hey i just started ju jitsu and i came across this. could someone tell me how its scored? and also i notice some guys here are wearing gis, would there be gi and no gi categories?

@stefano11223 Yes, gi and no gi, most tournaments give 2 points for takedowns, 4 points for mount, 4 points back mount with hooks in, 2 or 3 points for sweeps, like a sweep from guard to mount, or half guard sweep to something etc. if you put up a submission and the guy taps obviously you win, if you put up a strong submission and he fights out then you'll get an advantage point. Advantage points are used if there is a draw, or it may even go to an overtime

@D2APDESIGNS are sweeps not scored if you are in side or mounted? I did my first tournament and went for a guilitine, missed guard wound up in side, sweep him over a few seconds later but wasnt awarded points.

@dcureman123 Yeah, most tournaments don't award sweeps from mount or side control, they aren't really considered sweeps, more of power rolls is what I heard.

@TheConstruct ..... lol. Nah....... Everyone knows that Vinny is a sweep machine. Been that way since atleast purple. ... Cyborg knows this well. Everyone knows that Cyborg has that nasty knee-on-neck choke (that some folks think is a foul). ... Vinny knows this. So, in this situation - it was the perfect set-up for each of their signature moves - but Cyborg was low enough to assist stopping the momentum for Vinny's sweep - so Vinny had to abandon and play full guard.

but at the 2009 Florida state Gi Chmpionships he lost on points to a nobody from Gracie barra

He took his back and everything
