  • I teared just by watching this video lol

  • damn it, i messed up 3 onions before watching this

  • God I hate that kind of filming.... Gordon is hyperactive by nature and then you add retarded camera guy = big fail. You can't see shit and when they show macro shots up close, everything is so shakey, one could get seizure.... god......

  • This Dude has a sharp knife! Love it. (Now to find a sharp knife in my kitchen ...)

  • You must pretty stupid if you can't chop an onion.

  • This was quite helpful, though I wish I'd seen it before I chopped off my finger tips.

  • i bet hes an amazing cook! but he can be a fucken dick when he wants to be lolol

  • i wonder how much he charges for an onion

  • Whoaaa that looks delicious!

  • is this mirrored, or is Ramsay really left handed?

  • @EspioChaos hes left handed

  • He is left handed which makes it more difficult to cut because the most knife blades are oriented outward holding with your right hand. Unless if you buy a blade for the left hand.

  • Do you guys know that Gordon Ramsay is Chuck Norris' Chef ?

  • @BSPieMeetsSMG errrrr....ye....a...no....

    that made no sense...

  • @v10letwho How can you not know =-= , Chuck Norris' chef is always like this.

  • Oh, how sweet. He taught me how to do it and didn't drop the f bomb on me.

  • Why is he always jumping around like he's on meth?

  • Just noticed how Gordon Ramsay can be a serial killer that uses mainly knifes!

  • Onions never make me cry and I alway cut the root. Thanks for showing me what I've been doing wrong :)

  • LOL oh shit I ALWAYS cut off the root

  • Huh, it seems i was doing it wrong all these years

  • Onions don't make me cry, i just get upset very easily :(

  • As long as the knife is really sharp, it won't make you cry. The way of cutting doesn't matter.

  • @bakaanikimachisu it's the juice of the onion that makes you cry, and you cut it without the juice coming out, no matter how sharp your knife is.

  • @Verliebt The juice won't spit out to your eyes if your knife is really sharp. The problem is Western stylied knife is double-edged and relatively blunt compared to Japanese knife which is single-edged and thinner. If you use good Japanese knife, that won't make you cry.

  • @bakaanikimachisu it doesnt have to spit out in your eyes, just the smal vapors will be enough.

you can find single edged knives in the west too. that is not actually going to help that much.

the sharpness of the knife only affects how much juice come out, but no matter what, juice is still going to come out.

try a stanley knife, those are single edged, you still get juice to come out. an example of the knife ecx.images-amazon. com/images/I/21NUddJAb4L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

  • @Verliebt apparently you don't know anything about Japanese kichen knife, and the tech of cutting vegetables.

Japanese kitchen knives are single-edged and thinner- much thinner than any Western stylied knives. And when they cut onions, they 'pull' or slide knife to their side, not pushing down like typical Western cook. Japanese knife actually helps great. Of course a little bit of juice may still come out but that's too little to make you cry.

And stanley knife is NOT Japanese knife.

  • Thumbs up if you ever as a kid cut onions with your goggles on and you thought you were smart!

  • @flameout12345 ...wait, you don't wear them anymore? Oops...

  • @flameout12345 HAHAHA! I was just thinking about that!

  • I'm an Onion

  • dude i chop that fucking root off so fast. I throw onion in the air and dice it with samurai sword. falls to the earth in a thousand pieces.

  • PEOPLE JUST LISTEN TO GORDON HE IS ONE OF THE BEST COOKS EVER ... GEES

  • i lost it when he started crying..

  • WOW! i always cut off the root. so that why a cry..

  • A few reasons why we leave the roots in. One, it keeps the onion from bleeding out it's juice. Cutting an onion through the root doesn't release as much juice because you don't cut across the grain, which are the tubes that hold all the juice. Secondly, the roots keep the onion together as you slice through them. Without the root, the first few layers and the center layers will pull apart and actually make it more dangerous to slice. Although the Brunoise is the most efficient and time-saving w

  • my mom would kill me if i did that...

