. The only thing I can think of was that he must've hesitated or stopped to retrieve personal belongings and became disoriented in the thick smoke.
I read somewhere that Longley did (in fact) make it out of the club safe. Witnesses saw him outside with his bandmates. But get this: he immediately went back inside to try and retrieve his guitar.
I had always thought he must've hesitated before leaving or took too much time trying to gather his personal belongings, and then got disoriented and/or blinded by the smoke. But to go back inside once you're already outside and out of harm's way, is beyond belief.
I was so young when this happened but i remember the following morning like it was yesterday. my mom was screaming yelling for everyone to wake up at nearly 5 am, the station was where my aunt used to go. we called her for nearly 4 hrs straight b4 she answered. she was safe, but her finance died. she was supposed to be there as well, but had work in the morning so couldn't make it. this was a horrible time, i remember all day the news broadcasting the death toll until it reached 100 R.I.P.
What was the address of the Station and is there still a memorial set up there? I am going up to Warwick this week and wanted to pay homage and my respects to the folks who lives were lost?
The address is on Cowesett Rd in West Warwick. 5 years later it is quite an emotional place to see, as I am sure it will always be. RIP to all of our friends. You will always be remembered.
I just gotta say, I remember when this happened, and I still think to myself "How could they not have known it wasnt part of the show!?" The fire's surrounding them, i think thatd be a good time to go for the doors, but by the time they did, it was too late.
That's not the bystander effect, that's just mob mentality. The bystander effect is when people who aren't affected (i.e. bystanders) don't help people. They diffuse responsibility on some archetype of the "best suitable person for this situation" and don't actually confirm if there is one present. They just assume that there is.
What a shame, this thing. I can only imagine the cocoanut grove fire being even worse.
I disagree. I think the bystander effect is very much applicable in this case. If you were standing inside a crowded building and a fire suddenly broke out, you'd find that most people would react according to the reaction of those around them. If no one else flinched or paid attention to the fire, most others would simply assume it was a controlled fire which was somebody else's responsibility to extinguish, and that it did not pose any imminent threat.
@sean2015 I almost think that if everyone there immediately realized it was a real fire, the mad stampede would've been worse and even more would have died. It seems that the people closest to the stage were dazed by the pyro & fire, you can see other people start to point/yell fire/ make for the door as the cameraguy already is (full vid), it justseems like a farther perspective from the stage made the danger more apparent....
@YorksOwn That's very true. I think everybody assumed it was part of the band's routine, and combined with the effects of alcohol it caused initial confusion and hesitation. Plus I think people assumed (naturally) that overhead sprinklers would activate. I mean even if there had been a lousy fire extinguisher (which there wasn't) it could've at least slowed the fire and bought precious time to allow people to escape. So many variables combined to create this tragedy.
@sean2015 From what I read there was a fire extinguisher in the Dart Room, and one of the club employees went to get it immediately after the fire started, but in the 30 seconds or so it took for him to get it and walk back toward the fire, it was already out of control and he knew the fire extinguisher was useless at that point :(
god bless all who were lost in that fire and their familys it should never happen that way great white was told no pyro in the club but they ues them any way they sholud be sued for it
This was a sad day that will never go away in my mind.i lost a neighbor of mine in the fire scott griffith of california he was a guitar player i a band called nitefall.he moved to RI and was not playing in a band anymore.he was raising his daughter and trying to be a good dad. when he heard great white was in town and couldnt resist.he never made it out.god bless him and all the other fans, familys that were affected.i have opened for great white recently here in cal and jack has been affected
Tragic! Did Great White ever publicly apologize or anything? I not a huge follower of Great White these days, however loved them years ago. If there was an apology, does anyone know where I could view it? Sad deal for all involved.
So I hear they are going to get a 100 million settlement, but they are going to calculate what each persons life was worth. If you were 20 and working at burger king, you'd get perhaps $100,000. If you were in your late 20's and had a college degree, you will get several million dollars. That is how the system is. They kill you and then they rate what your life was worth. Pretty cold.
Did they deem those with children to be "worth" more? Or is that just incidental? Pfft, I agree. I think it should be the same across the board. But I would say more for those who had children to support. It just makes sense.
this place used to be called Papa Brillo's. It was a great place to get clams and eggplant grinders. It was in need of alot of work at that time back in the mid to late 70s when we used to go there to eat. I cannot even imagine...the little memorial was incredibly sad and haunting....such a waste
There was also a man who survived under those trapped at the door. He had a few third degree burns on his legs, but otherwise was unscathed. I read his story online. What a miracle!
