You didn't see it here, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. However, I believe it is more favourable for your opponent to land on his stomach in aikido. Pinning the shoulders is not a priority. And indeed it is better to have your opponent facing away from you in a self defence situation.
I really don't think Aikido works as a sport aswell as Judo because they are seeming to rely more on strength not skill. I didn't see any equivalents of an ipon in that video.
@theshninja I agree a lot of skill is needed for a good throw like that but it was only a wazari. I was just saying that I didn't see any ipons which is when you throw your oponent so their back hits the floor flat(normally classed as both shoulder blades.) A wazari is when they land on their side.
@WittersAkita There are some high grade students, I'm myself in my second belt, I went to nationals last week. The reason they're taking down is to give the lower grades get the feeling of he competition and help them to gain confidence. But if you see two black belts going against each other, that will look more competitive and you'll see all the throwing around and stuff.
@WittersAkita Krav Maga is real combat., this is just Sport, with a set of rules that force the fighters to do an Aikido tecnic (sorry for my english, it´s not my native lenguage)
@SpiritLine Krav Maga is real combat? If I'm not mistaken, in a real combat situation, you would try to kill or at least seriously injure your opponent... How can you practice this realistically, without harming your training partners?
@theshninja I mean that Krav Maga is oriented to train a person for real combat, and they train with helmet, soft body armors and rubber knifes... so they can attack at full speed and strenght, or almost.
@SpiritLine Ah, thanks for the clarification. Do you ever fear that helmets and armor might soften the blows too much, detracting from the realism in that way?
i think in aikido tournaments there is no winning or losing, its just using ur techniques in a close to real life situation usually involved with knifes and other weapons.
Thanks a lot for posting these. It is great to see people giving it a go and struggling to bring their practice into a competitive environment such as randoori.
I am heading to Kyoto in September and this gives me a better idea of what can happen.
It is a funny thing to watch like this. Seeing it up close it is very personal and potent. It is fast and furious and requires great referees to make it all work.
The merit is that in this system no-one gets creamed as the options are limited, people get to practice full on against someone who knows what to expect, it is a sport and requires a decent level of fitness, and most important is that it is a real hoot - a good struggle and good competition.

@mooseman142 What about at 1:18? That was pretty sweet! And performed by a small female, perhaps relying on technique... hmmm?

Some of these Students have high grades and yet cannot take down a person striking with a knife? Why is this? Krav Maga is more realistic.

@PinoyBoy2829 There is winning and losing. If the strikes lands, or the other person does a technique, they will get point

I can't see this as a bit of fun in class every now and then, but it seems odd to make it competition.

I'm struggling to see the merit of this system ?
