This is so awesome. I just watched "The Fighter" last night and I came here to see how much it resembles the actual fight, and it's almost exactly the same! Man, what a great story and a great movie.

@562ole Look, I'm not at all suggesting that I don't like Ward or admire him. However, the reason boxing is in the dulldrums is because guys like Mickey Ward are "Champions". Quick, name me the Welterweight "CHAMP". Sure, it's Manny Pac--or is it? Let's see, the lineal champ is Floyd, but yet Tim Bradley has a belt, as do about 5 other guys. This is no slam on Ward, but again, in order to actually "win THE championship" as it was suggested in the film, he'd have to ACTUALLY beat the best.

Winning the alphabet soup, "WBUWOIGISIIJ" championship is meaningless. Now, everyone is a fucking champion--and no one is a champion.
I'm watching the move as I type. Wow! I'm impressed the corner man has the same shirt. The commentator says the same stuff. The ref looks the same. The first knockdown happens in the same way and even the punches Ward throws look similar. Well done to those who made the movie.

@WallStwizkid UFC has boring fights just like how boxing does. Ever watch a floyd mayweather fight? They are fuckin boring. There are exciting UFC fights just like there are in boxing. To say there's no strategy to mixed martial arts? there sure is. More than there is in boxing because there's so many different ways for a MMA fighter to get knocked down or vice versa. One wrong move and it's over where as if you get knocked down in a boxing match, you still get the chance to get back up.
Now to get a bit juvenile. I remember back in school, any fight that consisted of one kid employing any type kicking, no matter how true to form, looked incredibly gay from a spectators point of view. I bet they thought it looked real badass while they were maneuvering their little round house kicks and karate like stance, but it couldn't be further. Unless you're bruce lee or one of the .01% that are actually masters of that technique, it looks incredibly gay and laughable.

Just watched the movie then the real fight and yes I will show this to my 11year old boy who also fights as well.great motivation story that anything is possible if you believe in your self.
It's amazing watching the movie and then watching this fight, the commentators are even calling Ward a "Fighter", and predicting his fighting Gatti next, to say nothing of the relationship with Dicky. Amazing movie and amazing real life story!
I don't like how the ref stopped the fight. Neary was up quick and still had a good head on his shoulders. After the 8 count he only would have needed to stay alive for 5 seconds. It would have made an exciting round 9.
That's true, but it is a bit of a tough call. Ward just knocked down Neary twice pretty quickly. If it were more like a minute left, it's no question that letting the fight go on after something like that is only letting the chance for Neary get hurt more, with 9 seconds left it's a bit more of a judgement call. Personally, I think the ref made the right one. He should call it at 9 seconds how he would call it at 60. Micky won. Just my opinion.
Thumbs up if you agree Gatti vs. Neary would've been a dynamite fight as well!!!! I think Neary had a great chin and heart, he probably just underestimated Micky Ward here.

@viggy123 I'm sorry that you came into the sport so late. There really aren't epic fights anymore. There aren't really enough huge stars anymore. Back in the days you could see some really great fights. But these days, it's like they have a belt for everything, everyone has a damn belt. And the "star" fighters tend to have every belt for their weight class. (Manny is the only one that comes to mind)
Seems odd that the announcers don't mention there is a new light welter weight champion after the fight is over. You have to wait for the ring announcer to say it. I guess they assumed the viewers already knew it. I am impressed that "The fighter" portrays this fight pretty accurately, some of the real audio is used from the broadcasters too.

The Fighter was the worst boxing film I've ever seen, absolute crap. No drama, no sympathetic characters and worst of all, Wallmart couldn't box for sh1t and who the hell was the guy they got in to play Neary? Guy was flabby and had never thrown a punch in his life. All that rock ballad sh1t to try to generate some excitement that the story couldn't deliver. That movie was an insult to the interesting true life tale.

@donnie1979hot I agree. I don't agree with the rolling around and hugging part, cause those guys really fuck each other up. However, I don't consider that a sport. That's a cage match, barely human in essence. Boxing is older historically, because UFC was illegal, fought underground, simply because it's retarded. There's no science to it. There's so many martial art styles. Glove to glove requires strategy, the footing is even, and it's not just kicking the shit out of each other like retards.

@WallStwizkid UFC has boring fights just like how boxing does. Ever watch a floyd mayweather fight? They are fuckin boring. There are exciting UFC fights just like there are in boxing. To say there's no strategy to mixed martial arts? there sure is. More than there is in boxing because there's so many different ways for a MMA fighter to get knocked down or vice versa. One wrong move and it's over where as if you get knocked down in a boxing match, you still get the chance to get back up.

Now to get a bit juvenile. I remember back in school, any fight that consisted of one kid employing any type kicking, no matter how true to form, looked incredibly gay from a spectators point of view. I bet they thought it looked real badass while they were maneuvering their little round house kicks and karate like stance, but it couldn't be further. Unless you're bruce lee or one of the .01% that are actually masters of that technique, it looks incredibly gay and laughable.

I don't like how the ref stopped the fight. Neary was up quick and still had a good head on his shoulders. After the 8 count he only would have needed to stay alive for 5 seconds. It would have made an exciting round 9.

That's true, but it is a bit of a tough call. Ward just knocked down Neary twice pretty quickly. If it were more like a minute left, it's no question that letting the fight go on after something like that is only letting the chance for Neary get hurt more, with 9 seconds left it's a bit more of a judgement call. Personally, I think the ref made the right one. He should call it at 9 seconds how he would call it at 60. Micky won. Just my opinion.

Back in the days you could see some really great fights. But these days, it's like they have a belt for everything, everyone has a damn belt. And the "star" fighters tend to have every belt for their weight class. (Manny is the only one that comes to mind)

I guess they assumed the viewers already knew it. I am impressed that "The fighter" portrays this fight pretty accurately, some of the real audio is used from the broadcasters too.

The Fighter was the worst boxing film I've ever seen, absolute crap. No drama, no sympathetic characters and worst of all, Wallmart couldn't box for sh1t and who the hell was the guy they got in to play Neary? Guy was flabby and had never thrown a punch in his life. All that rock ballad sh1t to try to generate some excitement that the story couldn't deliver. That movie was an insult to the interesting true life tale.
