  • My GOD. This is INCREDIBLE! So beautiful!

  • Just hearing the music give me a flash back when I was playing Donkey Kong Country Level 1-4 Super Nintendo 15 years ago (1997). AWESOME SYMPHONIC !

  • wonderfull

  • Really love how the pianist and violinist get really into it. Sure it barely sounds like the original but this was an interesting take on the song.

  • I don't hear any Donkey Kong Country music out of that piece

  • @Veit81 Listen to the original Aquatic Ambiance piece and then to the arrangement again. You can hear the leitmotif pretty often.

  • I pine for an orchestral medley of Aquatic Ambiance, Stickerbrush Symphony, and Frosty Frolics.

  • The problem with getting professional orchestras to perform music like this is that they see only the tablature and have not or have any interest in familiarizing themselves with the "atmosphere" of the original.

  • hey is that the pianist from distant worlds? it looks like him.

  • @ragnaroktomorro

It's Benjamin Nuss, i don't know about distant worlds I and II, but he played in Distant Worlds Coming Home.

He was born in Germany (where he still lives).

He made an Album called "Nuss plays Uematsu" he even wrote a Song for Uemastu, who in return wrote a Song for him. XD

I think that Respect for each other got him a playce in Distand Worlds XD.

  • what a beautiful piece. Brings me back to when i was a kid and i first played the game. :) good memories

  • Steinway, the piano of champions. What a sound!

  • This piece and arrangement remind me of Mannheim Steamroller.

  • Wow. Never imagined DK music in full orchestra! Mind blown! You know, I wonder if Video Games Live started all of this. If so, we have them to thank for breathing new life our favorite video game soundtracks! If not, then thank you whomever's idea this was!

  • @sivarticus1985 Composer/conductor Koichi Sugiyama started it August 1987 in Japan. The first video game music concert outside Japan: August 2003 in Germany.

  • @Naleka2008 Ah thanks for that lil bit of trivia! I did not know that!

  • @sivarticus1985 very welcome. if you care for more details, check 'symphonic game music concerts' on Wikipedia. :)

  • @sivarticus1985 Please, Video Games Live is a mockery of a video game concert. They mainly play music from new games (even games that aren't out...). Tommy Tallarico is really just an Xbox fanboy, and it shows in Video Games Live.

Japan has been doing these for a long time. And I don't even think Video Games Live was the first American one (though bros have made it the most popular sadly).

  • @SloganYams Well I enjoyed the VGL concert that was in Orlando a few months ago. I think it brings a different audience than one you would see at a more sophisticated concert like this one, and are meant to be fun and informal, even if Tommy is a Xbox fanboy. He still plays songs everyone loves to hear from Nintendo and Sega and such and introduces video games as works of art to those who wouldn't normally view them the way we gamers do. IMO I think they're two separate experiences.

  • @sivarticus1985 One of the problems with VGL is that when it does do music like Mario or Zelda, it's just done in an obligatory way. They only do the very basic music from the original games in the series (which is nice, but the series have a lot more to offer with their histories). They don't even do Sonic or Shenmue anymore, and Final Fantasy is only ever represented with the overblown One-Winged Angel, again, a lot more to offer.

  • @sivarticus1985 *continued* And they have never done DKC or a lot of other classics at VGL, they're far too busy playing music from Lair and God of War (which are both very generic "fantasy" scores, and if I wasn't told ahead of time which track was which I couldn't tell them apart). I hardly consider VGL a video game orchestra, it's more of just commercialism pandering to the Xbox Live crowd. It has some good points, but they're greatly overshadowed.

  • soouuunnnddddd

  • I'm not going to say I don't like reinterpretation, but I will say that the song doesn't do a great job of capturing the feel of the original. This version is too bouncy. Especially around 2:00. I feel it should have more legato notes, at least in the lower register. It makes me think of an industrial setting instead of a soothing underwater swim. I think I would enjoy it a lot more if I hadn't played the game.

  • beautiful

  • Lovely interpretation. It really sounds very Masashi Hamauzu. Not much is similar to the original, instead this is something new and interesting. The original, of course, has something special which can't be replaced by reinterpretations (which this version obviously doesn't even attempt).

The beginning of this is especially good IMO. It reminded me of something, and I finally figured out that it was the song Wow by Kate Bush.

  • Even though they may have tweaked aquatic ambiance to much, that intro til :43 was one of the most beautiful symphonic intros I've heard.

