@tmla as of right now they are. It's under construction. It is being extended 368 yards into the ocean, it will be made out of steel resistant to salt water and will last another 40 years.

If the Mexicans crossing the borders at night can be spotted with infra red, why don't they buy a small scuba oxygen tank and flippers and swim from a distance back on the Mexico side and swim as far as possible on the US side without coming up at day or night.

you can still visit this spot. The park is open from 6am to 10pm however the Mexmunjom and the Joint Security beach are open from 7am to 7pm daily. MAC Circle is open to tourist on SAT and SUN from 10am to 2pm. All communication with the other side is prohibited in any way shape or form.

If the Border Patrol would spend some time focusing on punishing and deporting illegals already here, it would probably serve as a deterrent to Mexicanos thinking about crossing illegally. I would love to not have a fence, but when a first world country shares a border with a third world country, the richer country has to do something to keep all the poor from the poorer country from inundating it and overwhelming the system, lowering the standard of living for everyone.

Many of these illegals work as day laborers on construction sites where they're paid under the table in cash; therefore, pay NO taxes except sales tax when they spend it. There are studies (among many) posted on the economic impact of undocummented workers posted by Dr. Raul Hinojosa of UCLA, that contradict your statements. Scapegoating of people of another race is a direct result of economic situations, thus the relevance of the Bush administration and their complete failure (and criminality) in this area. Another example of scapegoating such as this one was during Hitler's Germany.

check out the CBO's report on this issue. State and local govt's rely on sales tax and property taxes for their revenues. Most illegals do not pay property tax because they rent -- therefore, these states, like Calif, do not recoup their costs incurred in educating these people, healthcare costs (because ER's cannot turn away the uninsured), and the increased costs to law enforcement, overcrowding of jails, and classrooms, etc. Cherrypick studies all you want, but I trusta a gov't study more.

No, I don't think it will "stop" illegal immigration. But it will sure slow it down a TON. At last check, the fence that has been constructed thus far has a 90%+ success rate in stopping the flow of illegals in those sections. I absolutely agree that the Govt. needs to go after employers MUCH harder and place heavy sanctions on them for hiring illegals. But until then, the fence that was signed and appropriated for needs to be built ASAP! Thank you.

Actually, the apprehension rate with the current fence is closer to 98% in the 3 mile Western segment of the Border. According to the BPs own estimates, fewer than 2 people per day make it through. So we the taxpayer are forking out about $40 million per mile to keep out a couple of guys, and DHS is threatening OUR parklands (which we paid $500 million to acquire and restore) with severe environmental degradation. This is a boondoggle--nothing more than Hunter's pet pork-barrel project.

I was part of a yoga class on both sides of the fence last month. At the end, we formed a circle - half on each side, and I was one of the people to reach my fingers through the fence to join with the Mexican half of the circle. Overhead a hawl was flying - seeming to follow the circle we were making. I imagined this bird wondering why we were so silly, to have this fence between us. How very silly we humans are.
