I bought one of these when they first came out from John Shin's in Leigh, we were the first band in the area to have a synth, and boy we were the only band that could do Silver machine with any cred. I got a minimoog after that but I still miss the sh 1000.
You should never have made this video. It's best left discovered accidentally and then coveted. Plus you didn't coax out her full potentials bra, wg=hich is a bonus for all. Sshhhhhh...
PS Your programming is amazing. Your videos stand alone.
For its time, the SH-1000, was an amazing Synth, I even saw one being used by none other than Brian Eno in an early Roxy Music video. The filter sweep effects are great, put one through some effect pedals and just listen, Synth heaven. If it was the turkey that some people claim it is, why are we even talking about it. This was Roland's first commercial Synthesiser, 1973. I love the graphics on it too!
@sharethehouse Unfortunately, the SH-1000 was manufactured in 1973, nearly a decade prior to MIDI. What it does have is CV/gate. You could probably get it retrofitted for MIDI somewhere but that's quite costly and the experienced technicians are scarce (unless you feel comfortable with a soldering iron). Also, there are converters out there but again, they'll cost you an arm and a leg.
Hey, I watched this video many times and i was wondering. Why did Roland build the S&H and hard wire it to the VCO? because you can do more musical things with S&H to the VCF. I own a Juno-60 and I find that while it is a very great synthesizer, it really doesn't have a great deal of modulation options, (1 Triangle LFO that can be sent to the DCO, VCF and the, PWM and 1 EG that goes to the VCA, VCF, or PWM) Is this true for most Roland synths? I also own a MG-1 and I LOVE it. Great demo!
@MaxCSynthesist It was early in the design of consumer synths, and they were just making stabs in the dark, really. It's not called S&H on this synth, even... just "Random Note." The Juno 60 had a different focus than the earlier Roland synths... they were aiming for the usage that was becoming popular in music in the early 80s. Yes, the MG-1 is awesome!
i love it to max, but there is only one thing that irritate the hell out of me, it wont stay in tune, especially if you find some patch( and it has some crrrrrrraaaaazzzy patches) it wont hold it for 5 freakin minutes, aarrrggh lost some great ideas, it made me mad

great demo and obviously a fine synth! does the sample & hold function start off without any key pressed? can you modulate the white/ pink noise with the sample & hold?
@Jimfreak84 If you would have googled for 1 second you would have read this beauty is from 1973. When knowing this information take an educated guess yourself.

You're totally right Marc. Never read any review concerning this SH1000. I bought mine last month and... It's totally amazing!! Ok it's not a modular but it's probably one of the best mono synth i bought of my life (and i bought a lot believe me). Do you know if the SH5 have the same filter???
What is the name of this song in the beginning? Did you write it? and if so is there a way i can get my hands on this? if not i would be ecstatic to know who did.
also very awesome video i definitely will be looking for one of these..

I had an SH-2000 for a short time. I bought it on eBay, and while the seller's "every knob changes the sound" was true, none of them changed the sound like they were supposed to. As such, I can just tell you that the SH-1000 gives a lot more control over the creation of the sound. Plus, it looks cooler. : )
i have found one SH1000 for equal price to 100 dolars US, in excellent condition with original plastic sheet stand and original hard case. is this recomendably buy? it is very good condition. but in case of future break i do not have knowledge of enginering and repair about analog synthes. any advices? thank you
I bought one of these off ebay. Never had to break out the solder and soldering iron that many fucking times in my entire life. Intonation is still off and I have no idea how to tune the oscillator. I have to admit though the random note generator is so sick and you can get some of the craziest white/pink noise sounds as well as some UFO sounds. You can get some of the fattest leads and bass sounds too, and its surprising for just 1 oscillator. Spent endless hours playing with this thing.

