  • look how much rubber from the tires is on the track at 2:22.

  • To be totally honest, I enjoyed this ride. As much as people hated it, for a kid of my age when I rode it, going "fast" and through buildings and around corners and over water was really exciting.

  • This is not a Disneyland poor attempt at rollercoaster through the park as someone mentioned. This was originally people mover which was a TOUR of tomorrowland. A slow one at that (which I liked, a chance to relax and take it ALL in ON a ride). RR of course is the faster version but at no point is this an attempt at being a rollercoaster or a "test track". BRING IT BACK. SOMEHOW!!!!!

  • i think this ride is known for breaking down alot. this is disneyland poor attempt as a rollercoaster through the part

  • So Disney just checking here. You pretty much closed this ride when it had over 3 hour waits and was a favorite among many visitors just to leave the track barren and useless for over a decade now! COME ON BRING IT BACK!

  • This ride gave the best views of the park during the fireworks show and was a great way to cool off in the summer.

  • this wuold be awesome if it had tilting cars

  • Rocket Rods was GREAT!!! What a rush. They need to fix it and bring it back, even if they call it something else.

  • I always wanted to get on this ride....2 things always happened: 1. The lines were long and 2. The ride would always breakdown.

I agree that Disney needs to make a Tron theme.

  • Rocket Rods: a great ride in concept. A horrendous waste of time, money, and resources in execution. Even worse, nothing has replaced that track 10 years since the ride closed permanently.

  • @CoastersBolts the rocket rods was a Boondoggle right?

  • @CoastersBolts Wait did they even bother taking out the ride's tracks?

  • @Costerguy1234556 the ramp is too narrow for emergency escape, they need a wider ramp, the reason the TTA at Walt Disney World is still running because they have wider ramp than this they have catwalks and fencing on bothside of the tracks, while here at Disneyland only have one catwalk and the catwalk is very narrow so its time to build a newer ramp.

  • @sideslide23 I think you might be responding to the wrong comment. But might as well ask this:

since there was only one handrails on the side of the track and the Rocket Rods always broke down how did they evacuate the vehicles?

  • @Costerguy1234556 that was just a broke down evacuation but what if there a fires, a earthquake and other disaster, and theres no stairs or ladders for riders to get down from the ramp?

  • @sideslide23 Ah OK now I get it. I can picture what a couple of overweight people ruining down a narrow walkway during an earthquake would look like.

  • Removing the PeopleMover for this piece of crap was one of the biggest mistakes in Disneyland history.

  • The sound effects of this ride were the best I have ever heard in Tomorrowland, they are sorely missed.

  • Looking back, this was a really poorly themed ride

  • I always wondered what was up there thanks :D

  • at 2:45 is that a mirror or another car?

  • It looked quite good to me, fun anyway!

  • This ride was the WORST... it would stop and break..give you a biggest headache after the ride... I hope they do bring it back because with the technology that we have... I'm sure it can be a great ride again...

  • u could remake this on minecraft

  • They kinda look like early versions of Batmobiles! :D

  • at 1:28 , why was Disneyland Paris Space Mountain music playing?

  • @thedragoonknight The Observatron above the station often spins to the tune.

  • They closed down this ride for good because the Rocket Rods was a boondoggle

  • So what movie/ect is this themed off of?

  • @SlitMouthWoman The theme is a rapid transit ride not a movie.

  • Even though a Tron themed ride would be cool and a good fit for tomorrowland, I like when disney imagineers develop original theming for their rides instead of basing it off a movie and thats one reason why I liked the rocket rods. Not saying all the rides should be that way, since it is "Disney"-land after all, I just like when there is a good balance of both. I just think this ride specifically should be replaced with something entirely new and original.

  • I never even got to ride it

  • Man, I only rode this ride once when I was 7, so it must have been '98 which was the year it opened. But anyway, I LOVED IT. I had such a blast on it and still remember bits and pieces and even waiting in the line. xD

They should rebuild the track so it can properly accommodate the ride and let people ride it again. Give it another chance! 4 years is a shameful life span for a great ride.

