Climbed Rainier with RMI in 2009 with only 3 months training, which was obviously not enough. Got to the top, but my legs stopped working on the way down. The time and money you'll invest getting to the top is a lot, so train well. The only reason why you didn't make it should be weather related only. The guides are on a time schedule, so your pace should match their's. More training = better experience. Also, take a ton of pictures with an easy to use camera, and snack plenty at every stop.