On the footage that showed it starting, the guy video taped a mob of people trapped in the doorway all on their stomachs trying to swim out when the building flashed over. All of them died but one woman on the bottom of the pile of people, only because the dozen or more bodies on top of her shielded her from the heat. the building was 3 times over it's max capacity and the walls were coated with a rubber foam for sound reduction which as a result, completed engulfed in only a matter of seconds.
it's for comments like these... that I just have to chuckle. either way, they got more then refunds I'm sure. I've seen the footage from inside that shows it starting and the guy with the camera notices right away and is one of the first out. I can only imagine how lucky he must feel.
This is a clear example of poor fire safety and panic. Of the 4 fire exits in the building, only one was used (the entrance everyone walked in from). Remember the old' use the NEAREST exit' in case of emergency. I feel bad for all these lives lost and those distroyed in their families. The owners and organisers of these event should be locked forever for the poor risk assessment of the show, the building, and the emergency procedures
Yea, I was down the street from it when the fire happened. It was quite dramatic to watch, and see it on the news at the same time. One of my best friend's mom was in the fire, luckily she survived.
I will never forget the night, 5 years ago. And I'm sure many wont. I have the privilege of going past the memorial site of the fire, and paying homage to the lost every now and again...
No, they didn't get refunds... just killed, fourth and fifth degree burns, PTSD, homelessness and live on the verge of homelessness. Lots of kids have no parents, parents without kids..lives that will never be the same.. Heartache, pain and grief..
After seeing the video that WPRI filmed, I am really sickened.
and one question that comes to mind is "why didn't more people seem to try and help these poor people stuck in the door?" I see the two police that were there on duty, and one very slim, petite girl. Come on guys? Why didn't more men help out? I'm assuming they were just freaked out, but on the other hand....
.People did what they could. My friend was there helping, but soon the heat was too much to get near the building. Think about it, anyone who could help, did. WTF
OK, you're right. I just don't know then how people stood there and watched these people in the door, burning. At that point, it's time to leave. And I still wonder why it took the firefighters so damn long to get the water going. WTF? I lost friends at this show, and I'm angry. Sorry.
I'm a fire fighter, if you've seen the footage, the building entirely engulfed in less than 30 seconds, the people inside were all ready lost and the ones in the doorway Also were all dead but one woman that survived. in an Event like this, "suppression" of the fire is the least concern and rescue is primary. And although u may think u were helping the fire fighters, the more u do for them the more u get in the way. Let them do their job and less lives will be taken.
Lol I was thinkin that as I saw them before the fire. unfortunately people haven't lightened up about the matters so we're not aloud to laugh about it yet. Watch south park to find out the appropriate ammount of time before something can be funny
Are you high? You definitely could not be a fire fighter. What is funny here, or what could possibly be funny? The survivor at the bottom of the pile was a friend of mine, Mike.. You are insane!
I almost went to this show that night.I live right over the border in mass. and was a fan of Great White.I was Laid -off at the time so I didn't have the money to go.I guess it just wasn't my time.
This just drives home the point, in my opinion, that it is far worse that the media shows this type of thing than nudity, seeing as this has made such an impact on you. And it's not like your parents could have turned the tv off because this footage is still on to this day.. I'm sorry you had to see this
dee snider was on johnny dare this morning talking about the benefit concert, and said that there were other exits in the club, but the doors were chained shut, god bless the families of the victims....
I can't imagine how gruesome it was for the firefighters to have to see what they saw. And how horrible for the people so close to freedom, and then it's taken away from them..
there is a video that shows the actual moment when the pyros when off and the stages catch fire, and people walking out...it was somewhere but i cant find it...anyone knows what i am talking about?
i saw that too, and i have thought for years about the one tall guy at the front pointing for everyone to run to the exits, if he even made it out. how many people were walking or staring, and how many of them wish they had run. it's strange how often even 6 years later i find myself thinking about what it must have been like being trapped inside, what i might have done. it seems others still think of this also, with the number of recent postings here....
god dude, just the though makes me sick to my stomach. i remember that footage, when they were playing, the pyros went off n you could see the ceiling catching fire..and then everyone, walking towards the exit. i have looked and looked and nothing. then i remember a camera outside showing the entrance of the club, the stampede was so bad that no one could get out...remember that?
ppl were piled ontop of each other stuck in the doorway :*-[ i saw one report of a guy who was UNDER all those ppl and heard them screaming then going quiet one by one as they died burning and unable to move God Bless their souls may they rest in peace <3

