  • 18:40 looks like it didnt fix this audio :P

  • Great video. Definitely presents FCP X in a very good light. It's certainly been bashed enough elsewhere...

  • he is relatively fat for a skateboarder, I am sure he makes funny tricks!!!

  • this might be my favorite video on youtube

  • Please visit my channel. I have a video showing a big problem i have. Thanks

  • why is finalcut pro x so limited

  • That's fucking awesome.

  • "that's fuckin' awesome"

  • Thank you for this.

  • Thank you this video! I can't understand people and not liking change....it's a part of life

  • thank you sir....thank you VERY much

  • "Does anyone feel any better about this?" >> *applause* >> "That's fuckin' awesome".. lol thank you for putting some spark back into FCPX...

  • Problem is that we have 20,000 or so reasons why the lack of backwards compatability renders it useless to us

  • ok i go and buy a mac.

  • This guy is a legend. He gives a 'real world' view of FCPX and exposes many of the misguided moaners. I've been hoping for a FCP overhaul for ages and this demonstrates how needed it was.

  • Brilliant.

  • This video seems brilliant, but for some reason There is no Sound. I have played it on various media and played it through to the end. Can you reload it or make it available with sound. Thanks

  • Actually, EDL is important for the mastering process in editing. How am I supposed to process my DPX files for 2K and 4K conform? It is still unrealistic to be cutting 4K raw codecs in the offline process - the use of proxy resolutions is important for reasonable media management. And no OMF export for ProTools? Can I create a 450+ track 7.1 surround sound mix inside of Final Cut Pro X? Oh wait, I can't - because there are no tracks! Face it, FCP X is not a pro app - its for the home consumer.

  • this is the funniest video on youtube...no other youtube clip has had me crying for so long...

  • I watched this whole thing....

and why was all the people walking by looking like that? did you have an screen that was showing them from the outside?

  • this is the best walk through ever, clearly the guy liked it, but he didn't force his opinion on you, and just showed off the features, apple should put this on their web site, cause their introductory video really doesn't stand up to this one.

  • What's the fastest format to edit in FCP X?

  • at 31:50 how do you add keyframes quickly? I couldn't find any shortcuts....

  • Best video

  • great job! thanks.

@MrGameSack ya i just changed the audio to mono in system preferences>universal access....

  • I love FCPX

  • where can i get those xtra codecs?

  • Apple should pay you. This is superb! Thanks for the great overview!

  • 2 thumbs up !!!! way up !!

  • Thank you so much, now they'll stop talking SSSSSS about FCPX

  • Hey man i see you're using PS CS5 with Lion OX, i tried but i it ran v slow on my macbook pro and the same happened with a friend of mine who just bought a new macbook pro, Is there a solution to fix phtotoshop CS5 with Lion? I switched back to Snow.

  • This was the most informative and entertaining lecture I've ever seen! Thank you!!!

  • Great coverage. I've been in so many battles trying to get people to give this a fair shot and see the programs potential. Most of my colleagues are so damn ignorant.

  • Unlike many other overviews and comments, this one seems thorough and honest. The FCP history review was also very cool. Thanks.

  • Mono sound :( !

  • the sexy woman at 0:54 <3

  • Great overview. Downloading FCPX now

  • lol audio in mono :)

  • 54:42

  • "THATS FUCKING AWSOME"

    BEST.OVERVIEW.EVER.

  • AWESOME!!!!!! I have a lot to learn but one thing I have learned from watching this video is "don't knock FCPX until you really, no really try it". I'm excited to learn of FCPXs power and ease of use. Can't wait to get started. thanks

  • Haha, Did you edit this with Final Cut X?

This audio is in mono :D

  • Apple should pay this guy to tour the world, spreading his uncommon blend of enthusiasm and rationality.

