In 1998 the FDA found "Lovastatin" in Red Yeast Rice. This is the same compound found in cholesterol lowering drugs. Since the FDA cant make any money off of Red Yeast Rice becuase it is classified as a "Dietary Supplement" they bann Red Yeast Rice companies from putting lovastatin in their products. Now if you want the cholesteral lowering effects you have to spend big money on FDA approved prescription drugs. Once again natrual inexpensive health care nerfed by the Federal Government!
This has not been true in the USA since 2000. That is the point that the FDA forced a change to removed the statin. Big business once again wins and Americans lose to unhealth drugs.
In the United States it is no longer legal to sell supplements of red yeast rice that contain more than trace amounts of cholesterol lowering substances. For example, the active ingredients of red rice yeast have been removed from Cholestin marketed in the United States.
