One of the most beautiful songs ever written and sung by a legend. No one could ever sing this song better. Just found this gem and forgot how great it is to hear again.
I played this not too long ago for the man I am dating, at 1st he gave me a weird look, like why was I playing that kind of music. But afterwards, he was affected by it too and said, you are magical - and I replied, not me honey, Nat is the magical one!
@TrudyLookinglassFog Great Comment! I so agree. Unfortunately, dignity, grace and class died with him. My Mother just loved him, and all my family loved him. We played "Mona Lisa" at Mom's funeral last year, and like I said she just loved him. In case some of you have never heard him sing in Spanish, you're in for a treat. Please look up "Aquellos Ojos Verdes" and "Perfidia". Linda Ronstadt's version of "Perfidia" doesn't come close to his. That's not an insult to Linda.
@doktorharp Hmmm, Interesting that this performance was in 1965. Nat passed away from throat cancer on Feb 15, 1965, and was hospitalized a month before he passed. He actually recorded and released this Joe Sherman/George Weiss penned classic in 1963. If this occurred in 1965, it would likely early Jan 1965. Or sometime in late 1963 or 1964 if not 1965. Thanks for letting us know this was from an 'Evening With Nat King Cole' UK show. This is a remarkable performance of an endearing classic.
Thanks for posting this little gem. Strange it didn't make the UK charts at all when released as it's such a great composition and the arrangement is to die for. Could anyone out there identify the eight chorus singers? Can't find anything on them at all but suspect it's the Randy Van Horne singers who did a lot of session and TV way back then.
I love this man, I hope somehow that he knows. Every time I hear him I am amazed at just how much he is and has always been a part of my world. Mom put us in the playpen and turned on Nat King Cole.As such, he was my first and very favorite babysitter. One time she tried to play Steve & Edie and we freaked, Melba toast and strained prunes everywhere. She knew then that we had sophisticated tastes...Nat Cole, Billy Eckstein, Mitch Miller, and Captain Kangeroo. Yes, those were the days. PEACE
When Nat King Cole sang, he had this unique ability to make you feel as if he was singing a song just for you and no one else, and this is certainly how I feel when I hear his songs. Not only did God gift Nat with an amazing voice and talent, but Nat was a class act all the way and a true professional. He was a totally unique performer in a class by himself, and there will NEVER be another like Nat! RIP. :-(
I always associate this song with the 13-year-old girl who stole my heart on a sunny summer Sunday. She turned 60 in late May. I'd have to wait 9 years for our first date...but it was worth the wait.
Hearing Nat King Cole sing this beautiful song ALWYS brings tears to my eyes. What's so powerful about this video is all the comments. I don't know if we'll ever see a swing back to the sensitivity and beauty of lyrics and melody of his era. What was the name of the chorale? Thanks so much for the video.
I remember what I missed best of those years, it was the CHORALE SINGERS and I wanted to be one; at 4 years old, and that is the reason i like being in choir--that is what ROCK MUSIC TOOK AWAY ---I wonder if they had black voices then or not in chorales--Ray Charles had them then also, like in his song I CANT STOP LOVING YOU, etc.
This was a man that walked into a room and everything just stopped and focused on his presence. The ease at which he took command was far beyond anyone I can recall. His gentile personality and that smile blended to perfection to facilitate the transition from silent to melodically vocalizing the lyrical content of arguably the finest loves songs ever written! The poetic romanticism of this song from beginning to end is just a work of art, soothing and Masterful!
This Man is an even better singer than Sinatra or anyone of his era. If you ever see The Capitol Record building in L.A., California they call that building "The House NAT BUILT" Because of all the hit records he made for Capitol Records.
Not only was Nat a tremedous vocalist but he was an extremely talented jazz pianist. Check out that aspect of the man sometime. BTW, that's a nice bass trombone lick in this clip
I absolutely love this. I enjoy the addition of the horns that the recorded version lacks. I was born in 1958. As a child, I would play his records over and over. I remember my mother informing me of his death in Feb of 1965. I cried at the news like i had never cried for anything. Sorry to bring up something so sad here on such a joyful watch and listen.
Throughout the years (25), that I performed, must say that the most memorable celebrities that I have known: Nat "King" Cole (Nicest, Classiest, Talented and gentlest), Bobby Darin (Class, Talented, EVERYTHING from the heart), Frank Gorshin/Ella (What you saw, is what you got!!!!), and of course, Teddy Randazzo ( one of the MOST under-rated talents, EVER!!!). If only, Nat, was our President today, this would be a WONDERFUL world to live in!!!!
This man was nothing less than a trailblazer, and a class act all the way.Prior to him, there were NO postive African-American men in media.
I believe, honestly, that his mere appearance on television into White households, helped,if only a little bit,to break down the sterotypes and negative images that were prevalant in those days.
There are two words that describes this man foremost, which are, Debonair and Savior-Fare...They were wrapped around him so tightly that they permeated his flesh and made him Supernatural then as an Eight Wonder singer, supernatural now as he has moved on into spiritual essence......RIP NAT.....You will be eternally missed
A truly magnificent song and singer, such a tender romantic theme, whatever happened to this world? I am so glad I was there in 1963 when songs like this were a part of our everyday life. Thank you for posting this rare clip.
In the golden age of beautiful love songs this gentleman is a giant among giants. No one could sing like the great Nat King Cole. And what a class act too.
I love this song, I love Nat King Cole, and I love this choir/group and their harmony. It brings goosebumps to my spine and butterflies in my stomach. Awesome! They dont do em like this anymore!
My goodness! Could a popular song be more beautiful? And not only that, Nat King Cole surely WAS "the best friend a song ever had." Wonderful, magical performance by a great artist.
I was lucky enough to have been alive at the same time Nat King Cole was singing- he has a truly amazing voice, and was a classy, elegant, and much loved man. A true star, and a humble man who could move a theatre to tears by simply singing. When he died, I felt as though I had lost a member of my family. Thank you for this wonderful live broadcast of him singing!

@73MarkIV Me too...although very young. This song was recorded the year Kennedy was assassinated!!! I remember that day too...OMG so tragic for us as a nation!
What makes this version so great is the fabulous backup singers that Nat had. Wouldn't he be so proud of Natalies version.

Just discovered the clip is from a BBC show ' an Evening with Nat King Cole' - UK 1965. The Cliff Adams Singers provide the vocal chorus.
