  • Praise God for this. sooner or later, EVERY knee will bow, every tongue will confess....the wise ones do it now. love that courage.

  • Praise Jesus, such a good song. Jesus is pursuing you all for salvation and a relationship, just like the song says :). Read Ephesians 2!!!

  • Sufjan Stevens and friends do an incredible version of this on his "Songs for Christmas" album. I'm not religious- but music like this makes me feel like I could be. And that's pretty great.

  • @hybridhubris Music has an incredible ability to reach us in ways words alone cant.

  • I hate this band now... they souled out...

They are christian, now they suck. They should not win any awards.

  • @ImSoOffended Just because they Claim to be christian doesn't mean their music isn't good. Music is music , christian or not. You should'nt say they suck because of one song.

  • @ImSoOffended Pretty sure what you meant to say was "I love this band even more now, they are true to what they believe in. They are Christian, that's ok, even if I'm not. They should will all the awards."

  • @choirpsycho I was just trolling, I like them, they are a good band.

  • I was disappointed that it sounded so similar to Sufjan's version, but graced nonetheless!

  • I'm a Muslim but I love this song ;P

  • @MrStringSavvy I like you.

  • There's nothing quite like those old redback hymnals :). I love these guys.

  • So wonderful.

  • hymn*

  • this is definitley just how Sufjan sings it

  • Music is suppose to be the universal language. So stop arguing about stupid crap and just come together as brothers and sisters and listen to a damn good song!

  • So much better when Suf sings it

  • Love it! Does anyone know where I can upload this song? (:

  • Come thou and listen to Caliver!! Just put up a new song called "In Memory" Check it outttt

    youtube.com/watch?v=3j9IahpRHB0

  • Does anyone else think that they are postmodernists? I mean they did a Hindi like EP, believe in transcendentalism, and do Christian Hymns. I know they were raised christian but marcus says in the song "I gave you all" he says, "how can you say your truth is better than ours". to me this is the basis of postmodernism so i was just wondering if anyone else agreed.

  • This is the Sufjan arrangement!

  • Simply Beautiful

  • Jesus is my best friend..which is really weird cause I treat him like crap all the time. Good song.

  • its amazing..we sang this song in seminary and i cried. So beautiful. <3

  • In this video and the Sufjian Stevens video this is referred to as a German Hymn but it is, in actuality, an English Hymn.

  • God doesn't give a fuck if you say fuck. Christian Ethics teacher told me that.

  • @Wheredidallmypantsgo Your right, but basic grammar and not sounding like an idiotic, tiny minded ass is why you don't say Fuck all the time,

  • @uberdoink Which is why Mumford and Sons only use it in one song.

  • @brooksfb19 if you were truly about Christ and what he wants you should be rejoicing at the fact that this song is being sung by these guys. f bombs or not you can be a christian and if these guys are, then awesome, if not then maybe this song will work on them like only jesus can. please don't speak for christ or other christians.

  • @nichtrumbull I think they might already be Christian. Isn't their lead singer the son of some church leaders?

  • again, God always wins. one of the most popular bands sung a hymn for God. that is wonderful :)

  • Before finding this... I just knew they had a little Jesus soul inside of them! :]

  • "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love; here's my heart, O take and seal it, seal it for thy courts above." Some Christians don't like swearing, some think its fine. This lyric, if you think swearing is bad, should tell you why its ok and actually important that they are singing it. Also, just because two people use banjos and do the same song doesn't mean one ripped off the other. The banjo pretty much has the same timbre to its notes all the time.

  • i really don't care if they drop f bombs...sometimes it's nessisary. I love the purity of the song and it's always been a favorite of mine :)

  • i dont wanna hear this song from a band who drops f bombs in there interviews and songs.... dont get me wrong i love mumford and sons... but i dont wanna hear them playing this song

  • @brooksfb19 Stupid. A song is a song, anyone can sing it, regardless of whether you want them to or not. How absurd and arrogant!