  • I'm confused, he says this is the root, leave that on there and then the first thing he does is cut it in two -.-

  • @Ithicuss imagine a stem, onions are like a bunch of stems together, if you cut it lengthwise, you only cut a few, but cut it across and you cut all of them.

  • @Ithicuss Well you can't accurately cut a whole onion, it would be rolling all over the place! When you cut the root in half, it starts letting out all the juices that make you cry. But since you immediately turn it over, all that juice is underneath the onion so the fumes can't get to your eyes.

    Hope that made sense, lol.

  • I love how everyone here on youtube have suddenly become onion cutting experts.

  • blah people just troll i bet half of them dont even work on kitchens

  • Cutting the root has nothing to do with why you cry. Damaging the cell walls of the onion releases sulfur compounds, which mix with the water in your eyes to make sulfuric acid. Cutting any part of the onion will cause tears. Adequate ventilation to blow the sulufur compounds away from you is the key.

  • i accidentally an onion

  • Thumbs up when you saw him cutting the onion you started crying :PP

  • @raverxbarbie

How is he a sell out for showing people how to cut up an onion, I don't think the average joe like myself either cares what type of cut it is, I just want to chop up my onions finely. I'm surprised why a "Chef" would be watching these videos anyway.

  • @raverxbarbie

    Dear raverxbarbie,

Your comment has left me confused, as I can't tell whether you are an idiot or trolling. Maybe something like "lol gordun u suck at chef" would work better for you, as you wouldn't sound so pretentious and jealous. Thanks in advance.

    Fuck you,

    oxygeninduced

  • @raverxbarbie i agree anyone who makes money is a sell out!!!.(i find that in general a sell out is used by an unsuccesful person to take a cheap shot at a much more succesful person)

  • @raverxbarbie NEW FROM MATTEL, KITCHEN BARBIE! THE BARBIE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE ORIGINAL.

  • I put the onion on ice for 5 min and it prevents the gasses from escaping so no tears

  • @jmapsupahninja we live in an age where you can buy spray on cheese and precut lettuce. no-ones got time to soak a fuckin onion on ice for 5 mins

  • That's how i always chop my onions... fuck i'm clever !

  • Why are people re-quoting the top rated comments? Do you think we're blind and don't see them?

    Gordon Ramsay is awesome btw.

  • In soviet russia, Norris Chucks you

  • I don't like chopping onions because they make me cry! But it has to be done.

  • Chuck Norris makes onions cry.

  • No question about it a sharp knife blade is safer to use than a dull one. As for onions please try my suggestion, it works for me.

  • When cutting an onion breath through your mouth and you will not cry. Try it. It works.

  • @jdh91741 That has no effect, as the gas from the root goes into your eyes.

  • Is lefty or righty?

  • chopped onion .. done

  • lefty

  • "Nice long strokes" xD

  • @neekrusher Cows are still green!

  • cry because knife not 100% sharp

  • Ha even Gordon cries, gotta get a sharp knife first if you want to cut an onion like he does

  • NICE STUFF

  • if you don't cry when chopping onion, use the diving goggle : P

  • When Chuck Norris cuts onions, the onins cry!

  • @thebahnhofband good one! XD

  • @thebahnhofband No. When Gordon Ramsay cuts onions, the onions cry.

  • @thebahnhofband

    Whats Onins?

  • i wanted to know how to chop an onion properly, this video cost me the tip of my thumb :( Oh well back to just cutting downwards, which works just fine

  • im so devilishly in love with ramsey...

  • Asshole I can do better than u , stupid chef teaching how to chop onions , gandoo suck my long dick

  • @7777777simon

    1. You are a faggot

    2. he is better at cooking than you could ever dream of

    3. you have a tiny dick

  • The horizontal cuts are unnecessary. Onions are made to chop perfectly with just the up and down cuts.

  • @jasonllapp Not if you want the onion chopped very finely. It all depends on how large the pieces you are going for are.

  • @jasonllapp yea thats what i thought..onions have those layers so the horizontal cuts are kind of pointless.