  • i didnt ride on it because im not born i am too young to ride it now im older to ride it. but its its gone... I WANT ROCKET RODS NOW!!!!! i hate when the got the stupid buzz attarction i think tron should be some where. Thumps up if you agree.

  • <3 this ride. . . i member the car lifted up as soon as it leaves the station. . .MISS ROCKET RODS

  • man i remember this ride, i was like 8 years old when i went on it. it was super fun. now everytime i go back to disneyland, i always see the tracks and how they rusted over.

  • They put this ride after or before the people mover?

  • @jo951000 after

  • i remember riding, one it took forever to get there the live was a 4hour wait, then when i got there the only thrilling part was the take off and the rest was a fast people movers, they should destroy it and make mission to mars

  • what a dumbass ride !

  • @spacenutstou Agreed.

  • Probably the only boring "fast ride" in existence. (Or ex-existence.)

  • the line is underground?

  • This looks fun. It's like a tamer version of space mountain. Personally, i think it would be a good idea to bring this back.

  • I wish they would do something with the track jeesh. The emptiness imo makes tomorrowland look bad.

  • @xseasoninreverse So agree. Last time I was there there were literally weeds growing on it... I think Walt wouldn't be happy with that.

  • @oboeducky yes my gosh. Tomorrowland is in need of a revamp but it probably won't happen for some time because most of the attention is focused on California Adventure right now. at least EO is back and they're bringing back an upgraded star tours. As for this track, Same goes for starcade in Tomorrowland, there's a whole second story not even in use anymore.

  • I know this ride was so awesome. My family and I rode this back when it first opened. We were in line for hours waiting to ride it and I loved it after we got off but it broke down like three times when we were on it. Only got to ride it twice. Once when it opened in 1998 and once the year after. We came back to Disneyland in 2000 and it was closed and gone. Was kinda of upset that it wasn't going to be opened again. Still hold out hope it will be opened again someday.

  • It was pretty cool...when it worked.

  • due to earthquake codes for entering all the buildings it was closed. This was the best ride for the time it lasted. well worth the hour wait in line..they should bring the mover back at least.

  • the people that took out the people mover for the failed rocket rods needs to be Punch in the face, I naver got a chance to ride rocket rod, I only ride people movers not rocket rods so I love to meet the people that pute in rocket rods and Punch them in the freaking face.

  • Rocket Rods was a fun attraction while it lasted, but it didn't work, so now they just need to bring PeopleMover back. That track wasn't made to support a thrill ride.

  • Wow, I can't believe that Disney cannot afford to put another sign on the building at the entrance.

  • Certainly was not a suitable replacement for the Peoplemover, but it sure looked like fun to ride again and again. (NOTE: Never have been to Disneyland but only watched the video footage. Don't flame me too much. :P)

  • @Plu09530 the people mover tracks has not been used for 10 years. its been nothing but birds stuff.

  • Rocket Rods has to be one of the worst things Disneyland has ever done. Thank goodness those annoying noise polluters are gone from Tomorrowland, but, unfortunately, now too is the PeopleMover.

  • Disney Epic Fail. No surprise this attraction didn't last that long.

  • ride looks wack

  • at the end that small space ship car shelf is a car from the ride on top of the people mover there but that ride is gone to with the people mover :( :( :( :(

  • I do miss that bronze/copper look for space mountain though.

  • that looks like soooo much fun, i wonder what i can do to help bring it back..

  • @babygirl284187 I was okay, but it had so many problems that resulted in the closure. Factoring in the awful capacity this had, along with the continuous breakdowns, it wouldn't be worth it to bring this back.

  • @babygirl284187 Nothing. This ride can't come back after it caused so many problems on the track for the People Mover. Speaking of the People Mover, that deserves to come back more than Rocket Rods.