  • The rendition of aquatic ambiance was interesting, but I found the piano kind of distracting.

  • Good, but i wish they wouldn't take their 2:30 min till they get to the part for what we paid for.

  • 5 people are deaf, because no one can dislike such amazing music !

  • omg... this is way to great....

    So damn nice music....

  • I love the part at 3:31.

  • obergeil

  • 0:44 ...I got chills...

  • WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG JUST WOW. goes to show how great this track is that it got this kind of attention and recognition .

  • Benyamin Nuss has matured a lot since the previous concert Symhonic Fantasies, I really like his playing. Beautiful arrangement, very Debussy-like.

  • i mean...aside from the fact that the arrangement strays from the original, listen to when they play the ostinato of the orginal, then listen to their reproduction of that ostinato, played by the lead violinist at 3:16. It's different than the original. That's definitely not something that should be done in an arrangement. I'm talking about the section of it that starts at 3:20

  • This arrangement was lovely at parts. I wish it stuck with the beautiful melody for a greater duration of the song.

  • It's amazing to hear Masashi Hamauzu arrange DONKEY KONG of all things. I can't believe I haven't heard this earlier... It's beautiful sounding too.

  • Its like the version from the video game orchestra in japan, just a bit more original. Its a pleasure listening to it.

  • Aaaaah!! Kranky Kong would be proud of this

  • @nahum67 lmao so second you on that

  • I'm so glad I stumbled upon this, but I'm disappointed to see the negative comments like "Oh it doesn't sound like the original". If you want to hear the original, listen to the soundtrack.

Have an open mind and appreciate the fact that a composer elaborated on a beautiful melody. The "actual" Aquatic Ambience song is roughly a minute and a half long that loops continously in the game; would you pay to go to a live show to hear an orchestra loop the same chords until an eventual fadeout?

  • @mistakrunk LOL Thank you. As a musician, I love reading comments like this.

  • At every corner I can most certainty hear the differences between this and the original, however I can also constantly hear the original sound persisting in the background until finally, at 3:21, it wins over and comes out to show itself off. And even then it doesn't take a rest, playing up until the end of the song. All of those who truly remember the music, or have heard the OST recently, should easily recognize this.

  • To all those who think this is nothing like the original, go listen to the OST again. Throughout this piece they do everything they can for an Orchestra to sound nice while playing a song from and NES game and do a wonderful job of it.

BLUH BLUH character limit *finishes in second post*

  • I expected this to be big and loud. Why didn't they do the Metroid one like this?

  • LET DOWN no synth

  • it sounds great but, it's just not aquatic ambiance

  • LOL PERSONAL OPINIONS IN MUSIC

    dealwithit.gif

  • Wow, amazing interpretation here. It has a very different feel from the original "Aquatic Ambiance" track, but there's nothing wrong with that. It's very powerful and I'd love to have been there to hear it live!

  • What song is this supposed to be?

  • Aquatic Ambience

  • 3:32 the bad ass just finally hits him

  • Benyamin Nuss at the piano?

  • @elpianisto26 Yes, he is.

  • this needs about a hundred times more views.

  • Chapeau to David Wise!

  • I have to agree, until the 3:21 point, it's almost entirely unrecognisable. I'm all for interpretations, but I felt it misses the point of the track entirely. The pianist, though fantastic, is adding so much to the track in terms of liveliness that the calming progression is somewhat lost.

  • @edwardshallow Implying aquatic ambiance is unrecognizable.

Do you even play the games?

  • @TrainerDerek It doesn't imply that at all. And what do you mean games? Aquatic Ambience is only in one game, isn't it?

  • Its a song rarely touched upon, I've only heard it orchestrated once before. Its nice to hear something other than the Jungle Theme from DKC. Now all they need is the Brambles music.

  • beautiful... agreed that the piano was too loud at first, then I realized how utterly surreal the pianist is. Such genius should never be covered up.

  • this was so beautiful...

hamauzu, truly the master of ambience!

  • piano is way~~~ tooo loud

  • I think it's beautiful but little to do with Donkey Kong Country. You can tell this composer never plays games, just listens to how he can change a catchy tune.

  • @viewerbroadcaster Aaahm, the arranger for this piece was Masashi Hamauzu, composer for games such as Final Fantasy XIII, Unlimited SaGa, and so on. And you can hear the main melody of DKC's Aquatic Ambiance (what is the water theme) several times.