  • @sackofnachos *trollface*

  • It is NOT a German Hymn - It was written in 1758 by Robert Robinson. The tune - Nettleton - John Wyeth - 1813

  • They need to make a studio recording of this. Like now!!

  • Hearing them play a christian song makes me feel great inside :)

  • Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.......... I can't hear the music over your immaturity.

  • im sorry @atyelarema thats exactly what makes it a cover, otherwise it would be "their rendition".

  • I love Mumford and Sons. :)

  • sup sufjan stevens. i mean i love mumford and it's an undeniably gorgeous song. but i don't think it counts as a cover if it's identical?

  • wow, great rendition! But, holy crap i'm so sick of seeing all these pointless debates on youtube, if you want to argue join a forum, GET OFF YOUTUBE! Christians- why are you waisting your time worrying about what people say here, instead of arguing with people who are not going to change their mind about the faith, why dont you study your bible.

Non-christians - stop telling the world how you hate Jesus, or whatever you feel like everybody has to know, again nobodys gonna change their mind.

  • these guys ROCK!!

  • This is why no one can get along, and it's very simple and so easy to understand. ready? I AM BETTER THAN YOU. I wish I could capitalize a period, just to drive that point home. haha

  • @MrStringSavvy You can, its called an exclamation point.

  • My fav

  • When @DirtySanchezLives is the most reasonable person in the comment thread you know you've gone wrong somewhere.

  • Can we just enjoy the song?

  • Lots of people have done terrible things because they thought it was right... for them. There is a higher standard that this song speaks of... trusting in Jesus. His standard lives and blesses people in every nation tribe and tongue. So, don't 'do what you think is right'. Do what Jesus says.

  • just live the way you think is right, then we all find out what happens later

  • keep it up and soon we will have to say its the "c-word" people who are christians good for you, please take this for what it is. I stopped going to church, because everytime i referanced the bible i had 10 people arguing over what it actually means. In the end more deaths have been caused over religeon than any other in the history of man!

  • @BIGRED224FOREVER

Just a friendly correction for the record. More people have suffered and died under the rule and violence of athiests. Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao, and Stalin are verifiably responsible for more deaths by murder and meyhem in just one century than the combined actions of those "professing" religious motives to thier depredations. I would argue in many circumstances that even those who used religion as the cloak to their motives never wore it as their mantle. I agree with the rest.

  • @IamDanielLongo Hitler was most definitely *not* an atheist. Pol Pot, Stalin, and Mao were atheists, but it is hard to see how atheism could have been their motivation. All four men bought into other ideologies which they pursued without the application of reason. This is symptomatic of politics and of religion: both, topics about which people feel a right to hold opinions immune to scrutiny.

  • Why can't we be friends?

  • That being said, I came back for another listen and looked at earlier comments. I saw all that stuff about the LDS conversation and it just made me want to watch the south park episode.. I think it is very appropriate that LDS can be rearranged to make LSD haha.. Religion is stupid, how about some faith instead?

  • I'm not much of a religious person at all, but I love old praise songs. I don't care if they are about Jesus, Moses, or a biscuit. Good music is good music, whether it's from the other side of the pond or cooked up with greens n' cornbread down in southern USA. If you can't hear the beauty and the soul put into it, then you are missing out. Artists can do their best work when they believe they are an instrument to the almighty.

  • @MrStringSavvy beautiful comment, really. A true musician, and overall great person.

  • @MrStringSavvy I am not a very religious person either but their is just something about old praise songs that know how to bring a shiver down your spine and a smile to your face.

  • @lespaulkid Same here.. I arrange a lot of my music like that. Can I get an AMEN?!

  • Cool tune, written by Robert Robinson an English cunt form the 1800's not an old German hyme at all and don't forget to Suck up to God.. citizens!

  • Cool tune, written by Robert Robinson an English cunt form the 1800's not an old German hyme

  • really your gonna turn this into a religious debate yall. is that really nescessary? its a good song. all the denominations of christianity follow the same god. suck up your differences and deal with each other and unite under Christ

  • I wish they would sing You Are My Sunshine.

