actually, I think Luther did backup singing in the original song. But Whitney did her own rendition before Luther. Luther's version is clearly closer to Whitney's than the original

Actually Whitney released it on her 1991 album "I'm your baby tonight". Luther later released it on his 1995 album "Songs".

do your research whitney recorded hers first.
She's actually the one that made the song popular because it was out almost 10 years before she released it.
But when whintey covered it the song blew up and was a #1 hit.