  • The best overview of FCPX I've seen, and there's no denying that what it does it does well. Love the browser for example. My main complaint is that I miss having visible architecture on the timeline. Couldn't give a damn about seeing frames on my clips, but the uniformity of the timeline's look or having to rely on a tiny audition icon evolves my timeline overview in a way I don't like. And playing with audio levels is sluggish. A few other complaints. But hey, I'm an old school an AVID man!!

  • Hm. I made my flippant comment below before watching the whole vid, and now I feel like a tool! I'll admit - I''m one of those 'resistant to change' guys. But when I watched this, then checked out my technique in FCS, I have to admit, the way I'm working, and the way I'm married to it, isn't that great.

  • Thumbs up if you watched this only because yogrant favourited this.

  • When you did the timeline of the industry, I first thought it was stupid. I learned a lot and made much more sense when you were done. Very well done. =) Hearing pros and cons throughout the video was great to see. Especially from someone that has been in the business for years and has done some big projects. I can't wait to see more videos from you. =) Oh yea! Next time, change the camera angle a little lower and block off the window. Very distracting seeing the people walking by. =/

  • Thanks for the video, but is it asking too much to center the audio instead of have it hard-panned to the right? Everyone who works with video professionally should know that is a no-no. Very distracting.

  • @MrGameSack Maybe they made it in FCP X.

  • @MrGameSack Haha, I know right. High end editing on one side and forgetting to place audio in both channels on the other.

  • Thank you for the abundance of awesome information. Even with a few or number of issues that need to be addressed by Apple, I am really starting to enjoy this FCP X! Your energy, excitement and expertise made the 54mins seem like 15mins.

  • Nice presentation. It's worth taking the time to watch the whole thing. I learned a lot.

  • When FCP 2 came out in 2001, it was no walk in the park. It had many issues, just as many as FCP X. This is a great lecture. Fantastic talk

  • Makes me feel a lot better!

  • Does anybody knows the technology/software used to display the really cool history timeline in 3d+pop up ??

That's not keynote, that's not prezi

    Thx !

  • so much negative abuse to fcpX but I guess that's normal for most things new and or different. I like the program and still running 7 gives us the chance to learn it at our pace and choose the job/version... This is a great video and a really great presentation! Well done, enjoyed it thoroughly! Thank you

  • So I guess an experienced, working editor who is at the console 5-6 days a week cutting continually under deadlines for clients, networks studios and episodic shows is actually going to stop his/her work cycle and try to figure out this application... hmmmm, red flags galore all over the place here. There are a few cool new things going on here but honestly this new version wouldn't make life easier for the majority of us... Exactly why so many people can still get the job done on an AVID.

  • Oh and HVX1000 what? haha

  • amazing

  • This was an hour of time I was hoping to be told something remotely positive about FCPX. Instead I feel like I wasted an hour and silently said to myself a couple times, "that's neat."

Sure, the auditioning is pretty awesome, some of the features are cool, and YES we all would love more simple solutions to our workflow. The problem was, and still is, it cannot be a professional application if I can not jump into ANY project that is thrown my way without hesitation.

  • In answer to the explanation of this video. Where are we? In a world of pain after Apple have pulled Final Cut Server and FCP7 Where have we come from? A place where we can't run our old FCP 7 projects on FCP X Where are we going? To Premiere Pro, see ya.

  • He didn't mention Radius Edit DV which came out before Final Cut Pro and worked on the blue and white G3.

  • When you spend 12 mins discussing "change is ineveitable" & another 5 mins belittling complaints about FCPX...you know your starting from the lowest point a salesman can start. Start at about 13 mins. so you won't have to say..."well, that's 13 mins. of my life I won't get back". Then watch the rest of the video with good information about what FCPX. Unfortunately, permanent attachment of audio to video is a BIG problem. Final opinion, FCPX is not ready for pro level use.

  • @jkmsg Right click on an audio track and it gives you the option to detach it from the video track.

  • After using the program a fair bit I have to say the more I use it the more comfortable I am with it and it can do *most* of what I require. Not being able to export sections or parts of a timeline needs to be addressed. You can't set an IN and OUT point and export just that... it exports the whole shebang. That makes life harder and is a basic omission that seems non-sensical.