  • This song isn't about religion!!! this song should bring us together!!! this song is about god and how without him we are nothing. If you want to fight about whose religion is correct you are missing the purpose of religion... to bring us all closer together and ultimately closer to god...

  • I love Marcus Mumford's voice.. so muccch! Great song, praise God!

  • youtube.com/watch?v=vGdQilOxAh0

  • It is an Irish hymn, but thanks for posting!

  • LDS = cult

  • @skyblue7322 It's not a cult.

  • Praise our Great God and Savior the Lord Jesus Christ. Who came in the form of a man. To die on the cross for our sins and one the third day raise to prove He had conquered death that all who believe might be saved and come into a relationship with the triune God.

  • In regards to all of the people Bible Bashing: "Forced worship stinks in God's nostrils" I personally love God with all my heart soul, strength and mind, but there are some topics that don't really matter what your beliefs are. Focus on major things that apply to your life, and consult the Lord for answers. E.x I have given up debating whether the earth was created in 6 days or in an theistic evolutionist way, because that was a long time ago and God can do whatever He wants. He is God after all

  • 56% of those views are mine

  • Shut the fuck up and enjoy good music, people.

  • And to everyone else, I believe the technical definition for Christian is to believe in Christ as the Savior of the World, which we do. Hence the name "Christian".

  • @cloudrunner11 Technically "Christian" was originally used by those in government and other positions of rulers of the land to identify those who followed Christ. The term, by literal definition, meant "little Christ" and thus identified those living as "Christians" as being those that followed (and MODELED) the teaching of Jesus, the Christ.

That's not said to correct, Cloud, but simply to expound on it. No offense was intended.

  • @TheMrCrum None taken, thanks for the correction, that's good to know. Funny enough, that actually supports my arguement.

  • This is my favorite band singing my favorite hymn!!

  • Don't argue religions. They are praising Jesus. Let it be as it is. As oppose to pushing your own beliefs and doctrines, let God minister to you through the song

  • This sounds Sufjan Stevens inspired....for sure...sounds great

  • watch?v=OCzHCuc-JVo

Great version too from my church(:

  • Faith doesn't have a specific name, or apply to a certain people. It is love for God and all His beautiful creations (which includes you, and everything else). All you need is faith and open arms for everyone, regardless of what they call themselves.

Great song, I get goosebumps every time I hear it.

  • Why do people argue over comments? It's actually really stupid. First you know you'd never say half those things to the persons face and Second let's be honest do you really believe what you have to say is relevant? I mean do you really think that he's just going to be like "o my goodness you're right I'm going to renounce my mormon faith and believe what you believe or visa versa. So yeah.. this is a great song and great band!

  • you know just enjoy that they are doing a hymn isn't that enough

  • And this is why Mumford & Sons don't label themselves as Christians..... because everyone has to turn it into a judge fest ......

  • @syoungn08 The ironic thing is according to the Bible it says not to judge. But some "Christians" or maybe just those new in the faith don't realize that.

  • You know, being LDS (a.k.a. "Mormon) I've noticed over the years that some christians spend way too much time worrying about doing or believing the wrong thing and not enough time is spent doing what good Christ told us we ought to be doing. Bible bashing never never brings good change, it just plants doubt and makes people angry.

  • 1. Be grateful.

    2. Be smart.

    3. Be clean.

    4. Be true.

    5. Be humble.

    6. Be prayerful.

once we get that then were more like our savior

  • @ToNiCProduckions Please don't go quoting scripture on me against me, cause I could show you sooo many bible references that support my religious point of view (yes, mormons do believe in the bible as far as it is translated correctly). Mormons are christians, I assure you; I know Jesus is my savior and atoned for the sins of the world. Point is, if you respect what I believe I'll respect your beliefs. Now let's just be friends and enjoy this great music, shall we? :)

  • @cloudrunner11 Dude, i got your back. Im not mormon, but i have a couple very close friends who are. I have talked extensively with them about their religion and have come to the conclusion that they are most definately christian. And to everyone out there who says that they aren't, talk to one of them, and actually listen to what they have to say, and not just bible bash them and you will see. Im not saying that they are right necessarily, but they are for sure christians.