How long did it take for the fire to engulf the entire building from start to finish?
roguegirl29 1 year ago
@roguegirl29 If noone has answered you yet,it took less than 5 minutes star to finish to become fully engulfed.A typical fire with common fuels more than doubles in size in a minute, sometimes less.Add that to the fct that uncommon fuels, such as the sound foam that originally caughtfire and the mostly wood structure of an older building with a low ceiling and no sprinklers...and well you have this.
CyanoticFuture 1 year ago
@roguegirl29 from what I could see on the Brian Butler video, it looks like smoke had engulfed the building within less than two minutes, and the entire building was aflame in about 5.

Fanik8 2 years ago 18
@Fanik8 It was more of the club's fault. They didn't have a Sprinkler system built in and the walls were flammable foam that wasn't tested for inspection. It's also Great White's fault for using pyrotechnics inside a club. If only it was inspected first.... Then none of this would of happened :(
mudkiprules4 1 year ago
@mudkiprules4 I agree. The finger pointing was at the Derdarian Bros.(owners) but whenever Rhode Islanders hear the name Great White they think of them like outlaws!!
Fanik8 1 year ago
@Fanik8 That's because a couple days before this Great White nearly burned another club in New Jersey but the Fire Department was able to control it and no one got harmed. Great White is pretty notorious for their pyrotechnic accidents. Rhode Island has the worst fucking luck ever. We're the Kenny of the United States. Always getting killed and screwed over. All because we're the tinniest state :'(

You can't.

