Soo apparenly all the people who say this amp sounds like shit must have ears that can hear past the shitty camera mic and hear the true tone of this amp. Fuckin moogs this isnt properly miced so you cant tell shit. This is a rippin metal head among other things, do your homework before you go shit talking peoples gear.
It makes me laugh that people are always complaining about the fact that ''it probably sounds like this because of the camera mic, maybe you should...''. Come on Dudes !!! Do you really expect to ear a studio quality recording on Youtube ??? Despite de imperfections of the recording, i do think it sounds pretty good !!! Thanks for the vid !
@Patsau if he can afford this setup, he can afford a dang sm57 dude. i'm sorry. plus theres plenty of good quality recordings on youtube (not including mine haha). i'm just sayin, its not impossible, and its not expensive either.
@reneugarte it does need some fine tuning. Try adding a lil bit of reverb and slight delay. Run the reverb before your delay by running both of them parallel in your loop. Set your low to 8, Mid to 2 and high to 6. Oh, and another thing; DON'T SET YOUR EFFECTS MIX TO 10. Trust me. With a mesa boogie i'm not so sure; but with MARSHALL amps; there's no need for a distortion pedal. I've never had to use a distortion pedal. I've got a good van halen/motley crue tone goin on with my marsh.
That's some below satisfactory echoes on the muted part, but it sounds ok for the rest. Next time play a sweet solo instead. I'd be fine with some lame delay if it was over an epic improvisation.
some people like the fizz, which is probably one of the main reasons they buy a cobra. i use a thd hotplate and have the master volume at 10 and the power tube distortion rounds it out a lot so it doesn't sound so harsh.
A CRANKED AS FUCK Marshall JCM 800 has the best blues/rock/metal sound EVER! Not nu metal, but the Classic Iron Maiden and early Metallica and Judas Priest. This amp is good, say for 90's to current metal, but still good.
whatever. how many people out there drivin around 80k bmw's etc and cant drive for shit? If I had the money, I would get sweet everything!! regardless of how well I could play. in fact, having great sounding gear will likely make you want to play more and get better faster as a result. dont get me wrong, I'm jealous too but why not have kickass gear if you can afford it? can you dig it, bitch? lol : )
i would attribute most of the poor sound quality to the pinhole mic that's on my point-and-shoot digital camera. it sounds much better in person and in jam situations.
yes, i'm a fan of mids now too. i have them set to 10 on both the crunch and lead channels and it's much better that way. i need to turn down the bass on the lead channel, though, otherwise it's too muddy.
yes, i've since reduced the gain to about 12 o'clock on the crunch and lead channels and i use an mxr 10-band eq in front of the preamp instead of the maxon overdrive lately. it's much more refined and clearer that way.
sorry, i meant to hit 'reply' instead of 'remove' on your last note. the sh-6 will probably sound good in a kramer, but it depends on what type of wood the body is made of. my ibanez jem is basswood and so the sh-6 adds some density to the sound without sounding harsh.
aah im not exactly sure what wood the kramer is, i know its fairly heavy im restoring a very old kramer i found you see, and i foudn out they used seymour duncans back in the 80's, on a website it says this pickup is has great raw rock distortion and great output for good harmonics
if it's heavy it might be mahogany, in which case the sh-6 will probably push the bass and mids fairly well while keeping the highs under control. if there's too much bass, though, it could get muddy although that depends more on how you're running your amp.
i'm not sure the hotplate will make much of a difference on a 36-watt amp. my framus is 100 watts and i can tell the difference in sound at low volume with the master volume cranked versus not, but it's not a tremendous difference; just a noticeable one.
yeah, pinhole mic on the digital camera doesn't make it sound as good as in person. i have an e609 but no recording gear. i guess i'll have to invest in some, hehe.
i was hoping to hear the intro. the verse and chorus are easy as poop. actually, easier than certain poops. ive definetly had poops that were harder than the verse and chorus.
the hotplate....what a waste for a 100 watt high gain head....If I want to play at low volume I'll take my crappy solid state amp and would use a distortion pedal with the volume set at 1
yes, it's because of the pinhole mic on the camera. i didn't run the sound through a quality mic. i just sat down and recorded from the digital camera.
yeah in this video it sounds like a crappy solid state amp.....check out the videos for the framus dragon (WITHOUT the hotplate) and you can get an idea....I have a cobra, and I can assure that's more brutal than the 5150...
see my later postings and it will have descriptions of my setup. i don't change them very much. just minor tweaking here and there depending on the acoustics of the room i'm playing in and at what volume.
sounds terrible. honestly, you just basically copied what every "metal" band is doing right now. high gain amp, no mids, and the same method everyone uses tubescreamers. boring.
the midrange tone on the amp by itself is very honky and nasaly, so i dial it out on the channel eq and compensate for the loss of definition by using a parametric eq to boost the 1.8-2.2 khz frequency range and then it cuts through in a band situation pretty well. i'm going for a thick crunch sound that's not too muddy on the low end and not too shrill on the high end and that cuts through a mix.
@Dreamscapevirus in the three and a half years since i posted this recording, i use an eq in front of the preamp with boosted mids, and another one in the effects loop after the preamp also with boosted mids. i vary the mid knob on the amp between 11:00 and 2:00 depending on the room and it sounds much better in person than the pinhole mic on my digital camera captured in this post.
in fact the cobra head is a lead destinated amplifier. It is not made for thrash metal or other forms of heavy music (although it can perform exceptionally well on those) but it is made for excellent solo sounds and thats what you pay for.
i only boost the crunch channel with the maxon when doing a solo. i like the crunch channel's marshally sound as is. it's great for ac/dc and a lot of other 70s/80s rock. for thick mid-rangy metal i use the maxon with the lead channel switched on the whole time. the lead channel actually drops a bunch of mid frequencies out for a more scooped sound which is not what i'm going for so i use an eq to compensate (+4db @ 1.8 khz).
thenextvh, i do hear people say a lot that the framus cobra is only good for thrash metal but i have to say that the clean tone is very warm and full relative to marshalls and mesas and you can dial down the gain on the crunch channel (not the lead channel) to get a fun blues grit sound with a single-coil pickup. running my overdrive pedal through the clean channel sounds nice and full too. overall i think it's more versatile than many people give it credit for.
dood594, i bought the cobra head for 2k over two years ago. yes it's pricey but i like that i can get a fairly wide variety of tones between the three channels and it's sound is unique relative to all the mesas and kranks that are out there.
adding anything to your setup will invariably add some amount of noise, but i don't think my g-system adds anything that i can notice very much. i use the four-cable method for the setup which has worked well for me.
The Cobra does have a harsh hi-end buzz to it... not trying to bash it but the amp's tone isn't to my liking, on this video or in person. But to each his own!
The tone sounds spot on anyway man. All you need is a lil reverb and delay added in the mix or something. And it would sound just like the recording ;)
fkn hell! High end equipement yet solid state tone, my microcube sounds better. Why do people insist on putting effects in front of boutique amps? Have you lost the plot?
dude your tones grainy as anything man let your amp breathe turn your channel volume up to about 3 o clock and master at 1-2 and 1/2 if you have a attenuator aka hotplate, powerbrake turn your master up to about 4-5 and your attenuator volume at 1-2 volume awsome either way though dude!
no way i can't do that because it sounds like the tubes are going to blow and the hotplate glows red hot and the cooling fan spins crazy. i have to keep the channel volume at around 12 noon and the power volume at 3 o'clock. any higher for either knob and it sounds bad.
also remember that i recorded it using the tiny mic on my point-and-shoot canon digital camera. i think overall the sound quality is decent for such a cheap mic. i'd be curious to see how it recorded through an sm57 or something.
i've heard of engle se amps but i've never seen one. how would you compare to the cobra?
i'd say at least 50% of your tone is in your hands, so if you're skilled and have good feel you can make a bad amp sound good. beyond that don't scoop your eq on the line 6 or it will sound like mush. make sure your mids punch through but it'll sound weird by itself. play a drum machine through your computer or something and the high frequencies of the cymbals and low frequencies of the drums (except snare) will "fill" out your tone.
thanks. i spent about nine months off and on researching metal tones after hearing the "end of heartache" album by killswitch engage. i ended up with a framus cobra, maxon overdrive, eq, noise gate, and power attenuator for a lot of my posted clips. my ibanez jem is basswood with duncan distortion pickups.
Not even close, IMO.