  • @peakpower23

Christians aren't polytheists. Christians don't believe the Father is physical. Christians don't believe a God of one essence and three persons can reveal himself as two persons in one physical location.

  • @cornerstonable sources please.

  • @peakpower23 Thanks, I appreciate that.

  • @peakpower23 I am in fact LDS and we are indeed Christians. We are the Church of JESUS CHRIST of Ladder Day Saints. I'm pretty sure that Christ is in the name of our church. Thanks for standing up for us! Too many people think we're a cult who worship Satan and have horns.. When really we just try to live as best we can, in the way we believe is right. Just like those who don't believe there is a God live in the way THEY think is how they're supposed to. Take his advice and just listen to us.

  • @brokenxxhallelujah as an LDS, i'd encourage you to read the bible, but don't impose your culture on it. Use proper exegesis, and you'll see a lot more truth revealed to you about the scriptures. There are things that mormons believe that just don't match up to the bible no matter what translation you read.

  • @brokenxxhallelujah I do not believe you are a cult. And I would never attack you or other LDS. I am a non-LDS Christian living in Salt Lake City so I have LOTS of contact with LDS. I would encourage you to read the Bible and not just the book of Mormon as many LDS have been taught. The Bible is directly God-breathed, Joseph Smith was just one man. And the book of mormon has changed over the years to suit what the higher-ups want the church to believe. Test your faith! :)

  • @dovesgaze17 Lol we do read the bible! I'm not sure why people don't read it more, because it is just as important as the Book of Mormon. =) I'm not sure what you mean by the Book of Mormon has changed? It's exactly the same as when it was written and then translated..?

  • @brokenxxhallelujah Actually it's not. I know an ex-Mormon who was a high-up transcriber of the older versions of the Book of Mormon and she left the church when she saw all the discrepancies over the years. Now the church has locked them up and won't let anyone see them. I'm glad you read the Bible, there's a lot of Mormons in SLC who don't and push the Book of Mormon as their only doctrine. Blessings to you! :)

  • @brokenxxhallelujah *The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  • @peakpower23 Christians believe that Jesus is God in the flesh. As in the eternal God who created everything - never having a beginning - never having an end - Jesus, we claim, is God. Mormons don't believe that Jesus is God in the flesh. Mormons are not Christians.

  • @ToNiCProduckions Please don't tell us what we don't believe in. (: We are Christians. Hence the Christ in our name. Which, contrary to popular belief, is not "Mormons". We are The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We believe in the same and only Christ, our Redeemer and Saviour.

  • my favorite verse in the Bible: Nehemiah 8:10: "Eat, drink and be merry for today is holy unto the Lord...The joy of the Lord is your strength." That last part is all that matters.

  • This is a praise song, not a debate topic.

  • Hey everybody guess what- this is a great song by a great band and there's no use in religious debate. The Bible doesn't specify whether the wine was alcoholic or not. All it tells us is that we are not to get drunk. One glass= not so bad if we can control ourselves so lets stop calling each other blasphemers kay? kay good. now enjoy this beautiful hymn.

  • haha, lets just enjoy the music folks. Long live mumford and sons, whatever their convictions!

  • can people please stop tainting a well covered hymn video with religious debate

  • Great sing. Even greater by Mumford. No debate necessary. :)

  • Lemme clear this up, Jesus never drank wine. It was grape juice. Its one of those words that has changed over the years. The bibles says that people did get drunk, and maybe they did, but Jesus would not harm his own body, for he cannot allow impurities to be put into it. Im sure that when he made wine, it was some sort of jesus recipe, or the wine he drank was pure and unfermented. I dont care what the scripture may appear to say. Its no contridiction, just something we dont get or understand

  • @ethsailliamswa Don't be retarded. Jesus turned water into wine. & hate to ruin your day, but it was alcoholic, and there's nothing wrong with alcohol. The thing we should take out of that story is not whether or not wine is good, or what kind of wine it was. but we should be amazed at God's miralce and his power.... but, the Bible is not anti-alcohol. Jesus drank. Don't act like he didn't, or it was "grape juice"... that's adding to the Bible. and thats blasphemy.... but anyway, Mumford rocks!

