"i guess children are more prone to philanthropy than adults... my opinion."
Philanthropy like any other aspect of personal character knows no age. Kids are by no means more open to giving up what they love than adults. Human nature is to be selfish, and giving motivated by gratitude is a learned behavior and higher value.
I wouldn't say that kids inherently are less selfish than adults. If anything, since its a battle against human nature, the opposite has to be more true, but not by a lot.
I visited Guatemala a few years ago on a mission trip. Their water is not drinkable, and there are places in the mountains and such that have no clean water... not even bottled.. HOWEVER...
Pepsi-cola somehow finds a way to ship their soda into even the remotest places. Why can they ship in soda (which is causing terrible dental problems there) but can't ship in water?
Maybe we should all put pressure on the big corporations like Pepsi to help get water to these people?
I think it is one of the most important things to do when raising your children. When it comes to "hobos", I think it is better to give them food rather than money. I one had a "hobo" turn down food and ask for money, so I think there are some out there who want the cash for purposes other than their needs.

My kids love to give away old clothes and toys... whether to each other or their cousins, or to salvation army/goodwill!

Probably the easiest and best way to demo charity.