  • a video about editing programs...that only has a right audio channel. Riiiiiiight

  • What is with the background here? The pedestrians walking by on the sidewalk outside is just ridiculous. Get a backdrop, man!

  • We all loved/hated our FCP7 work flow in equal measures, it's just the way we did things. When it was just FCP7 we had the notion that If we was going to learn something else it would be Avid or the AE/Premier setup, unfortunately Apple has made/forced us to learn again so quite a few are taking that chance to learn somethign else as FCPX did not live up to there expectations. I was a FCP7 user, i am now a FCPX and Motion 5 user, i love Apple products and feel at home already

  • Just watched that again, awesome work man, will you do something similar with Apple Motion 5?

  • He's selling. I never trust anyone who talks that fast and hard to try to convince me that something is wonderful. And no, that didn't really reassure me that FCPX v2 will be a pro ready app. Lots of very cool toys, but Apple has been tremendously arrogant in how they are handling this release, apparently trying to force us to like it. Until they put in lockable tracks, XML, and FCP7 import, I can't be satisfied. And no, it's not impossible to add it, and YES, they should have had it in v1.

  • Thank you so much for this ... It has changed my thinking about X. Life after death.

  • (Continued)

Personally I think they should have used the new features and relatively kept the same interface and maybe STARTED introducing the timeline changes. Just to ease the transition a little bit

  • This was a very well explained and informative presentation. The thing is I want to like Final Cut X, I really do, but you gotta remember, there are professional editors who do this for a living, as in every single day. As many great, new features there are in FCPX, they do not have the TIME to take a couple days and get the new program down pat. There's nothing wrong with change, the video world is changing ALL the time and it's a wonderful thing. But this was too much of a change.

  • Thats a very short hour

  • Wonder if this video was edited on Final Cut Pro 7, or Final Cut Pro X?

  • You forgot to pan your audio to center... just saying

  • what a joker, so why not make fcp 8 with these speeds, why instead take iMovie and use the technology to go backwards into a v1 of fcp, this is total marketing BS, greed

  • I´ve seen this guy selling knifes in a night tv show.

Please don't make me waste more time, and call me when you have a finished tool for pros.

  • Excellent presentation; I don't doubt you're cutting good stuff with X, but a good talent could make do w/ even iMovie. Think it's hard to depend on Apple long-term as they have little to lose by abandoning pro needs, unlike Avid/Adobe who do. Figured if I had to invest time in a new product anyway, it was going to be Adobe. The switch to PPCS5 was very comfortable & easy to pick up, supports all I had hoped FCP '8' would (and more), opens FCP XML files, and integrates well w/ Adobe workflow.

  • I started watching thinking I'd watch a couple of minutes and then get back to it later... I just spent the whole 54.52 glued to it. Thank you very much for doing this. Awesome.

  • The speaker here was amazing.....as for the new software, well....I see a bright new future for a whole new breed of personal coaches, trainers, engineers and specialists.....that will be needed by many... just to get past setting it up...

  • I wanted this to inspire me and persuade me that FCP X wasn't a waste of professional time. No such luck. It's pretty clear that Apple is doing what makes more sense financially: making a consumer product that will sell far more copies than a dedicated pro app. The market will shift away from FCP towards companies that want to cater to the pro user base.

  • This is spectacular. Thanks for posting the full session. Extremely helpful.

  • that was a great watch man! i'm onl y just starting to make some money in my video business and have jumped to Final Cut Pro X, as you say, everything changes, just get on board!

  • Very astute observations! I am getting into video production at a more professional level, & this was an excellent presentation - one of the best I've seen. Obviously tons of industry knowledge here!

I am severely pissed at Apple for it's arrogance also mentioned here... it immediately & adversely affects my bottom line over & over - latest issue: thanks to Apples "tunnel vision" on audio (i.e.: exclusive to Logic), my very cool DAW (Avid's ProTools 9) STILL doesn't run on Lion

    This sucks.