  • They took down the ride due to how expensive it was to maintain it. As I child, it was my favorite too. The speed of the ride would wear down the tires quickly and it was too much of a hassle and expense to keep the ride going...

  • my favorite ride when i was a little kid, i miss it :(

I always remember it would break down, I guess thats why they stopped it..

  • I never been on this, but they should've left this as the People Mover. This ride looked like a bunch of nonsense, and never would've survived this economy. Hopefully they'll bring back the TTA soon.

  • I was afriad to ride this when I was little!

I always wondered what used to be on that track

  • @ParkHopper I have to thank you so much for bringing this onto YouTube! I adored this ride as a little kid. I still remember one day I went on the ride with tennis shoes that were a little lifted, but the worker paid no mind to it. I came back the next day (same shoes) and a new worker said I wasn't allowed on. I was bummed but went back later and found the old worker from the first day who let me on. :)

  • This ride used to be one of my favorites... I was so bummed when was taken away. Disneyland should really invest in reworking the track so that they can bring this ride back.

  • @urbanlapixie read 'mouse tales' and 'more mouse tales' to find out more about this ride...

  • My sister used to work this ride. She would always be so stressed out when she got home because of all the complaints and probloms this ride would create. One time we rode it and it shut down and we had to walk on the track to get out.

  • god, this ride was such a fail, lol. How can you make a high-speed ride on the peoplemover track and not BANK THE TURNS???

  • They could have easily fit two people per row...that would have sped up the lines quite a bit...

  • I was there when they were testing it at night after shutting it down. Stuff used to come FLYING off the track from the cars, and I talked with some people who said they were on it when it got stuck, and their seatbelts malfunctioned and started to tighten and choke people. I was so dissapointed they never fixed it, if they'd gotten it to work it would've been a GREAT ride.

  • Okay: Wasn't the entrance in one of the buildings? Then you went underground and went up the Peoplemover platform to load? Is that how it was?

  • I loved this ride!

  • @DCFilmsStudio It was also shut down becuae the sponser refused to pay to have the turns banked, the constant speeding up and slowing down caused a lot of strain on the ride.

  • haha i remember i rode this when i was like six. and since that for the past how many years, i thought i had ridden space mountain xD

  • It would be cool if they took the old tracks out and made a magnet launching ride that would bank and go extremely fast. The theme should be light cycles from TRON and you could be seated in cycle shaped cars! How awesome would that be???

  • @Mahwebz I think they're hoping to do that, they're just waiting to see if Tron Legacy will be popular enough for it.

  • God, I remember coming to Disneyland at the age of 5 and seeing this and saying "when im old enough im gonna ride that!" cause it looked so cool. But im so bummed that its nothing now :(

  • i rode this once when i was in 8th grade, so like ohmygosh 10 years ago. i couldnt remember much about it but, as previously mentioned the RIDICULOUS wait time. And after watching this? its so not up to disney standards! where is the theme? this is was a put something fast on the track to take up some of the line going into space mountain and the matterhorn. I hope disney does something awesome with the track, and not something just cause. I agree with a TRON based ride!

  • @dsnyprincess1609 the theme was future transportation, same as the people mover... its future themed if you wanna get technical

  • There are a number of reasons that led to the closure of the Rocket Rods:

    1. The support structure and track originally built for the PeopleMover was not meant to be used for a high speed attraction and began to weaken.

    2. Tires were also a problem for Rocket Rods, due to high speeds and turning the tires wore quickly and had to be replaced within 4–7 days.

    3. The constant changes in speed caused the vehicles' on-board computer systems to fail, shutting down the entire attraction.

  • I road this when I was about 7. All I could remember was loud noises, dark tunnels and Tomorrowland. So I did some searching and found this ride! I never knew the name of it and I'm surprised at how short a life it had in Disneyland. It has potential (if brought back in some form) to be a (better) great ride! (My vote's for TRON!)