  • I know how to chop an onion without getting teary..... toughen the fuck up.....

  • Just press 8 repeatedly. This is what Gordon does to his students on Hells Kitchen

  • Gordon Ramsay is a beast thumbs up if you agree

  • If you chew gum while your chopping onions, you won't cry.

  • @AK47ASSASSIN2 if you cry before you chop onions you wont cry either.

  • @raversmiracle2 Haha, fair enough :P

  • its all in the knife action

  • I like him when he's not a dick on hell's kitchen.

  • i just breathe with my mouth and i don't cry... that and i'm used to it because i love onions :3

  • Gordon is great at this!

  • I can't believe it! I've never seen that. I wish he'd show how to get to the beginning stage so the root was left, I need a complete guide.

  • Chew gum

  • I use mixer

  • The name of the cut is "Brunoise".

  • I appreciate this.

  • You can put an ice cube in your mouth while chopping, you won't cry!

  • if your chewing bubble gum while cutting an union you wont cry.

  • Chew on gum while chopping, always works for me :)

  • in soviet russia, the onion chops us

  • @alcadm4a123 NO JUST NO

  • @darthdude1016 YES, JUST YES.

  • @alcadm4a123 You're joke sucks and has been posted by a thousand other brain dead people.

    Thumbs down.

  • @alcadm4a123 not true, onion can only cut you wide open, that's about it.

  • @alcadm4a123 i dont get it

  • @s3x0fd34Th if u dont get it, y would u want to noe?

  • @alcadm4a123 i dont want to know, did i say i wanted to?

  • I appreciate the info but can cameramen/women please stop sloshing the camera around? I see that you're trying to make the video cutting edge and trendy but it only makes me dizzy and I end up missing details. Thanks, sincerely A Paying Customer.

  • Another obvious hint. Place the onions in the fridge overnight before cutting. Try it, it works.

  • If you wear contacts lens. Wear them before you chop your onions. Works every time for me :-D

  • My grandmother taught me to breath through my mouth and not my nose to not cry and it works flawless

  • @fpvshitsonhsv It's not about your nose... its about your eyes. The onions release acid which when mixed with the liquid in your eyes forms a very weak hydrocloric acid.. and therefore you cry to get it out of your eyes.

  • @Beast9156 That maybe true but breathing through your mouth does work ,try it

  • god he (and the camera) move around so much I just want to grab him and yell "CALM DOWN"

  • @haramie - Agreed. It annoys me when tutorials use fashionably choppy camera work, when they're supposed to be helping complete novices. He waved the onion around when he was telling us where the root end is, felt like a tease. His advice is good - but I'd have liked a bit of slo-mo (just now and then) so that the eyes can get everything down. By the way, no smug remarks about idiots who haven't mastered chopping onions - if you can expertly dice an onion in 8 seconds, I'm happy for you.

  • @aerialkate Hi, I'm a pause button. I'd like to introduce myself to you. You can find me at the bottom left portion of your youtube video. I hope you'll visit me someday!

  • @rockwjz - You write well for a pause button. Well kind of. I'm familiar with the pause button - but I'd rather not have to use it. A pause button is all very well when the part of the film which you are trying to view is actually in the frame, sweetie. I wonder how familiar the director was with his film school?

  • @aerialkate Yea it was fucking disorientating.

  • Instead of cutting vertically first, go horizontally, then finish with the downward slicing, your life and hand will much appreciate it....I can't believe he cut the onion that way. And always make sure your knife is sharp.

  • A small piece of bread or a teaspoon under your tongue will prevent you from crying when chopping onions. Bread tastes better but once it goes soggy it no longer works so have to chop the onion quickly. Wash hands in cold water to remove the smell from your fingers. My top tips :D

  • if your knife is sharp enough (i mean sharpened properly on a stone) you wont cry because the juice wont spill out of the onion... its not about the root and anything... get yourself a good japanese knife and use it properly.

