@robelinda2 Great vids. The commentator in the 1:30s is Ray Illingworth (1970-71 England captain). Tony Lewis is the Welshman commentating when Gooch is out handled ball at the end. Gooch was a great player who only really achieved his potential towards the end of his career. He said he had Terry Alderman to thank for that after he gave him a torrid time in 1989 (and 81 for that matter).
Gooch only had one poor series against the West Indies, in 1985/86 when he averaged about 26, but he still managed 4 fifties (in a particularly disastrous series). And the attack he faced in the 1980-81 series has a strong claim to being the best bowling attack in test match history. It's also interesting to think of what an average in the mid-30s then should correspond to now. Alastair Cook averages c. 49, but for my money he's only ever faced two genuinely good bowling attacks.
Goochie was a tremendous player - probably the best player of fast bowling in the 1980s. Averaging almost 60 against Holding, Roberts, Garner and Croft in 1980-81 was a really incredible performance. Some rate his 154* at Headingley on a greentop against Ambrose, Marshall, Patterson and Walsh as one of the best innings of all time. Few would disagree. Even in the 1993 Ashes series he scored over 600 runs at the age of almost 40. Amazing.
@KanhaTigerman That 154* is universally rated either the best or 2nd best innings of all time, and it damn well should be rated that highly, anyone that thinks otherwise must have only been following cricket as long as the IPL has been around.....
But, Gooch was a poor batsman against almost everyone in the 80's bar that 1980 WI tour, by the end of the 80's he was still averaging in the 30's, which was crap for his ability, but he came back strong right at the last chance in his career.
@robelinda2 All true but he averaged 45 against the WI in the 1980s and also had a tremendous series in 1991. It is interesting that the batsmen who succeeded against the WI were often not those who were considered absolutely top notch (Zaheer Abbas and Javed Miandad for eg). Allan Lamb on the other hand was never considered absolutely top drawer but got three hundreds against them in 1984. Robin Smith had a poor record against Australia but batted magnificently against WI. All down to courage?
@robelinda2 re: my last comment, Zaheer and Javed were among the best batsmen in the world but their records against the WI in tests are crap. Javed only had one good series against them in 1987-88. Zaheer never scored a hundred. There were a lot of players like that in almost every country. Javed averaged almost 60 in tests in the 1980s but his average against WI was in the 30s.
@KanhaTigerman Javed was assisted by never being given out LBW in a Test match in Pakistan.
Talking of dodgy umpiring check out the 1 st Test Pakistan v England on the 1987 3 match series, around 11 England dismissals were clearly not out and about another 5 shouldn't have been given out due to too much doubt.
@GetBackToNowhere McDermott was just a little close to being sent to hospital at that stage....almost finished his career....was found in the dressing room toilets in agony, ruptured something and was operated on, sent home from the tour...not a happy tour for Craig.....turns out he was suffering for weeks.
Top-knock by Gooch who incidentally is one of my favorite batmans of yesteryear :) However, he didn't win the battle of the mustaches, that went to Merv. Cheers Rob
@robelinda2 Nice one! Rob I have a couple of Waqar requests that you can put down on your list. 1) 5-46 vs West Indies at Iqbal Stadium 1990 and 2) 5-28 vs West Indies at Antigua Recreation Ground 1993 and 3) 5-52 vs England at Kennington Oval 1992. If you find them I'll put you down on my Will lol.
@doctorbubble Should've already uploaded the 1993 bowling, pretty sure i included it in the mega Waqar/Wasim video i did, and also separately. I'll check.
@robelinda2 I think it was Ray Illingworth actually.

It's funny how he played through all that yet Ganguly can't play through a little concussion which is somehow causing him sight problems