Hey AG, Sweet demo, i just made a ( far less professional) demo of the SH-2000. While lots of presets are the same, the SH-1000 seems more feature-ladden than the SH-2000, except for the aftertouch maybe.
It's working great and all, i already have other offers and such so hurry up if you still want a good one. But really you don't need one at all if you still have that SH-1000. I was led to believe the SH-1000 came first, i really don't get how they could see the SH-2000 as a form of improvement.
Great review! The Roland SH-1000 was my very first analog synthesizer. I picked it up used at a musical flea market in 1988 for $50! I used it for demo recordings and jams for a few years before it was accidently knocked off its stand and busted up! I sold the pieces to a neighbor for $25. The SH-1000 was a simple and fun instrument. I wish I still had it!
an exactly clean square is impossible to make. There can not be booth edges at the same time in a squere-wave. The sh-1000 makes it very good. I´ve got one. Its the best!!
Great video. Please, could you (or somebody else) do me a favour? Could you do a similar one for a JEN SX2000. I know, it's probably not as good as the Roland SH1000 (!) BUT it has some of those sounds, glide, presets, lots of hands-on controls and POTENTIAL!!!
I have one, but I would like to be MOTIVATED by a good video of the JEN to get better results from my own one!
Is it possible to make a good video of a JEN SX2000 like this one about the Roland SH2000? That is a challenge!!!
Ideally, you want four monophonic digital voices: square, square, triangle and white noise. (and, obviously, digitally sequencing it will sound more authentic than playing live)
:::sighs::: I have bid on many a Polymoog in my analog obsessive period, but never won one. I can't afford to maintain one along with the others I have to maintain. But I will always want one. Maybe I'll get lucky.
But yeah... the Polymoog was one of the first synths I ever wanted, and I will always want one. I have a soft spot for the divide-down polyphonics.
Yes, if you're going to buy one, here is my advice: Do NOT buy one except from a reputable person who, at the very least, says it is fully functional. And then, DO NOT SHIP IT. They are big, heavy, and fragile!
HAve there ever been any issues with the synth falling out of tune?? Heres what Im saying...if I want to do a full octave step from middle C to High C, the High C is not actually a C...I have to go from mid C to B# so it sounds right. somewhere in the octave a note is missing. adjusting the pitch knoband the tune dial on the back of the machine doesnt help. Any ideas about this? I try letting the machine warm up, but still no difference. THANKS
in my haste to post this is mistakenly typed B# above...it should just be "B". it's a halt step off I guess. So if I wanted to play a mid B to high B octave, Id play Mid B to high B-flat. Its really annoying. maybe my 350 bucks was NOT well spent.
Don't give up so easily, there is a simple answer to your problem! You have a range and scale issue, which is pretty common in aging analog synths... and quite possible to fix even by the non-technical! Your SH has forgotten the range of frequencies that define an octave, is all. There should be a trimpot inside of the device which allows you to redefine that range of frequencies. See if you can find a technical manual for the SH-1000 online, and it will show your the procedure!
What a piece of shit! So many people think that because a synth is analogue it's good. Not true. Analogue is amazing but only with certain synths. This is junk but has a Roland badge, about the only good thing on it.
Why is this a piece of shit to you? It has limited functionality compared to some other synths, to be sure. However, it has a great analog tone and certainly more functionality than people give it credit for. Also, you might check out my other videos... I have had a chance to explore a couple other analog synths. ; )
Agreed. Btw, the synth itself is only 50% of the sound, the other 50% of the sound is the musician's playing skill to make the sound sound great. How does that sound? :D
Another aspect of a great synth, regardless of the amount of functionality, is how good do each of its functions sound? Some VERY powerful synths don't generate satisfying results all of the time. One of the reasons the Minimoog is so great is that everything you do with it sounds good. The SH-1000 (excepting presets, of course) generates great results a lot of the time.
If you meant to ask whether the SH-1000 provided better analog sound and analog functionality, then the answer is absolutely yes. : ) I guess you'll have to be clearer about the parameters of "better."
IS THAT WHAT THE SH-1000 SOUND LIKE?? IS TAHT WHAT IT CAN DO?? Man, I seen a couple for real cheap, but I didn;t purchase cause all the web reviews rate it real low...
That's why I made this review... 90% of web reviews are wrong about this synthesizer. It has a great deal of functionality and an analog sound not present in later single-osc analog synths.
In the America live at Central Park in Newyork City 1978 You can hear the keyboardist/Saxophone player playing one of these, I can now recognize that growler effect he used for birds chirping
what do you plug this up too cuz seriously i found this awesome instrument in my attic dusted it off and now i wanna mess around with this so bad but what the hell do i hook it up too?
That pretty much is everything it can do. Limited, pretty naff and a little bit pointless perhaps, but the synth can do a couple of good bass tone variations. Basically its nothing anywhere near a Juno but a fun little toy if you see one dirt cheap or get given it.
I would say its functionality is comparable to a Juno, except that it is monophonic and has actual VCOs resulting in it having a much more analog sound.
I found my one on the street. Someone had thrown it out when moving. So I quickly snapped it up. Great vid, I'm happy to know everything this synth does.. I must dust it off and have a go my self.. cheers.
This was my first synth! I bought it used in '78 when I was a kid. I eventually bought another just like it and sold the first. Wore the second one out and cried. Now, I got the first one back as a Christmas gift!
I remember having trouble with the pitch slipping from octive to octive. Have you experienced this? Any idea what to do about it? Great demo!
cool vid and sounds (bar presets, of course), because of this I bought one for 250 bucks (I was put off by scathing reviews on the net). Any ideas where you can pick up parts for the SH1000?, one of the organ tabs is snapped in half on mine, still works though. Just for aesthetic purposes only!
This was my first analog synt. I bought it in 1992 for 100 dollars or so. Liked it a lot then and when I see this video I actually start to miss it. Not sure if it would fit my music nowadays but at the time it was perfect.
no problem, and yeah, the nova II would be perfect for what I want. I love those tones, and the appregiator is great! lol wish i could get my hands on one
hey you seem fairly knowledgeable. do you know of any synthesizers that will get that 80's van halen synth sound, like in Jump? thanks, I mostly play guitar, so I dont know much about these :)
I can't remember which model Jump was played on, but I am relatively certain it was an Oberheim. One of the big Oberheim later polyphonics. You could probably see it in a YouTube video, actually... although I heard the model in the video may not be the actual model...
Hey Dude awesome vids, all 29 of them ! It's given me alot of insight into how analong synthesizers operate ! I'm kinda just starting out so what synth would you recommend for a 'beginner' (hate to use that word) like me?
Hmm... actually, probably a Roland SH-101 or Roland Juno 6. They have a very clear layout and are not exceedingly expensive. A Yamaha CS-01 would also be good! Thanks, and I'm glad I could help!
I remember hearing of some tweaks that could be performed on this without heavily modifying anything. Do you know of these said "tweaks"? One had something to do with placing knobs between 2 selections, the other had something to do with a small mode to the output I believe. Curious to know if you know what these here, as you seem to have a excellent grasp on synths, including this one.
I know that the Korg MonoPoly can achieve high frequencies when the LFO waveform selector is set between settings, but I knew of no "tweaks" like that when I had this SH-1000.
I bought one of these when they first came out from John Shin's in Leigh, we were the first band in the area to have a synth, and boy we were the only band that could do Silver machine with any cred. I got a minimoog after that but I still miss the sh 1000.

AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
There are actually a few on ebay now, but I guess like you say you cant afford to maintain it.
malcolmyoung86 3 years ago
Yes, if you're going to buy one, here is my advice: Do NOT buy one except from a reputable person who, at the very least, says it is fully functional. And then, DO NOT SHIP IT. They are big, heavy, and fragile!
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
Awesome synth, I have one moded with a filter input, can run anything through it does the trick a lot of the time !!! underated for sure!!
monkeycoc1 3 years ago
HAve there ever been any issues with the synth falling out of tune?? Heres what Im saying...if I want to do a full octave step from middle C to High C, the High C is not actually a C...I have to go from mid C to B# so it sounds right. somewhere in the octave a note is missing. adjusting the pitch knoband the tune dial on the back of the machine doesnt help. Any ideas about this? I try letting the machine warm up, but still no difference. THANKS
pennfarms 3 years ago
in my haste to post this is mistakenly typed B# above...it should just be "B". it's a halt step off I guess. So if I wanted to play a mid B to high B octave, Id play Mid B to high B-flat. Its really annoying. maybe my 350 bucks was NOT well spent.
pennfarms 3 years ago
Don't give up so easily, there is a simple answer to your problem! You have a range and scale issue, which is pretty common in aging analog synths... and quite possible to fix even by the non-technical! Your SH has forgotten the range of frequencies that define an octave, is all. There should be a trimpot inside of the device which allows you to redefine that range of frequencies. See if you can find a technical manual for the SH-1000 online, and it will show your the procedure!
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
Thanks for the info!
I did some googling, but didnt find a service manual i could download. you know any sites?? Im gonna keep searching. gotta get that fixed!
pennfarms 3 years ago
What a piece of shit! So many people think that because a synth is analogue it's good. Not true. Analogue is amazing but only with certain synths. This is junk but has a Roland badge, about the only good thing on it.
discothief 3 years ago
Why is this a piece of shit to you? It has limited functionality compared to some other synths, to be sure. However, it has a great analog tone and certainly more functionality than people give it credit for. Also, you might check out my other videos... I have had a chance to explore a couple other analog synths. ; )
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
Agreed. Btw, the synth itself is only 50% of the sound, the other 50% of the sound is the musician's playing skill to make the sound sound great. How does that sound? :D
haikousei 3 years ago
Another aspect of a great synth, regardless of the amount of functionality, is how good do each of its functions sound? Some VERY powerful synths don't generate satisfying results all of the time. One of the reasons the Minimoog is so great is that everything you do with it sounds good. The SH-1000 (excepting presets, of course) generates great results a lot of the time.