  • @viewerbroadcaster trust me, he does,

he writes Video Game Music since 1996 and he grew up witch games

  • @viewerbroadcaster So your telling me you don't hear aquatic ambiance at the begging. Sounds like YOU don't play the games.

  • @TrainerDerek I never said I didn't, I said it has little to do with Donkey Kong, not nothing at all. And clearly I can because I said 'change a catchy tune', meaning its there, but different. But in my personal opinion destroyed.

  • One of my favorites, Masashi Hamauzu, arranging one of the best ambient tracks ever? This is fantastic! Thank you for uploading. Wish they held these types of concerts near me.

  • I've been there and do not agree with all the criticism. This score is a masterpiece and was for me the best one in the first part of the concert - I don't care how close it is to the original.

  • beautifully played, got the CD Nuss plays Uematsu and love it. How can it be ordered from overseas?

  • been there <3

  • I got it already and I will go to his concerts in Dortmund and Hamburg.

I'm really looking forward to it - the album is amazing!!

  • wonderful performance. The violinist has a beautiful sound and Benyamin Nuss' playing is heartbreaking! My favourite track of the evening. Magic!! Anyone listened to "Nuss plays Uematsu"?

  • @nastywal

Not yet. But I will, definitely :)

  • This reminds me of the water level with all the junk! Awesome!

  • sorry but the frist dislike is from me . but this was a BIG LET DOWN to me .just my opinion . i felt that they didnt focus on the orgin of the music like they did with Symphonic Fantasies.

  • @dmixwell I'm pretty sure you don't have a soul. Just sayin'.

  • @dmixwell

Oh, come on. Music is about more than melody. A little reinterpretation is a good thing. To truly appreciate music, you must look beyond petty familiarities.

Why should the arranger be limited by exactly sticking to something written for a machine that had 8-sound polyphony (sound effects count) when you have a large orchestra with choir at their disposal?

Here we have a great violin performance and a great piano performance. It's be no means a "BIG LET DOWN."

    Great stuff. Bravo!

  • @dzcomposer i agree,a little reinterpretation is a good thing.it is. the music is nice . i blame the composer .they missed the mark BIG TIME with this concert . good music bad composer. (side point) if you never heard a star wars score in a live Orchestra and it has never been done before , would'nt you be a little disapointed if you heard it was being orchestrated and you listen to it and find out thatit only has familiarities andit never plays what you been hearing in the movies

  • @dmixwell

Most of the original song is there, you just have to listen for it. You expect it to sound exactly the same, which I think gets a bit boring after awhile.

And to your analogy, no, I would not be disappointed. I would feel the same as I do about this piece.

  • @dzcomposer ok cool ,we agree to disagree. peace

  • @dzcomposer I totally agree. Not all music has to have melody. Sometimes it's best to just enjoy the music for it's sound content, and the arrangement of this piece was definitely made greater by Hamauzu's tendencies towards impressionistic music.

It's very beautiful (AMAZING), and i'm glad Hamauzu took the already awesome source material and made it even more amazing by incorporating his musicality into the piece. Bravo!

  • it is great but i barely here the real aquatic ambiance in here

  • @dzcomposer

Even though I appreciate orchestrated music I don't like this piece.

But I agree with you that reinterpreting music is a good thing. And instead of doing a direct cover version there should be a lot more reinterpretations in music business.

    Cheers.

  • @dmixwell i'm with u man people go to these video game concerts for the nostalgia and this set didn't really make me think of donkey kong country

  • I was there as well! This is probably my favorite track from the whole concert!

  • I think this was the best song yesterday. I had to cry I dunno know why but it sounded kinda sad and I got goose pimples....I`ll be there next year again!

  • what the hell is amazing i love it , it made me remember and thats something speciall for me

  • I was there, it was absolutely great. Some songs really gave me watery eyes :) especially this one, how nostalgic!

  • Piano seems a bit too loud? hard to hear the gorgeous violins in the song.

  • Aquatic Ambience is one of my favourite water level themes, ever :)

  • I've been there and jeez, even though I couldn't recall this song (Was never much into Donky Kong) it was brilliant. Such a lovely piece of music - I'm really looking forward to the next concert mid' next year and for the CD of this concert. This song is so calm and peaceful, simply amazing! :)