  • This ride was fun and all- good concept, but the line was MURDER. That line was so wretchedly long that it made the ride seem extremely short, and not worth waiting that long. Remember how we had to wait forever in that room with the 360 screen? And then in another room, and another, etc... But I have to say it was way better than Astro Blasters- that ride is disappointing to say the least.

  • THEY NEED TO DISMANTLE THAT TRACK AND START ALL OVER WITH A TRON THEMED TRACK AND RIDE!!!!

  • @10JECT10 And shut down most if not all of Tomorrowland just to take the track out?! Forget it! Yes, it looks bare without anything on it, but the track runs thru almost every single ride and shop in Tomorrowland.

  • @ThePirateprincess23 NO NOT REALLY, DISNEY ALWAYS HAS THEIR WAYS OF DOIN THINGS, LIKE DISMANTLING ONE SECTION AT AT TIME AND THEN ANOTHER AND SO FORTH. THEY HAVE THEIR WAYZ.

  • @10JECT10 there are rumors going around about Tony Baxter using the track for a TRON themed ride.

  • @ThePooptet One person said they met Tony Baxter at Disneyland and asked him if the People Mover should come back. He said he did and included it in his Tomorrowland redo plans. There are rumors that a Tron ride is going to go behind Pizza Port and Innoventions. If Tony gets to build his Tomorrowland plans then the People Mover would come back as it was with slightly different vehicles and a Tron ride behind Pizza Port and Innoventions.

  • @10JECT10

I seriously JUST posted a suggestion like that to their Facebook page! Maybe I'll start a group to get the idea going...

  • @kittykitty0204 TOTALLY GO FOR IT!!! IM DOWN!!!

  • @10JECT10

haha the group is up on FB...it's called "Disneyland needs a Tron-themed ride"

spread the word! I can't link it here because youtube won't let me post links :/

  • @10JECT10 the tracks on the structure or the whole Elevated structures and ramp?

  • @sideslide23 THE WHOLE THING! IT ALL NEEDZ TO GO. IF IT DIDNT WORK FOR THE ROCKET RODZ IT SURE WONT WORK FOR A TRON RIDE! THEY NEED TO START ALL OVER TRON STYLE!!!!

  • @10JECT10 agreed

  • @10JECT10 AGREED!!!! as for the vehicle; they should so remodel it to look like the "light runner" from Legacy

and to XSEASONINREVERSE; I can easly see a "Flynn's" arcade in tomomrrowland.

  • @ultilinium8 Flynn's in Disneyland? That would be awesome. Maybe a revamp of the old Starcade or something like that? They could even use the old upstairs area as Kevin's loft or something.

  • @10JECT10 they need to add walkway Balcony, Stairs, and other emergency escape on those ramps the reason they can't get the people mover back to original form because of the strict regulation.

  • @10JECT10 i agree with u

  • @10JECT10 YES. YES. YES. That is a GREAT idea!!

  • @10JECT10 Tron, People Mover 2, or what ever, they said that there going to take a fork and demolish the ramp becaise its too narrow and it can collap any time if there a earthquake, so in 2012, they'll take it down, and build a newer ramp which willl be wider and Earthquake resistance..

  • RIP Rocket Rods.

  • that looks so scary to ride. doesnt look safe

  • @Quintinlicious It wasn't

  • I went on this ride 3 times when it was opened during the last year of operation (the year 2000). It quickly became 1 of my favorite rides.

  • I went to disneyland about a month ago and i was sooo upset that I couldn't ride this.

  • cars land is having something like this designed.. just better theme

  • Sorry, I mean Zephyr

  • is it me or is this like the now- Golden Zepher- In California Adventure???? or at least it looks like it from the bording station.

