@n1les Mine do not roam free. I know some people make diapers for them. I just carry mine around sometimes. If they are in a cage, it has to be cleaned often. Mine are mostly kept outside. I've never had any problems while holding them.
Absolutely beautiful! You don't know how many times I've watched this. Just holding a chicken is like therapy, isn't it? They truly are the best pets.
Oh my god!! I don't believe it!!! I had a cockrel and he was so nasty, would attach me and my children so I gave him away. I have hens but would never have a cock again! It amazing!
Thanks, I wonder if maybe my roosters are not so territorial (as a single one would be), because, I have so many. But, I do not recommend having so many unless you are willing to build each of them spaces of their own. I also think you can't show you are afraid of them.
Aww, what a sweetheart! My pet rooster is a big baby too, he was a rescue from the SPCA. He LOVES people. He will jump into anyone's lap and even into their cars! The pic on my profile is of him in my car after he jumped in. I didn't realise how incredibly social and sweet chickens could be.
I agree....socially, chickens are just as loving as dogs and cats. I hear of some that are mean (usually roosters) but I have never met a mean one. I believe, as with any other animal, it.s all in how you treat them.
I have 20 chickens, 17 of which are roosters. I have become a rooster rescue. I am in it because I love the birds (none of them will be food). Most of them will let me carry them, but may be hard to catch. Then there are some that I can walk right up to and pick them up. I use dog kennels as temporary homes (small ones inside their house and large ones outside) because housing so many roosters means constantly building new sections, so each can have their own territory.
Omg that is to cool! if i tryed to do that with my chickens they'd kill me!!! I'm scared of my rooster! lol But we got them when they were older and they were already untrained and i was to scared to train them lol but do you have any tips on what you did you train them? if so please mail me . I plain on getting a few chicks.
Carrying, carrying and more carrying. I have some large breed chickens that I got as chicks this spring that I am currently working with and I get bit all the time. On my face. And they draw blood. I have learned to wear long sleeves to protect my arms and I just keep on carrying. They are in cages getting moved daily.
I wonder if caging helps, considering they are totally dependent on me for food and water. I will not keep them caged forever (it is neccessary now because I have yet to build their pen), but I hope they have become tame by the time they move in.
Find a way to protect yourself and do not be afraid of them. When a bite happens I grin and bear it. I act as if it doesn't bother me. I have acquired some older roosters from others and have not had any trouble with some of them, so different personalities does make a difference. It seems the larger ones are hardest to tame.
I have never had any problems while holding him. ChickenBear does not roam in my home--he is always in a cage (with newspaper) or outside. Other people have them inside as pets, but I think all or most of them wear diapers.
When I hand raised my babies lovebirds, I realized that I could not love them so much and eat their cousins... I became vegetarian. When I saw the effort it was for my little hens to lay an egg, I became vegan. They have changed my life! Your beautiful rooster is a well-loved bird, it is so great to see a good "mamma bird"! I sing a lullaby to my birds every night as well, we all love it, them and me! They so enrich our lives, don't they? Thank you for sharing your love with us!
Roosters are very lovey birds. My rooster is a big baby too. He loves to be held and sung to. Do you put diapers on him too? They are wonderful. Your bird looks like a real sweetheart.
I have thought about diapers, but not had the guts. lol Mine go outside in a small pen on good weather days and will be moving outside once their new pen, with indoor accomodations, gets done this spring. I currently have 3 inside, in dog kennels and 12 outside, in a coop. The outside ones are tame, but not as much as the indoor ones. Only 4 are hens. I guess I am a rooster rescue! I love them so!
Hi there...thanks for checkin' out my Buff Orp's and speaking out on animals behalf. I enjoyed this video..it goes to show how much love there is in all living creatures and the need for it to be cultivated by us all. Bravo!
THAT IS THE absolute cutest video I've seen on youtube!!! You are a great mother! You love your hen don't you? I know, I've got three Golden Laced Wyondottes myself. I love them and let them in my house and visit.
Nice bird...I have a tiny little hen named Snork. I actually found it in the middle of an intersection and it was still a very docile, gentle little creature. Too bad they are so underappreciated.
He jumps and does the chicken dance at the fence for me to pick him up. When I go into the coop I pick him up and he snuggles. He clucks as if he is talking to me, too.
I have raised him like a bird since he was a chick. He has an indoor cage and an out door coop, so he has been carried back and forth daily. He loves for me to carry him and sing to him. I call him my "cheap" parrot.
Soooooo tame! I love it!

I think he feels very soft

@beautywolfy They are much softer than they look. Chickenbear has visited schools and a lot of the kids could not believe how soft he was.

Wow, that chicken is more loving than most cats I've seen.

I want to get a chicken for a house pet. Do they smell? and do they make a mess with the droppings?
n1les 2 years ago
@n1les yes they make a mess. Chickens have a cloaca not an anus and as such have no ability to stop making a mess, it just comes straight out.

OMG. Cutest Chicken video ever. I loved how he perked his head up listening to the cocketeil then shurggs it off and plops his head back down!

question: do they poop everywhere or can they be trained?