is this better den tha motif xs8?
mykeene 3 years ago
Yes.
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
how do you know?
mykeene 3 years ago
If you meant to ask whether the SH-1000 provided better analog sound and analog functionality, then the answer is absolutely yes. : ) I guess you'll have to be clearer about the parameters of "better."
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
I just picked one up for 350 bucks...no manual or pedal. Just the synth. Im just getting used to it. so far its damn cool.
pennfarms 3 years ago
This was my first synth. I loved it!
Random note feature was cool.
Those little switches on the front were prose to breaking of. Bad design there.
I later switched up to a MiniMoog.

i had an sh 1000, and the other kid in school has a minikorg, which always sounded WAY fatter...but i had sample & hold -
Hmmm - is there an affordable keyboard today that sounds fat like the minikorg, but has sample & hold & modifiable filters, etc like the SH?

do you have the roland jupitor 8
i want one so bad but even in this day they still cost soooo much
allyshank 3 years ago
I actually don't. I've never gotten into the early-eighties polyphonics that much! I have a JX3P, but it's no match for them.
AutomaticGainsay 3 years ago
ohhhh you have to get a little play on the jupitor 8 its brilliant the sounds are so good theres some videos on here actually
you should have a look around

Your best bet is to have eBay notify you when one is posted there!

DAAAAANNNG!!!
IS THAT WHAT THE SH-1000 SOUND LIKE?? IS TAHT WHAT IT CAN DO?? Man, I seen a couple for real cheap, but I didn;t purchase cause all the web reviews rate it real low...
Now I know
GRACEtoHOPE 3 years ago
That's why I made this review... 90% of web reviews are wrong about this synthesizer. It has a great deal of functionality and an analog sound not present in later single-osc analog synths.

In the America live at Central Park in Newyork City 1978 You can hear the keyboardist/Saxophone player playing one of these, I can now recognize that growler effect he used for birds chirping

An amp with a quarter-jack lead, just like a guitar in most cases, any brand names on your discovery?
JingleJoe 3 years ago
That pretty much is everything it can do. Limited, pretty naff and a little bit pointless perhaps, but the synth can do a couple of good bass tone variations. Basically its nothing anywhere near a Juno but a fun little toy if you see one dirt cheap or get given it.
Seguesound 3 years ago
I would say its functionality is comparable to a Juno, except that it is monophonic and has actual VCOs resulting in it having a much more analog sound.

wicked video and amazing synth... I traded my dx7 for the same keyboard....
and I'm glad I did

I have seen a lot of broken SH-1000s on eBay over the years... I would just say keep an eye out there!
AutomaticGainsay 4 years ago
This was my first analog synt. I bought it in 1992 for 100 dollars or so. Liked it a lot then and when I see this video I actually start to miss it. Not sure if it would fit my music nowadays but at the time it was perfect.
Niceness.

hey you seem fairly knowledgeable. do you know of any synthesizers that will get that 80's van halen synth sound, like in Jump? thanks, I mostly play guitar, so I dont know much about these :)
arbpotatoes 4 years ago
I can't remember which model Jump was played on, but I am relatively certain it was an Oberheim. One of the big Oberheim later polyphonics. You could probably see it in a YouTube video, actually... although I heard the model in the video may not be the actual model...

Cheers man
philsynth 4 years ago
Hmm... actually, probably a Roland SH-101 or Roland Juno 6.

Curious to know if you know what these here, as you seem to have a excellent grasp on synths, including this one.
networkofwires 5 years ago
I know that the Korg MonoPoly can achieve high frequencies when the LFO waveform selector is set between settings, but I knew of no "tweaks" like that when I had this SH-1000.