  • @5blackcat12 Rocket Rods was never like Golden Zepher. However, the way the boarding station is designed on both rides looks a little bit similar because the boarding station for both Rocket Rods and the Peoplemover (the original ride that used that station) that is above the Tomorrowland stage (where Jedi Academy takes place at Disneyland) and directly under the satallite that is on the top level (where Astro Orbiter stood from 1967-1998 under the name Rocket Jets).

  • Oh wow i remember this one..went on it once for my 8th grade grad. The line was hell!!

  • I only got to ride this 2 times because the line was always 2+ hours!

  • how fast does this go?? 20 mph? 30?

  • @CaliChickScreamer It probably went about 45-60 mph. I am not so sure, but it definitely went faster than 20 or 30 mph.

  • they should just rebuild it and redesign the track and cars on the ride so it won't get anymore complaints

  • ive always wanted to ride this ride and i was like 1 or 2 wen it closed

  • why put a thrill ride on a track designed for a slow tram ride?

  • @granttheswimfreak To cheap to buy new tracks.

  • I hated the line with a passion, but when I was a teenager this was as fun as space mountain. It did break down lots, I remember 2 or 3 times in 1 day I had to see if there was a line or not and they shut id down for that day. Yeah the tires lasted lasted only 4-7 days and goodyear got out the contract after a couple weeks. looks slower than I remember, best part was cruising through autopia.

  • I never got to ride these. I visited Disneyland a couple times while they were building it then I came back a couple years later & it was gone. Looked pretty cool. Thanks for posting this.

  • best ride in history, hands down :D

  • The Rocket Rods completed the course of the 16-minute PeopleMover in only about 3 minutes. Because the Rocket Rods project was not given a large enough budget to bank the track's curves, the Rocket Rods had to slow down substantially to maneuver most of the turns. The support structure and track originally built for the PeopleMover was not meant to be used for a high speed attraction and began to weaken. It also had on board computer issues and would break down every day.

  • My brother was working at Disneyland for the summer and he said that the Rocket Rods closed down also was because of too many injuries on the ride... I guess a couple of the guest hit their a little pretty hard from all the stops and bumps.. also back pains... I wouldn't doubt it.. just watching this on video makes me dizzy... no thanks....

  • Bring back the People Mover. Magic Kingdom's newly refurbished Tomorrowland Transit Authority is so nice. Give Disneyland hers back. :\ Rocket Rods was a lame idea.

  • They need to bring back skyway.

  • they say the ride kept breaking down... it was only operational for two years (98 -99), can you believe that? i rode it... I preferred PeopleMover to this one, myself.

we did a Disney weekend last weekend, they admit that Tomorrowland needs to be renovated/upgraded but apparently finishing California Adventure will come first, then Tomrrowland gets an overhaul.

i kinda miss the PeopleMover ride, i did not like the Rocket Rods.

  • i been to disneyland so many times and i never rode this ?? what happened to it ???

  • @highclassloser it was shut down because the ride kept breaking down and the structure was not meant to have those speeds on it so i guess they were refurbishing it and never reopened it

  • i wish they would brig it back. I rember when they had the ride but i wasn't tall enough to ride it and i was awalys sad cause i wanted to go on it!!!!!!!! wonder what they'll do with the track they should put another ride their or somthing.

  • @darrenrocks1234 A better operating and higher capacity ride would be greatly appreciated up there. I don't want more 75 minute waits and continuous breakdowns!

  • @AdrenalineAddict610 hahahaha ya!!!!! besides that, it would be good.....

  • it sucked and the line was hella long

  • Yeah this ride was too ahead of its time... The needed to bank the track to keep the speed up and make a stronger track in the process, that way those things won't overheat. MY aunt and I went on those things and got stuck outside while it was raining!!! The tech guys were funny though "Oh no its raining, good thing we can go get dry" But they let us have a free ride and it was one of my more memorable days at Disneyland :)

  • i think they need to make it more of a speed coaster instead of slowing down. put that new 3d stuff and make it seem like a car chase, go like 60 mph and make that weird whoomp sound those vehicles make in star wars ep1. maybe even put up targets around tomorrowland where u can shoot space pests with lasers, yah that would be cool

  • Why did they replace the people mover with this garbage?