greendayjonasbro 2 years ago

IF the Fire Marshall did his job,no one would have died. Isn't it very strange that now ALOT of RI buisnesses are closed because of fire codes??? The fire WAS an ACCIDENT,The fire marshall signing off was on purposs. How come the Fire Marshall didn't close the Station Night Club for fire codes like they are doing right now to other buisnesses????
dragonheadstudio 2 years ago 3
I don't understand why the FIRE MARSHALL is not being held for MURDER. HE is the one who signed off saying that this building was safe in case of a fire. That is why we hire these GOV'T officials. Someone is passing the blame and of course the gov't gets away with murder AGAIN.
dragonheadstudio 2 years ago 5
My understanding of why God allows such tragedy in this world is because He allows the freedom of human choice and behavior.... and therefore the law of causality comes into play..... cause and effect..... human behavior is the cause...and the results of those behaviors are the effect...
KBmusic1965 3 years ago
For example... that nightclub incident in Rhode Island could very well have been avoided.... but the owner did not want to pay double the price for fire retardent foam... furthermore, there was no sprinkler system that would have prevent this entire tragedy...... and then the band with these crazy pryotechnics... all formed this recipe for disaster. This is the example of cause and effect relationships between human beings...... Human choice and freewill
KBmusic1965 3 years ago
But none the less... this was a terrible terrible tragedy..... God bless those poor people and their families. RIP. Tomorrow is never gauranteed so try and live each day as if it was your last.
KBmusic1965 3 years ago 2
Here's how it went down. The pyrotechnics went off and the drapes caught fire. In 1 minutes the drapes and the ceiling were fully involed with fire. 911 is called. Now, it takes about 30 seconds to get the tones out to the pagers of the fire fighters. Get your clothes on to go takes 30 out the door to your car, 1 minute or more to get to the station. 3 minutes have gone by and your on the fire truck. By this time most of the building is rapidly catching fire.
freedomfighter252 3 years ago
The fire truck arrives in 2 minutes if your lucky, very quick response time. Now 5 minutes has gone by, and at this time only 2 more people will make it out alive. A firefighter stands at the doorway with an uncharged line waiting to be charged as he watched around 20 people bottleneck at the doorway burn to death. 8 minutes have past and the entire place is fully involved with fire and the next apparatus arrives. 100 people die in 5 minutes. Fire is to be respected, safety is paramount.
freedomfighter252 3 years ago 2
Also playing with pyrotechnics (fireworks) is not a good thing. Fireworks and both the promise of a good time when treated right and the danger they pose when handled improperly also need to be respected. And I have sort of a first hand knowledge of that since I had my right hand burned pretty badly by a sparkler when I was only six years old.

Just be sure when you go to a club, know your exits.
If you want to see the real footage, google 'crowd manager training'; several fire marshal offices have free training that incorporates the video (State of MD fire marshal, for instance). This is good training for anyone who works in or owns a club. When you see how fast the fire travels, you don't have much time to save yourself and others in such situations.

jeremy34769 3 years ago
Absolute tragedy. The doors opened the opposite way and it was very dark. They thought they were locked in or stuck. People were being trampled. Bodies on top of bodies right near the door. It was horriffic. The fire spread so quickly due to a flameable foam material used around the club walls & ceilings. It was painful to see the 100 faces posted on TV who perished in the fire. You can only pray the smoke killed them before the trampling and flames. God has them now in his hands. R.I.P
saveusrecycle 3 years ago
What I'll never understand is why Ty Longley (the drummer for Great White) didn't make it out alive. All of the other Great White members made it out of the nightclub easily, by ducking out a side exit adjacent to the stage. The only thing I can think of was that he must've hesitated or stopped to retrieve personal belongings and became disoriented in the thick smoke.
sean2015 3 years ago
Maybe Ty was just in shock. They said the fire spread very quickly.
saveusrecycle 3 years ago
I read somewhere that Longley did (in fact) make it out of the club safe. Witnesses saw him outside with his bandmates. But get this: he immediately went back inside to try and retrieve his guitar.
I had always thought he must've hesitated before leaving or took too much time trying to gather his personal belongings, and then got disoriented and/or blinded by the smoke. But to go back inside once you're already outside and out of harm's way, is beyond belief.