nice sound, that seymour duncan pikcup, the sh-19, would you reccomend it for a kramer guitar?
danophile07 3 years ago
sorry, i meant to hit 'reply' instead of 'remove' on your last note. the sh-6 will probably sound good in a kramer, but it depends on what type of wood the body is made of. my ibanez jem is basswood and so the sh-6 adds some density to the sound without sounding harsh.

no way i can't do that because it sounds like the tubes are going to blow and the hotplate glows red hot and the cooling fan spins crazy. i have to keep the channel volume at around 12 noon and the power volume at 3 o'clock. any higher for either knob and it sounds bad.

Ah dam still such a sweet amp! I was originally gonna buy that head but the ENGL SE was more of my style gotta love German amps!

also remember that i recorded it using the tiny mic on my point-and-shoot canon digital camera. i think overall the sound quality is decent for such a cheap mic. i'd be curious to see how it recorded through an sm57 or something.
i've heard of engle se amps but i've never seen one. how would you compare to the cobra?

man i wish i could afford gear like that. I'm the best player at my high scholl and im still stuck with a line 6 combo

i'd say at least 50% of your tone is in your hands, so if you're skilled and have good feel you can make a bad amp sound good. beyond that don't scoop your eq on the line 6 or it will sound like mush. make sure your mids punch through but it'll sound weird by itself. play a drum machine through your computer or something and the high frequencies of the cymbals and low frequencies of the drums (except snare) will "fill" out your tone.

you nailed the tone with precision, that is hard to do. good job.

thanks. i spent about nine months off and on researching metal tones after hearing the "end of heartache" album by killswitch engage. i ended up with a framus cobra, maxon overdrive, eq, noise gate, and power attenuator for a lot of my posted clips. my ibanez jem is basswood with duncan distortion pickups.