  • Correct, but I am hoping they'll bring the People mover Back to Disneyland so Tomorrowland can be back to its original form cause Space Mountain is back to the way it was and The old America Sings ride did Close but what will become of the old building?????

  • @CoolioRockstar innoventions is now where america sings was in.

  • This ride wasn't even created for people to see this as a possible mode of trasportation, it was created as a gimmick to showcase the New Tomorrowland

  • Rocket Rods Replaced ThePeopleMover!

But It Closed because it had too many breakdowns!

So the track is now empty waiting for something to be in its place!

  • from what i heard like a tron light cycle ride!!!!! wouldnt that be cool

  • The old track was made for a slow ride. But yeas, the Rocket Rods did ahve a lot of breakdowns due to the track over heating and such.

  • In all the years I have been going to Disneyland, I can easily say that this ride and the rest of the Tomorrowland overhall was the MOTHER of all screw ups I have ever seen.

  • Yeah, Paul Pressler fucked up a lot of stuff because he was a cheapskate.

  • I'm glad that the both of us know our disneyland info. We should chat sometime about our knowledge of this subject. :)

  • THW people mover cars are still very much visible at the park! They are now the cashiers counter at the end of the buzz light year blaster ride. Check it out! They cleaned them up and painted them! The shuttle shelfs in the store are the old shuttles cars from that missile ride they had when they opened..pretty sweet!

  • @McCain Unfortunately, yes it is. . . I miss the Peoplemover.

  • dont blink youll miss everything. this sucks. bring back the people movers.

  • Good concept, poor execution.

  • I miss this ride! i used to love the sounds and noises it made

remember when bewitched and 5ive played at disneyland haha and you could see this ride in the background ahh good times

  • I REMEMBER THAT!!!! In fact i was there when they were setting up the stage. I miss those days!

  • yes, yes it was

  • 2:45 is that a mirror or just another car. I've never been on these unfortunately :(. It'd be cool either way!

  • Just to let you know- Rocket Rods ran at Disneyland from 1998 to 2000, not 1998 to 1999. I know this because I rode this ride 3 times during their 45th anniversary in the year 2000. So get your facts straight!

  • My parents surprised us by taking my sister and I on the day it opened. We waited over 3 hours to be some of the first to ride it.

At night it was amazing to see the park all lit up. And it felt fast and pretty smooth. A lot of people hated this attraction, I thought it was one of the best rides ever.

I wish they had taken the time to build it up to standard instead of trying to half-ass it then scrap it all together.

  • It is rumored that Tony Baxter is possibly designing a new ride based off the movie Tron Legacy.

  • Comment removed

  • This thing sounds like F-Zero.

  • YOU got it, it does sound like the vehilcles on F-Zero for the Super nintendo I remember that.

  • i actually liked this ride ppl bag it 2 much, but hey! gues wat, the ppl moveer is ddead, this is a nice thing, its better having a ride then no ride at all!!!!!!!!!! lol but the people mover was better, i know! :)

  • This ride Sucks without anything on this track, unless they bring back People Mover or Rocket Rod, this track is a piece of SHlT

  • BRING BACK ROCKET RODS. No one wants the obnoxious Observatron, it's useless!

  • I heard repeat visitors to Disneyland call what's left of the track, the Eyesore of Tomorrow.

  • Really? I think of it as a landmark because of the PeopleMover and Rocket Rods.

  • look it up on wikipedia. i read it the other day. the main reason is because they broke down on average twice a day and they had to install new tires every 4-7 days.

  • I've always wondered what happened to these things???

One summer I was riding them, and the next when I came back with my family, they were gone. wth?

Thanks for the great memories :-)

  • @ManOfMeans they kept on breaking down.