  • Chill or them before cutting or rinse them, preferably chill due to the water removes its essence

  • ... Does the first cut not chop straight through the root anyway? Isn't the point not to break into the root? I'm not a Ramsay hater, but I have just been trying to chop onions and puzzle this out ever since watching this video.

  • 20 people chopped their hands off after trying to sharpen their knives

  • gotta have a sharper knife.... damn

  • onions can make people very emotional

  • Comment removed

  • This is really cool! I was always taking off the root and my eyes would be stinging like a bitch after. Gordon makes everything look easier, lol

  • just put the onions in the water dumbs

  • Place the onion into a fridge before you chop it. So that the 'gases' from the onion will be emitted more slowly when you cut it = you shouldn't cry

  • Turn around, up and down motion.... Oh yeah

  • Some people cry when they chop onions, I find the trick is not to form an emotional attachment.

  • @Membersacc That is hilarious.

  • @Membersacc Best. Comment. Ever.

  • One thing I never understood on youtube...the top comments are never in the top comments.

  • Or, you could always invest in something like a Nemco Easy Onion Slicer II. It's much quicker, more efficient, and the onion still tastes the same in the end.

  • How I wish Ramsay would slice his fingers off and his cock also...

  • @TheCusterCat why?

  • How did people ever learn to cook on their own before the days of youtube :D

  • damn, this makes me feel to chop an onion! :(

  • It's insane to see chopped onion on sale at the store for $2 for 8oz worth when you can buy a whole onion for way less than that and chop it yourself in 60 seconds.

  • @sanyr80 Unfortunately, some people would rather pay more money to have easy work already done for them. Yes, they're THAT lazy!

  • i luv onions :3

  • Ramsay, learn! Nobody can cook so good and fast like you. Please stay basic and learn people like me, a men from Holland and can not eat all food here. I am living in Vietnam! HELP!!

  • My eyes start watering just watching Chef Ramsay chopping this.

  • Do professional chefs build a tolerance to the onions oils?

  • @N3xan it's phosphorus that makes you tear up

  • @shot040 So is that a no? Sorry if i seem rude, I'm just curious.

  • @N3xan I don't think so. I know I went to work at a pizza place and a guy there was dicing onions there every morning he said and he always teared up.

  • @shot040 Dang, ah well. Thanks for the info I appreciate it.

  • So many tears have been shed because I cut off the root. Damn

  • Ramsay is the Michael Jordan of the kitchen, he settles for nothing less than perfection

  • I need some better knives

  • ...Fuck, I should have looked this up yesterday ;-; I had to chop 6 onions for my giant pot of spaghetti

  • @TheDconCrew 6 fucking onions? whats wrong with you

  • I only watched this vid to see if he would cry!

  • its not a onion its a onyon

  • this is incomparable to the expert village tutorials.

  • @EpicFriend i imagine their video of choping an onion would be the cook trying to stick the onion in his ass, and still failing.

  • Who the hell dislikes Gordon Ramsay? I dont think its possible

  • THATS NOT F#CKING GORDON RAMSAY..... HE NEVER SAID F#CK, NOT EVEN F#CKING ONCE!

  • It's my dream to cook and im thinking of going to C.I.A. so im watching gordon ramsay XD

  • You know. The man takes the time to show us all how to do this. He is a master. I hope to see more and more. He brings out something in the right people. He is the master

  • Don't get me wrong I love Gordon Ramsay, but he hops around like he has shit his pants

  • SOMEONE TELL ME WHY I'M HERE :O

  • @debb0r to learn how to chop an onion.

    lol.

  • he only showed us how to chop half an onion though...

  • @Ramsez Do the same for the other half. Muppet!

  • @Ramsez you do the same to the other half of the onion.

  • my god

do you just sit here all day and post hate stuff about Ramsay every time you can?

i only came back because i needed a refresher after school :<

  • this is harder than fuckng math !

  • Guys, TheCusterCat is also known as DigbyCat, he's been doing this for over 2 years, and Gordon Ramsay hasn't been affected.