  • The problem with this video is you are comparing it to FCP7 which was always a bag of shit anyway. Try using a modern day Avid machine.

  • @joemediafilm i've not used Avid but we all knew that AE and Premier was a serious rival to FCP7. Despite it being a bag of shit, it has become the most used/bought editing program, so the main concern for FCP7 users was a comparison of X and 7. We all loved/hated our FCP7 work flow, it's just the way we did things. If we was going to learn something else it would be Avid or AE/Premier, Apple has made us learn again so quite a few are taking that chance to learn somethign else. I am a FCPX user

  • Excellent excellent presentation.. I feel better. We had hoped to cut our upcoming feature on FCPx.. now we will definitely be giving it a serious go..

    Thanks for this

  • fcp x sux arse, no effect support, no more cosmo, sparkles etc etc

  • Good presentation Evan.

I'd take issue with "Markers work exactly the same if not better than before". Choice of marker colour (only introduced in FCP7) has gone and sequence markers have gone. To do markers are new and useful though.

Also you were showing connected clips rather than appended clips, but I'm sure you know that!

  • I love the colour corrector, and the colour range picker, but can't find any way to feather the colour range like you could with Colour Corrector 3-Way's Limit Effect. I'm sure it's there, can anyone tell me where?

  • well worth the hour spent watching. i also like that this guy talks fast and get straight to the point of things. thanks!

  • XML XML XML XML XML!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The difference between Apple's other transitions and FCX is this - When Apple went from 68000 processors to PPC, they provided backwards compatibility. When OSX shipped, it RAN OS 9 inside it . When Apple transitioned to Intel, Rosetta let Intel processors run PPC code. When FCX shipped, Apple dropped FCP and provided NO transition, no backwards compatibility.

There are nice ideas in FCX. But his presentation basically took my list of problems and said they don't matter.

    Just like Apple did.

  • Awesome presentation. Been cuting with X and I love it

  • Well I've been cutting a 100 minute show with 60 hours of rushes on 5 different formats, with no major issues at all, certainly "bigger than a commercial" People need to use it, not just "play with it"

  • @FlyingMachinesTV - Liar.

  • @avidfcp7 I am currently cutting two major airshow documentaries on FCPX, check my YouTube site to see what I do, I stand by my comments despite your childish reply.

  • @FlyingMachinesTV - Just had a look at some of your videos. Some fucking cool shit happening there! Love those reverse pov cockpit shots! Is it for broadcast? Even if it wasn't, I'm still surprised that you have chosen to operate on FCP X. Would have thought multi cam would be quite important for you on projects like this? And also, are you the only one editing? What happens when you need to hire in other editors? No pro I know wants anything to do with it.

  • just like he said at the end, that's fucking awesome.

  • 55 minutes of good info. looks like it will work with my work flow. thanks.

  • I was excited about everything this guy was, except that after playing with it, there are serious issues with the way FCPX deals with media, and I would never never ever recommend that anyone cut anything bigger than a commercial.

It's a beta, and it will need at least 2-3 year to be anything good, and with the discontinuation of Final Cut Studio, it's too long for me and most people not to switch to something else. Frankly, Avid 6.0 & Premiere are more exciting right now.

  • This is bullshit. Where's the support for the Cinematograph, Kinetoscope or zoopraxiscope??? Unless FCPX factors support for these legacy formats its only of use for idle headed coxcombs.

  • "When was the last time you used an EDL?"

Today. Before that, the other day. Before that, last week.

EDLs are not as functional as XMLs but they are still used widely.

  • @MFXOdog DI requires it.

  • He conveniently excluded broadcast monitor monitoring on "Lacking features". This is as balanced as an informercial

  • Comment removed

  • at 30:00 he says "append to storyline", but it is actually "CONNECT to storyline". Append drops the clip to the end of the storyline.

  • Excellent balanced look at FCPX from someone who knows what they are talking about.