  • @dbeckful Hey, you went too far there. I would never blasphem the bible, I just don't beleive Jesus would harm his childrens body with wine, its one thing if they made it differently back then, but I am skeptical on wether or not he would put an alcoholic beverage into his own holy being, it doesn't sit right with me, correct me if you must, don't go out and call me a blasphemer if you didnt even first ask me why I said that. If you would like to further explain, I have an open mind.

  • @dbeckful Soooo...what happened to loving like Christ? Calling someone a retard? last time i checked...Jesus didn't do that..

  • @ethsailliamswa You gotta be a Southern Baptist. Where does it say anywhere that wine is impure? Do you know why Baptists don't believe in sex? Could lead to dancing! I'll remind you now that King David danced naked in front of the Ark of the Covenant when it was brought back to Jerusalem. That's in one of the Samuels...probably 2nd Samuel.

  • @crowe78 Who said Baptists don't believe in Sex? That's quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

  • @ballin139 crowe78 was making a joke, because baptist are against dancing. "baptist dont have sex because it could lead to dancing." get it now?

  • @ballin139 Really though, we believe in sex. God created it and meant it to be between one man and one women in marriege

  • @micah960 ahemm, r u criticizing my brother? he is about to propose to his boyfriend of 4 years. i worked for HRC and volunteered for openly gay candidates, love is a beautiful thing and shouldn't be held back. God created all people equal and believed that love is a beautiful thing. Now i don't know if Noah and Oliver have had sex, but i know that they love each other more than anything else in the world. Is there something wrong with that? no.

  • @sixx122690 Uhmm no I said nothing directly to your brother sir/mamm. All I can say is that even though I am not certain that it says in the bible that it says homosexuallity is bad, if god thought that love between two men is good, why can't they have a child? And trust me I aint some asshole who wants to burn gays or anything, I have a lot of cool gay friends. All I know is that the way I was raised and taught is that Homosexuallity is bad.No one can know for sure so Im open to me being wrong

  • @sixx122690 haha yes he is personally criticizing YOUR brother. Look everyone has their different opinions and the right to express them, america or not people shouldnt be afriad to express their thoughts whether its politics, gay marriage, religion or any other controversial issue, and the fact that you felt personally attacked by his opinion just goes to show that you do not understand what this countrys foundations are. his opinion was given and you dont have to agree or disagree but just deal

  • @ballin139: really, I was making a joke. No offense was intended but I see that you have been pretty judgmental in your comments. You might wanna check that. Just sayin...

  • @ethsailliamswa their was no grape juice back in biblical time. No way to process it...So other then to squeeze it off the vine right then..and drink it within a day or two..when it was ripe..not possible. Sorry but they all drank wine. I know it' sounds really super insane to think that Jesus drank wine..but that was the only safe thing to drink. Water wasn't clean, their wasn't a way to make it clean, that they knew of.

  • @Nehimomma In fact, Paul even says to take a little wine. Red wine, in moderated amounts, is healthy. Drunkenness is wrong, not drinking in and of itself. A lot of Christians don't drink because of the risk of becoming addicted to it/becoming drunk, but yeah.

Also, the wine in those days wasn't the way it is now. Pretty sure it would take massive amounts of wine back then in order to get drunk.

  • @Nehimomma Some things we just won't know, until we're actually in heaven and can ask Jesus ourselves. But I do know that when we get to heaven, Christ won't be judging us on whether we drank wine, or had a tattoo, or went to church every Sunday. He'll be judging us on one thing- whether or not we have Jesus. Understand what really matters- not fighting about wine, but to sread the gospel, like He commands. And who's going to want to know Christ when all Christians do is disagree and fight?