CWFutureWrestler 3 years ago
That's what's known as the "bystander effect". In public places, people take their cues from others around them.
sean2015 3 years ago
That's not the bystander effect, that's just mob mentality. The bystander effect is when people who aren't affected (i.e. bystanders) don't help people. They diffuse responsibility on some archetype of the "best suitable person for this situation" and don't actually confirm if there is one present. They just assume that there is.
What a shame, this thing. I can only imagine the cocoanut grove fire being even worse.
biglmac 3 years ago
I disagree. I think the bystander effect is very much applicable in this case. If you were standing inside a crowded building and a fire suddenly broke out, you'd find that most people would react according to the reaction of those around them. If no one else flinched or paid attention to the fire, most others would simply assume it was a controlled fire which was somebody else's responsibility to extinguish, and that it did not pose any imminent threat.
sean2015 3 years ago
@sean2015 I almost think that if everyone there immediately realized it was a real fire, the mad stampede would've been worse and even more would have died. It seems that the people closest to the stage were dazed by the pyro & fire, you can see other people start to point/yell fire/ make for the door as the cameraguy already is (full vid), it justseems like a farther perspective from the stage made the danger more apparent....
YorksOwn 5 months ago
@YorksOwn That's very true. I think everybody assumed it was part of the band's routine, and combined with the effects of alcohol it caused initial confusion and hesitation. Plus I think people assumed (naturally) that overhead sprinklers would activate. I mean even if there had been a lousy fire extinguisher (which there wasn't) it could've at least slowed the fire and bought precious time to allow people to escape. So many variables combined to create this tragedy.
sean2015 5 months ago
@sean2015 From what I read there was a fire extinguisher in the Dart Room, and one of the club employees went to get it immediately after the fire started, but in the 30 seconds or so it took for him to get it and walk back toward the fire, it was already out of control and he knew the fire extinguisher was useless at that point :(

Pretty cold.
thegoosebrain 3 years ago
Did they deem those with children to be "worth" more? Or is that just incidental? Pfft, I agree. I think it should be the same across the board. But I would say more for those who had children to support. It just makes sense.

There was also a man who survived under those trapped at the door. He had a few third degree burns on his legs, but otherwise was unscathed. I read his story online. What a miracle!
Renfurrer 3 years ago
On the footage that showed it starting, the guy video taped a mob of people trapped in the doorway all on their stomachs trying to swim out when the building flashed over. All of them died but one woman on the bottom of the pile of people, only because the dozen or more bodies on top of her shielded her from the heat. the building was 3 times over it's max capacity and the walls were coated with a rubber foam for sound reduction which as a result, completed engulfed in only a matter of seconds.
MrHitman 3 years ago
it's for comments like these... that I just have to chuckle. either way, they got more then refunds I'm sure. I've seen the footage from inside that shows it starting and the guy with the camera notices right away and is one of the first out. I can only imagine how lucky he must feel.
MrHitman 3 years ago
This is a clear example of poor fire safety and panic. Of the 4 fire exits in the building, only one was used (the entrance everyone walked in from). Remember the old' use the NEAREST exit' in case of emergency. I feel bad for all these lives lost and those distroyed in their families. The owners and organisers of these event should be locked forever for the poor risk assessment of the show, the building, and the emergency procedures

It wasn't anyone's time. That is called pre-destiny.
If that is true, then a murderer shouldn't go to jail.....because he did nothing wrong...because it was meant to happen.
These people passed into transition because of reasons other than fatalistic ones.

To Guitarkidd42:
This just drives home the point, in my opinion, that it is far worse that the media shows this type of thing than nudity, seeing as this has made such an impact on you. And it's not like your parents could have turned the tv off because this footage is still on to this day.. I'm sorry you had to see this

dee snider was on johnny dare this morning talking about the benefit concert, and said that there were other exits in the club, but the doors were chained shut, god bless the families of the victims....

I can't imagine how gruesome it was for the firefighters to have to see what they saw. And how horrible for the people so close to freedom, and then it's taken away from them..
Bless

there is a video that shows the actual moment when the pyros when off and the stages catch fire, and people walking out...it was somewhere but i cant find it...anyone knows what i am talking about?
elsoda 3 years ago
i saw that too, and i have thought for years about the one tall guy at the front pointing for everyone to run to the exits, if he even made it out. how many people were walking or staring, and how many of them wish they had run. it's strange how often even 6 years later i find myself thinking about what it must have been like being trapped inside, what i might have done. it seems others still think of this also, with the number of recent postings here....
loknloll 3 years ago
god dude, just the though makes me sick to my stomach. i remember that footage, when they were playing, the pyros went off n you could see the ceiling catching fire..and then everyone, walking towards the exit. i have looked and looked and nothing. then i remember a camera outside showing the entrance of the club, the stampede was so bad that no one could get out...remember that?