  • @Nehimomma Although that does make sense, you gotta remember, he TURNED it into "wine", not, " He went out to a grape vine, picked grapes, squeezed grapes, and then let them drink it. It is possible that what you said is true, but if He turned one thing into another, Im sure he knew what he was turning it in to, and I doubt it was an alchoholic beverage

  • @ethsailliamswa "A feast is made for laughter, and wine makes life merry, but money is the answer for everything" -Ecclesiastes 10:19

"wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart." -Psalm 104:15

  • Not to start a pointless argument, but this hymn isn't German.

Either way, Mumford and Son's version is great.

  • One of my favorite hymns in one of the best arrangements I have ever heard. Well done Mumford & Sons

  • Marcus may be a Christian, but he is not religious, he has a relationship with his God, God can only save if you need saving and He shows us all that Jesus loves us even when we say Fuck and mean it. I know that I have found such peace with my relationship with God because of some of this music, it's not just words, it's worship.

  • @heatherfeather654 That is profound!!!! Thank you so much for posting something that I have believed for years and thought no one else agreed with :)

  • That word is a good old Saxon word that the U.K. has had forever. Lost it's zing a bit over the years.

His church pushes compassion and caring for others, I can like that. Whatever makes him and the others feel good with life is healthy.

Jesus drank wine and liked to be with people celebrating. Christianity has started to fossilize here in America, it has grown grim.

  • Gosh. One of my favorite hymns AND Mumford singing this!? Crazy happy right now.

  • not really into relegion, but any chance to hear previous unheared material by Mumford & Sons is a chance ill take up

  • This has the be the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my entire life. My favorite hymn AND my favorite band?

It brought many tears to my eyes. ♥

  • This sounds exactly like Sufjan Stevens' version.

Not that I have a problem with that.

  • Such beautiful words... I love this!

  • The lyrics were written by Robert Robinson, a non-conformist English minister who was converted under the ministries of George Whitefield and John Wesley. The hymn tune in an adaptation of an American folk tune by Asahel Nettleton, an American minister from Connecticut who was prominent in the Second Great Awakening.

BOTTOM LINE: There is nothing German here.

  • Where is Fryersmuck?

  • This is Sufjan's arrangement right?

  • these four...man.

  • Favorite song? check. Favorite band? check.

  • Fantastic version. Big credit to Sufjan Stevens for the masterful arrangement, which they are admittedly borrowing.

  • MY FAVORITE BAND SINGING MY FAVORITE HYMN <3 i'm in such a good mood now :)

  • my favorite hymn sung by my favorite band just awesome man

  • Awesome!

  • why do people go to gigs just to talk?

  • You don't see many videos with zero dislikes...

  • This is the Sufjan Stevens composition almost exactly. Mumford and Sons are obviously inspired by Sufjan, at least! Search Come thou Fount of Every Blessing by Sufjan Stevens and see for yourself!

  • @tcginn yea theres another video of m&s playing this and marcus says that theyre going to do the sufjan stevens arrangement of it :)

  • I resisted signing up for a youtube account until now so I can like this :)

  • This is precisely a cover of Sufjan Stevens' version of this song, from one of his Christmas albums.

  • I always wondered if he was a Christian before I saw this video. So many of his lyrics from the album 'Sigh No More' definitely seemed like they had a Christian perspective, but he threw out the f-bomb in "Little Lion Man". Not saying that swearing sends you straight to hell, ha. it's just that people tend to lose credibility when they attach things like that to their lyrics and profess a Christian faith.

  • @btkrick My thoughts exactly!

  • @btkrick /yeah I agree. I think that the placement of that word in that song is just to deliver a sense of how much sin was in his life. Without that word, the force and importance of it all probably wouldn't have hit as hard. It definitely turned me off at first, but i don't think any other word in that song would have impacted me as hard.

  • 0 dislikes is how it should be
